Earl McDonald Heads Ad Club ORMER SALLISAW CITIZEN Poultry Will Be eature of the ebruary Trades Day ollowing a of several weeks Tn the serving of A1 Club lun cheons one of the most interesting of these events were held last Tuesday evening in the Wheeler building at tended by more than thirty of the Club members The luncheon was served by the Methodist Ladies aid A report was made to the meeting as to the Trades Day plan and the success which has crowned the efforts of the Club officers in recent months in their effort to make them more popular The sentiment was voiced on every hand that the premium list should be announced and advertised almost a month in advance and it was voted to do this County Agent red Ingram brought up the subject of the cash premiums discussed about one year ago when the Club members felt that an inten sive county wide drive would be of great benefit in encouraging stock raisers farmers and poultry raisers in planting and growing better crops and in raising better stock and poultry A committee was named at that time to ke the matter in hand with Mr Ingram leading in the work Bulletins score cards and charts were printed and publicity given But little effort was made to cover the county thoroughly and the committee did not meet throughout the crop season Mr Ingram stated at meeting that several reports were on fine in his office however and that some of the entrants expected the prizes to be awarded soon The news came as somewhat of a surprise but Club of ficials ordered the former committee to meet with Mr Ingram and make up a full report and bring back to the club at its next meeting in order that the next steps might be taken looking to the raising of funds for awarding the prizes if the results justified such President Wesley Roberts a nounced that the biennial election of officers was due to bo held at this meeting and called for nominations An effort was made to reelect all of the officers who have served the past six months but the effort failed be cause of refusal of those officers to accept the honor and the Club pro ceeded to election of new officers ol lowing a spirited contest Earle Mc Donald was chosen as president for the ensuing six months period A Peters was named vice president Ray 0 Weems secretary and Oscar Capps' treasurer The president under the by laws is empowered to name the Executive Committee The Club listened with close interest and much pleasure to a short address by Rev A Arnfield pastor of the Presbyterian church ho recently moved here from Trenton Mo ami who was active eivi talk to the utmost MORE Bl: Si NESS CHANGES IN THE PAST WEEK DIES IN CALIORNIA George Manker a former citizen of Sallisaw died at Culver City Califor nia on December 24 following an ill ness of two weeks The immediate cause of Mr death was septic poisoning resulting froih the pulling of an ulcerated tooth on De cember 11th at his home He was an owner of a large shoe hospital in Cul ver City and prominently identified in business there While a resident of Sallisaw Mr Manker was the owner of a shoe shop here After leaving Salli saw he went to California This was about eight years ago uneral services were held Christ mas day and interment was made in the Santa Monica California ceme tery OLD TIME VIAN RESIDENT DIES News reached Sallisaw on riday of last week of the death at Vian of Reed familiarly known as Reed to his friends and ac quaintances The deceased had lived in Vian for a long time and was seventy six years of age at the time of death He was a brother of 0 Reed who formerly lived in this county but who now resides in Mus kogee and uncle of Walter Reed well known Vian citizen with whom he made his home in recent years The news came as a distinct shock to his many Sallisaw acquaintances uneral services were held at the irst Christian Church in Vian on Saturday January 3rd and in charge of Reverend Howard Interment was made in the City cemetery in this city on the same afternoon During his lifetime he was a devoted mem ber of the Christian church and took an active part in all civic affairs un til in more recent years A LESSLEY uneral services of A Lessley a pioneer citizen of Sequoyah county were held on December 26th inter ment being made in the cemetery a plot near his old home Rev A Peters a Baptist minister and a life long friend of the deceased officiated at the grave Mr Lessley was born in Missouri June 1st 1845 and at the age of 34 moved to the Cherokee Nation where he lived until his death He married Miss annie Lyman in 1S79 and there was bom to them four boys and four girls all of whom are living at the present time He has one son Jim Lessley of Paw community by his first wife who died while residing in Missouri The deceased is survived by tinguished Southern general His fun eral services were largely attended by his numerous friends throughout ti county Several additional business changes have been noted the past week start ing the new year off Boydston retiring county as sessor has purchased the Walter Goodwin confectionery a cafe across from the telephone office and has assumed charge Mr Goodwin is considering the purchase soon of an other line of business in which he is experienced and will remain a resident of this city Chas A Burriss of Springdale Ark has moved into the Mabray building adjoining and opened a coffee roasting shop He has moved his roasters and machinery here and has opened for business Dowell who has conducted a thriving cash grocery business in air view addition for the past year moved into the erguson corner building on Monday He found it necessary to se cure larger quarters and concluded to move nearer the business center The business will be conducted upon the same plan and basis as heretofore The rumor was current on the street Tuesday that Spriggs was on a deal to purchase the White May Cafe on Cherokee avenue now owned by Perry Griffith but the rumors couldnot be verified Construction work started early in the week upon the new Kobel rilling station at the corner of Wheeler and Cherokee avenues The new station is bing built by Raleigh Kobel and will be one of the most modern Childers of Moffett and a river bottom farmer who died Wed nesday morning at his home was taken to Gans for burial Wednesday Mr Childers was injured several weeks ago when struck by an automobile driven by Dan a former cot ton buyer of this city His leg was broken in two places and he also suf fered internal injuries it is said He is survived three sons Clyde Childers Clarence Childers and Orval Childers all of Gans and one brother Childers of Moffett and a half brother Mitchell of Moffett and one sister Mrs Maggie Garrard of McKey Mr Childers and his connections have owned gome of the most valu able river bottom land in the county it is said they still have considerable acreage near Moffett PIONEER MAPLE CITIZEN DEAD Newman of Maple Oklahoma died last Monday morning about 11:00 from a serious illness of tu berculosis from which he had suffered for many months Word reached this city a few hours afterward The de ceased was a brother in law of A Taylor chairman of the board of county commissioners He was 50 years of age at the time of death and had lived in this section of the country for a great many years and was known to a great number of peo ple He engaged in farming during his lifetime and at the time of death was farming about three miles west of Maple The funeral services were conducted from the home by Reverend Rhodes of the Akins Baptist church and the deceased was laid to rest in the Maple cemetery COUNTY RECEIVES ALMOST $10000 IN AUTO TAX Sallisaw Odd ellows held their an nual installation meeting in the ra ternity building Tuesday night Newiy elected officers were installed and the program was discussed by var ious members The meeting was largely attended The Odd ellows have been making rapid progress during the past year and the newly elected officers have set their peg higher than the officers did during the past year and accord ing to the splendid enthusiasm shown during the installation exercises the present year will be a OUT BUSINESS Sequoyah County Abstract company a pioneer business organization of Sallisaw went out of business the first of the year The abstract company has been under the management of Anderson for several years and earlier in the fall Mr Anderson was elected to a three year term as divi sional chairman of the telegraph operators of Missouri Pacific line This additional duty required more time and Mr Anderson surrendered his fease to Mrs oreman own er of Sallisaw Abstract company The Sequoyah County Abstract company was one of the leading abstract con cerns in eastern Oklahoma through the splendid management of Mr Anderson It is said Mrs oreman will take over the present business of the Sequoyah Abstract company With this company out of business tills leaves Sallisaw with only two abstract firms the Cherokee Title company with red Campbell and Burrow in charge and Sallisaw Abstract company with Mrs oreman in charge BADGER LEE Sequoyah county received $940417 as its apportionment for auto tax dur ing the year of 1924 according to the figures given out by the state high way commission at Oklahoma City this week This county received $7 81373 from this fund during the year of 1923 During 1924 the total number of in tar vehicles registered as 7710 and the total amount collected was 692 sub93 showing end average of si 092 prr vehicle An efficitn thod of rating motor vehicles has netted to the road fi ids an average of 74 cents per vehicle and on the total registration of 337740 'Vehicles it has netted a sum of $24696760 which under the old method was being officials began at an early hour Mnoday morning to take oaths of office Most of the new of ficials were sworn in by County Judge William Rogers who retires next Monday The first one to appear with his bond and certificate of election and ready for the oath was red Spear county clerk who succeeded Henry Burrow He was also ready with a list of his deputies including William Howell and Claude McDonald County Judge Rogers gave the oath to Gay sheriff Harry Pitch ford county attorney and Raymond Drake court clerk while the new county clerk administered the neces sary oath to John Bell Welch county assessor Raymond Drake court clerk suc ceeded Oscar Noble who served two terms as court clerk and made a splendid record as an official Harry Pitchford county attorney suc ceeded himself and the county attor ney is beginning a four year term but is being boomed by his many warm friends over the judicial district as an aspirant for the district place John Boll Welch a popular young fellow from Badger Lee who defeated Boydston for the democratic nomination for county assessor in the August primaries is in office for two 1 years John Bell will make a splendid ff icial red Spear a rural school Lucille Page Richard Hartley teacher who won a three cornered Rachel Howard Sofa Howard Jesse battle in the primary succeeded Henry and Cora Rape Burrow who was appointed county clerk by the commissioner to fill a AKINS vacancy One of our former school boys Mr Calvin Masterson who moved to Hominy Oklahoma before Christmas is back for a visit We would be glad if he could stay with us and to Salli i saw and entered the newspaper field by joining the Democrat force He proved to be a splendid news gatherer and soon was placed at the head of the county news department but two months he left the newspaper field and is now associated with thej Johnson Credit company of this city The lure of printers ink will no doubt re capture as one of these days Mr and Mrs Carr have the con
