LANCASTER NEW ERA 6 THURSDAY, JULY 23, 1992 V) Wprirpnd Duckie Race offers top-stakes contest, music, more by Jane Holahan New Era Staff Writer Once inside the park, visitors will have plenty to do, including playing games, getting their faces painted, snmoozing with all the ducks and eating food. (No, Peking Duck is not on the menu!) Musical entertainment will include the Keystone Kopps, Another Day, the Sound Dogs, and Smokin Section. They day winds down to the announcement of the winners at about 4 p.m. Jess notes that the most popular event, besides the bigrace, may well be the dunking tank, which is being manned this year by the Fraternal Order of Police. This fact may be of particular interest to anyone who recently got a ticket they think they didnt deserve.

But it is the ducks who will be the center of attention. Four-thousand inflatable ducks paddling down the river is a sight to see just consider it the worlds largest bathtub. all those ducks floating down the river. Just how big a sight? Well, last year, more than 4,000 ducks participated in the race. Thats a lot of Each one belongs to the person who adopts him you even get adoption papers and the grand prize winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Las Vegas.

Second prize isnt bad either its a $1,000 shopping spree at the Bon Ton. There are 50 prizes in all. Rubber duckie races have been growing in popularity dramatically across the country, notes Jess. Ducks are a lot of fun. The Duck Festival will begin at noon.

The entrance to the park at Chesapeake and Strawberry streets, will feature a gigantic rubber duckie. You wont be able to miss him, Jess says with a laugh. HES BEEN in training all his life swimming laps back and forth, devoting himself to training, practically living in the water while looking for someone to sponsor him in his quest for greatness. Since the Olympic committee still hasnt seen fit to allow his kind to participate, he wont be able to show off his stuff at Barcelona. That leaves the mighty Conestoga River.

OK, this athlete is a duck a rubber duck OK, OK, a plastic duck and those laps have been in a bathtub, but you can still sponsor him in his quest for greatness. And benefit the Easter Seal Society of Lancaster County in the process. The fourth annual Great Conestoga River Watershed Rubber Duckie Race is being held Sunday at Lancaster County Central Park and thousands of duckies are planning to participate in the festivities, which also will include music and other entertainment. Heres how things work. For $5 you can sponsor a duck, who will plop into the Conestoga at about 3 p.m.

and float down the river in hopes of becoming the first fowl to cross the finish line. The race will take about an hour, depending on the weather and the wind, says Bonnie Jess, director of marketing for the Easter Seal Society of Lancaster County.
