Sandpoint Pastors Plan for Good Friday Service 1 MONTH Member of a pioneer Inland Empire family and an outstanding athlete of his day, Howard Whitman (Duke) Slater, 61, died yesterday at his home in Minneapolis. He had suffered from cancer the last several years. His death was the first among the nine children of the late Dr.

and Mrs. H. H. Slater, pioneers of Deer Park, where he was born. Slater, a fullback, was captain of Deer Park High Schools wonder football team three of its four years, 1917 through 1920.

He also was fullback and captain of the Washington State University Cougars in 1924 and received honorable mention on Walter Camps all-American team of that year. One of the first from this area to play professional football, he spent one season with the Milwaukee pro team. A prominent figure in the petroleum industry Mr. Slater served the government as an expert in that field during World War II. At the time of his death he was a manufacturers agent covering many states out of Minneapolis, where he had made his home the last 15 years.

At WSU he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Virginia Slater, at the home; five sisters, Mrs. Lucille Walton, Moscow, Idaho; Mrs. Helen Philleo and Mrs.

Mary Irvin, both Fresno, Mrs. Charlotte Fancher, Spokane, and Mrs. Marjorie Vertrees, The Dalles, and three brothers: Harold A. Slater, Spokane, and Homer and Herbert Slater, both Oakland, Calif. Funeral services will be held in Minneapolis with burial in Lincoln, where he former ly resided.

Del Phillips COEUR DALENE, Idaho -Del Phillips, 56, Post Falls, died yesterday at a local hospital He was born at Colby, and came to Post Falls two years ago from Kellogg, He was associated with Phillips Construction Co. He married Dorothy Hunt at Redwood City, in 1932. He was a board member of the Pleasantview Baptist Church. Smith SANDPOINT, Idaho Ralph Elton Smith, 84, who died Wednesday at Bonner General Hospital after a short illness, was bom in Penawawa, spent his early life in Colfax and then moved to Hayden Lake, Idaho. Crockett said John Eccles, Fairfield, Wash, a teacher at Liberty School, will speak. Jennie M. Thompkins SANDPOINT, Idaho Mrs. Jennie McLean Thompkins, 90, died today after a long illness. Born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, she was married to Jarvis H.

Thompkins, and they went to Minot, N.D., where they lived 50 years. He died in 1940. For the past 18 years she has made her home with her daugh ter, Mrs. Darold (Mildred) Sau er, in Sandpoint. Surviving beside Mrs.

Sauer are a son, Paul C. Thompkins, Spokane, three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be Monday in Minot. SANDPOINT, Idaho Clarence R. Grant, 32, Pendleton, driver, accompanied by his sister, Lavada Sleighter, 29, College Place, and his father, Frank Grant, 59, Sandpoint, were involved in a one-car accident yesterday on the Pend Oreille River bridge.

The vehicle hit black ice, went out of control for approximately 300 feet, crossed into the opposite lane of travel and hit the guard rail. Both passengers were thrown out of the car and Frank Grant suffered injuries. He was taken to Bonner General Hospital. Later yesterday, Army Sgt. Benjamin T.

Watkins, 40, and his wife, Hannah Rose, 33, of Baltimore, also traveling south on the bridge, hit black ice about a few hundred feet feet beyond the Grant accident. Their vehicle also went out of control and hit the guard rail. Mrs. Watkins was driving. Both accidents were investigated by Idaho State Patrolman Harvey Riffle.

Thomas B. McNearney COLVILLE, Wash. Services will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. for Thomas B. McNearney, 82, Colville, at the Moser Funeral Chapel.

The Rev. Jefferson Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery. Mr. McNearney died Tuesday at a local hospital.

He had been an area resident 63 years and was an early-day freighter between Republic and Kettle Falls. He was born June 14, 1881 at New Albin, Iowa.
