Page Ten Tho Portsmouth Herald, Portsmouth, N. H. Friday Evening, June 17, 1949 Erskine Johnson In Hollywood CARNIVAL HOLLYWOOD (NBA)--Jim Backus, the off-beat comic, is back -with us today with an ofl-beat viewpoint on Hollywood historical and gangster films. Backus just can't understand how the kids can grow up unscathed by them. He says he didn't.

"I was always on the wrong side. In Revolutionary war pictures the British always were the better dressed and better actors. I was on their side. Washington always looked to me like a second-rate ham in a toupee. "I was always on the side of the Romans because the Christians got such awful actors.

In Civil war films, they always hired a fine actor from the Theater guild to play General Lee. General Grant was some guy they found in a drug store." What brought on all this is Jim's role of a policeman in "The Bail Bond Story." Jim is always on the wrong side of the law in gangster films, too. As he explains it: "The gangsters arc the best actors--the fellows you remember." Wailed Jim: "I'm a policeman. I've got one suit, a broken-down apartment and no girl friends. The gangster, George Raft, has three carloads of suits, a penthouse and 40 dolls.

Do you blame me for wanting to be a gangster instead of a cop?" HOLLYWOOD FINALLY is putting a "human" Protc.slnnt minister on the screen. Joel McCrea plnys the parson in M-G-M'K "Stun; in My Crown," a post-Civil war story. Predicts Joel: "It's the Protestant 'Going My Way' with the nostalgic qualities of the best of Charley Ray's old films." Those headlines from Cannes have put box-office wallop back into Hita Haywcrth's old films. Six have been reissued since the marriage and most theater marquees are spelling it out as "Princess Aly Khan." Sequel to "Mrs. Miniver" is back on M-G-M's production slate.

Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon will go to England for the film, a postwar story of the Minivers. Deanna Durbin's name is missing from her long-time dressing room at UI. Her contract expires in August and then she'll head for a comeback via a Broadway musical. There's a one-film-a-year deal cooking at Columbia for Joan Leslie, who has been off the screen too long. Judy Canova is looking tor a radio sponsor.

Hugh Herbert are all working for Harry Conover as Conover television girls. Movie talent scouts are shadowing Bill Harrington, the singer who replaced Frank Sinatra on the Hit Parade. Love scenes between Peggy Cummins and John Dall in "Gun Crazy" are going to their hearts, which is unusual. Hollywood love scenes here usually go to people's heads. Herbert Stein relays the story about Eve Arden being made honorary commodore of a local yacht club.

They handed her a commodore's flag and Eve cracked: "Gosh, I feel like a new nation." News item: "Nine to of all candy sold in the United States is distributed through theaters." The kid behind me last night had of it." Reverse twist: A client of Sy Fischer, the agent, heard that Fox was casting veterans of the Eighth air force for bit roles in "12 O'clock High." "How about my agent? He's a. vet," the fellow said to the casting office. "Send him out," said the casting office. Result: Agent Fischer is playing the bit role of a gunner on Gregory Peck's bomber and the client is threatening to collect 32 Graduated By York High York high school's commencement exercises were held yesterday on the village green between the First Parish church and the town hall for 32 students.
