4 THE CANAL RECORD 371 July 20, 1910. SOCIAL LIFE OF THE ZONE. Women's Clubs and Other Evcuts. The Gatun Woman's Club held a special meeting on Friday, July 8, as a farewell to Mrs. O.

L. Brownell, charter member, who has left for her home in Janesville, Wis; The meeting was held at Mrs. BrownellV home. were 18 members present. The last the ceremony of installation, which was conducted by A.

M. Warner, district deputy supreme chancellor, assisted by John L. Reese, of Chivalric Lodge No. 475, Dubois, and Captain W. H.

Wietz, acting grand prelate of Balboa lodge, addresses were made reviewing the history of the order, its principles and the work in the Southern States. The program also included recitations and other numbers. The session closed with an informal dance, during which refreshments were served. The next meeting of Balboa lodge will be held, on Monday evening, July 25, when two candidates will be initiated. A special train will run from Gorgona, and all members in good standing are invited to attend.

Knights of Columbus. A regular meeting of Panama Council will be held at Ancon Hall, Sunday, July 24. All members, especially officers, are requested to be present, as the first degree will be conducted and important matters are to be considered. C. P.

Red Cross Finances. The financial statement for June of Lieut. -Col. John L. Phillips, treasurer, in account with Canal Zone Chapter, American National Dilemma," and "Trouble in a Turkish Harem." There was a large audience, composed of members of the post and residents of Bas Obispo.

The receipts were donated to the band fund. The performance will be repeated at the clubhouse in Porto Bello on July 20, and at Empire on July 30. Church. Work. There will be a picnic for the pupils of St.

Luke's Episcopal Sunday school and children of members of the congregation on Thursday, July 28, when the day will be spent at Naos or Culebra Island. The Rev. S. L. Morris, D.

D. of Atlanta, general secretary of the Home Mission Board of the Presbyterian Church, commonly known as the Southern Presbyterian Church, is a visitor on the Isthmus. Dr. Morris preached at the Union services in the I. C.

C. chapel, Empire, on Sunday morning, July 10. He has also addressed the Christian Leagues at Empire and Culebra. The vesper services at Camp Elliott on Sunday, July 17, were well attended. A special musical program was given by Mr.

George Kramer of Culebra, assisted by the post orchestra. Personal. Mr. Geo. A.

Greenslade, general superintendent of construction in the Central Division, sailed on the Atenas for New Orleans on July 14, for his annual leave of absence in the States. Among the passengers on the Ancon due to arrive at Cristobal on July 20 are Col. W. C. Gorgas and family, and Col.

Gustav J. Fie-beger and family. Dr. Claude Pierce, quarantine officer at Colon, returned on the United Fruit Company's steamer Santa Marta on Friday, July 15, from his annual leave of absence, which he spent in Canada. i Pacific Masonic Club Election.

At the regular meeting of the Pacific Masonic Club held on Saturday evening, July 16, the following officers were elected and installed for the ensuing term: President, Dr. D.F. Reeder; vice-president, Blackburn; second vice-president, E. J. Rail; secretary and treasurer, D.

R. Wolverton; assistant secretary and treasurer, C. D. Lillie. Knights of Pythias.

The following officers were recently elected and installed in Empire Lodge No. 2, Knights of Pythias, for the ensuing term: Chancellor commander, J. B. Anderson; vice-chancellor, R. E.

Murphy; prelate. L. C. Evans; master at arms, J. C.

Earle; master of work, A. E. Folcey; keeper of records and seals, M. P. Benninger; master of exchequer, L.

M. Lynn; master of finance, W. Ward, inner guard, C. Poultney; outer guard, J. Conway.

Balboa Lodge No. 4,. Knights of Pythias, Las Cascadas, held an open installation of officers in the lodge hall on Monday evening, July 11, when 170 representatives from several of the Canal Zone lodges were present. The following officers were installed for the ensuing six months: Chancellor commander, R. W.

Walraven; vice-chancellor, C. H. Montague; prelate, J. W. Wilkins, master of work, Wm.

R. Chambers; keeper of records and seals and master of finance, C. A. Shaw; master of exchequer, A. M.

Warner; master at arms, John L. Albrecht; inner guard, James E. Martin; outer guard, John A. Garver. Following regular meeting lor the season was held on Friday, July 1, at the home of Mrs.

C. C. Carty, when the program consisted of historic and patriotic papers. The house was decorated with the national colors. A social meeting of the club will be held at the home of the president on Friday, August 5.

The Isthmian Canal Rebekah Lodge No.l, I. O. O. Gorgona, meets the second and fourth Friday evenings in each month at 7.30 o'clock. Installation of officers will, take place on Friday evening, July 22.

All members of the order, visiting or resident in the Canal Zone; are cordially invited to be present. The Pythian Sisters, Canal Zone Temple No. 1, have received a dispensation from the Supreme Temple to hold their meetings at Las Cascadas, instead of at Empire, as hereto- fore, and the first meeting under the dispensation was held in the lodge hall on Wednesday evening, July 13. The business consisted of election of officers for the ensuing six months and. the initiation of four candidates.

The membership is fifty. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesday evenings in each month at 7. 30 o'clock. Arrangements are being made for a dance to be giyen by the Knights of Pythias at Las Cascadas in the near future. There will be a meeting of the Canal Zone Humane Society at Ancon hall on Sunday afternoon, July 21, at 2 o'clock.

All members and others interested in the of the society are cordially invited to attend. The meeting will close in time for visitors from the line stations to take the four o'clock train out of Panama, The Pacific Club, Paraiso, held an election of officers on Monday evening, July 11, when W. Bain was again chosen president. H. W.

Coutermarsh was elected secretary-treasurer. The Monday evening dances will continue for the present. The Gorgona ladies' bowling team challenged the Gatun ladies' bowling team to a match, which vas played at the Gatun clubhouse on Thursday afternoon, July 14. The teams were composed of the following: Gorgona Mrs: A. F.

Cochrane, Mrs. J. F. Phillips, Mrs. C.

Julian and Mrs. George Lowe. Gatun Mrs. M. Gamble, Mrs.

C. H. Ouran, Mrs. F. Houston, Miss Maude Carty.

The Gatiiri ladies won two games out of three. V' A dancing club has been organized among the young men in Ancon under the name of the D. T. Club. The membership is limited to 25.

Dances are to be held in Ancon Hall on the second and fourth Friday evenings in the month. The officers are: President, A. M. Colegrove; vice-president, R. A.

Yonkers; secretary and tresurer, Charles H. Bovay. Entertainment at Camp Elliott. An entertainment was held by the Camp Elliott Dramatic Club at the post gymnasium on Saturday evening, July 16, the program consisting of two original one-act comedies by Private H. H.
