SfOKAXE DAILY CHKOXICLE TMM STARTS T-O-D-A-Y New Shows Today 1 Next to the last of the 1949 season of summer music school band concerts will be presented at 7:30 tonight in Lincoln park. The concert will be played by the 150-piece advanced band, with players representing nearly every school in the city. Directors will be K. Harris and Harold N.

Anderson of the i summer music school staff. Wallace Brazeal will act as master of ceremonies, and Leona Breakey, soprano, will be featured soloist. This is the sixth year the series of park concerts, sponsored jointly by the Spokane Lions club, the city (park board hnd the public schools, has been presented. Miss Scott, as usual, resorts to the puckered lips expression as though she had a mouthful of southern accent, which, disappointingly never materializes.

Best part is played by Don De-Fore. who saunters into the plot and finally traps the unscrupulous Miss Scott in a gorgeous suite of rooms in a Mexican hotel. Companion feature is an outdoor western. "Indian Agent, starring Tim Holt. B.

"4 ST Carol Joanne Babbitt, 18-year-old violinist, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Waldo E. Babbitt, N2504 Atlantic, was declared winner of the local talent youth opportunity contest in the Horace Hc-idt show at the Fox last night. Miss Babbitt will appear as guest soloist on the i broadcast Sunday from Salt Lake City.

The program will be heard here through KHQ at 7:30 p. m. A graduate of North Central high school, she is employed at the Washington Water Tower company. Other local contestants were Lois J. Thomas.

Greenacres, flutist: Beverlv Ann Sanford, novelly vocalist: William Bud Walter, I clarinet player: Rocky Star, who plays the guitar and sings western ra'lads. and a piano-duo, Beverly Johns and John Madden. The Heidt show, with between 50 and 60 artists, was sponsored here by the Spokane Lions club, and plaved to parked houses for, both the 6:30 and 9:30 performances. Heidt. a veteran showman, sparked the show as master of reremonies and was assisted by hi' beautiful blond wife in song and dance routines.

Audience Enjoyed It There is no doubt the audience, enjoyed it. It was a different type of program, mostly on the light side, and was an excellent displav of young talent gathered from all parts of the United Slates. Slickest comedy performanre was given by Vahan Khorician. from Boston. As a in the audience selling programs.

Khorigian went to 1he stage to bring down the house. He, could "mug" his way to success in any night spot. One of the top performers was 360-pound Ralph Sigwald, the "Ca-1 ruso of the South." Sigwald was, a high school janitor in Charles- ton. S. when discovered by i Heidt.

He has a rich, powerful voice and with training seems assured of a fine career. Two blind artists were on the program, Harold Parr, Nebraska farm boy, with a splendid baritone voice; and Pierce Knox, from Oakland, who gave a sensational performance with the xylophone. Other featured entertainers included a sultrv brunette contralto, Melissa Smith: Vic Valente, who presided at the piano and led the Heidt orchestra: the Ewing sisters, a clever dance team: Russ Budd, tap dancer; Halyard Patterson, Negro pianist, and Sonny Berry, a talented soft-shoe dancer. A show-stealer was 4-year-old Ernie Camerota, a tiny song stylist accompanied by his mother playing the accordion and his father with the guitar. General chairman of the show, which played to nearly 5000 persons for the two performances, as Harvey Guertin.
