6 Medina County Gaxette Medina. 0., Aug. 29, '67 Blue Devils Are Big, Young, Expecting Good Season BY CHARLEY AUKERMAN The Brunswick sophomores didn't get much space in the newspapers last year, but it's certain they will this season as juniors. A good sophomore reserve crop came out for football last season, but found themselves overshadowed by the upper classmen on their own team, as the Blue Devils, under first year coach John Armstrong, rolled to a 7 2 season. The sophs, unlike the sophomore class at Cloverleaf that received lot of attention during the year, didn't see much varsity action.

They will this year. bert Blachly and James Mat zek, assistants last season, are gone. VARSITY SCHEDULE Sept 9 at Padua Sept. 15 Our Lady of Lourdes Sept. 22 at Solon Sept.

Also gone are AU Countians Tom Warhol i and Jim Hayas, and second teamerg Joe Pope end Denny Riggs, a junior who transferred out of the district It's going to be hard replacing Moore, who was the fourth leading scorer in the county last year with 48 points. But, the Blue Devils have set of experienced ends in Jim Zwifel, Bill Horvath, Dale Conley and Jim Mooney, and a solid quarterback, Jim Montali, to begin with.

'I thought pretty highly of our sophomores last year, too," Coach John Armstrong says. "We're pretty big, this year, and most of these kids are only juniors, too. The ball club is really Montali, Horvath and returning fullback Jim Chmielowiec are the Brunswick keys this year. "We have no experienced running backs, except Jim, and we've lost experienced linemen," Armstrong says. "We'll be bigger, but less experienced" The Blue Devils lost their interior linemen through graduation, but the line that will be put forth to make the holes for the Devil ballcarriers will be session as the Brunswick Blue Devils go through the paces prior to opening session against Padua Sept.

Centers will be Bucky Schuster, 8 2, 196, or Gary Manning, 6 2, 230, while guard candidates are Tim Tec tor 6 2, 218, Paul Sammont end Mike Henry. At one tackle will be six foot, 211 Art Thuener. "We're bigger than we were last year," Armstrong says.

"Defensively, we're between 197 and 230. Our defensive backs are definitely stronger. "This team has a tremendous attitude. We're looking for good season, despite a tougher schedule." The Blue Devils went to a 10 game schedule this year, dropping Willard and (Jevel ay nd John Hay, and adding Padua and Solon. Padua dropped Cin cinnati Roger Bacon to play Brunswick this year.

The Devils added North Ridgeville for the final game. "It's going to be hard to improve on a 7 2 record. What we can do is hard to tell yet, without the head coach says. The first scrimmage, with Olmsted Palls, was held Saturday. The Chippewa Conferen race will be tough, Armstrong feels.

His Blue Devils accom plished the feat of nipping Orr ville last season, the first time in conference history that was done, but conference champ Wadsworth physically mauled the Devils and Cloverleaf came back the following week to shut out the Blue and White, who finished third in the league. One goal the Blue Devils have not yet attained is beating Cloverleaf. Not in the history of the rivalry between the two schools has Brunswick been able to stop the Colts. "Wadsworth is still the team to beat in the conference," Armstrong says. "Both of the other teams will ba improved over last year." The Blue Devil coaching staff has changed slightly from last year.

Green Bay Tops Cowboys, 20 3 DALLAS (UPD Green Bay faced the second largest crowd in Cotton Bowl history and a Dallas Cowboy club bent on revenge for last season's Joss to the Packers in the National Football League title game. But it was cake to the world champions. The Packers, playing almost the whole game without first string quarterback Bart Starr, methodically nibbled away at the Dallas defense Monday night and scored an easy 20 3 exhibition win.

Zeke Bratkowski stepped in for Green Bay midway through the first period, and the Packers did not miss Starr a bit. The substitute quarterback hit on 11 of 18 passes for 137 yards and set up all of the Packers scoring. That came on one and two yard plunges by Jim Grabowski and Elijah Pitts, and Don Chandler field goals of 27 and 42 yards. Dallas' lone points came on a 31 yard field goal by Harold Deters in the second period after field goal attempts of 44 and 25 yards by Mac Percival sailed wide in the first period. Bratkowski came in after Starr aggravated a bruised rib he had received earlier in the exhibition season.

The injury was a minor one, but Packer Coach Vince Lombardi held his ace pass tosser out of the contest. Eight Medina Horses Run Tonight At Northfield The luck of the draw, which The Feed Box choices include: plays a big part in harubs 1. Slanty Sam; 2. Hi Awanda; 3. v.

Namath Charged With Assault NEW YORK (UPI Quarterback Joe Namath. the New York Jets' $400,000 problem child, is in trouble again this time for allegedly assaulting a sports editor.

Papers were filed in New York State Supreme Court Monday charging the pro football star and two other men with assaulting Charles Parmi ter, sports edior of Time Magazine, in an East Side night spot. According to the papers filed in court, the assault took place Aug. 4, shortly after 3 a.m. in the Open End bar. Parmiter, represented by atfirney Stuart M.

Speiser of New York, is seeking to learn identity of the two other men who allegedly were present. The applications returnable Sept. 7 in Special Term Part I directs Murray Schaaf, owner of the night spot, to reveal in court the names of the two companions. Parimeter's attorney said it was important that the two men be identified so they can be included as defendarttswith Namath and Schaaf in the court action. The affidavit charged "without any warning or provocation," Namath grabbed Parmiter by the lapels, slammed his head back over the top of a cigarette machine and held him there for approximately the next 10 or 15 minutes.

During that time Parmiter charged that Namath and another man whom Joe called "Mickey" joined in striking him in the face. "Mickey" was reported to be a professional boxer. It also has been charged the second unidentified man hovered around the alleged attackers and prevented other persons in the bar from interceding. OWLING horse racing, didn't deal kindly; with eight Medina area entries on tonight's Northfield Park card. Of the eight trotters or pacers carrying the county hopes tonight, four start from the extreme outside of the field, one starts from seventh post in an eight horse field, one from the fifth spot, and one from fourth.

Only two came out smiling. One was Mac Poston's Avalon Flora who drew the rail in the ninth race, and the other is Al Kiesel's trotter Slanty Sam, who drew No. 2 position in the first race. Others, by race and post posi tion, are: second, Ralph Scott's Town Line, No. third, Tom Haight's True Lou, No.

fourth, Jim Perrys Keystoner Miss, No. sixth, Dick Hawley's Calumet Lil, No. eighth, El bridge Moxley's All Time, No. 7 in a seven horse field; ninth, Avalon Flora, No. 1, and Bob Cole's Miss Scotbed, No.

5. Trackmen made Slanty Sam a favorite, and give Town Line strong backing. All Time, off recent performances, has to be a choice despite the unfavorable post, and Avalon Flora will be a strong choice. Sam, who went 21 times without a win last year, will be after his fourth this season, and third in his last five outings. The 14 year old Town Line, near ing the end of his racing career, has one win, a second and four thirds.

All Time has two wins, in 13 starts, and has a 2:04 2 mark this year. Avalon Flora has yet to win at Northfield, but has headed the field six times in eight starts at county fairs and recently passed ber qualifying test in a breezing 2:10.
