12 June 2, 1948. MOVIE FEATURES LOVE, CONFLICT of love and conflict of political ideologies, Daughter," now at Post, is a faithful. but not too interesting, reproduction of the novel by J. P. Marquand.

That's because the book itself too interesting. the daughter of a millionBarbare. Stanwyck has the role of aire, Charles Coburn, who is constantly frustrated because people won't let her run the works. The two 1 men in her life are Richard who role of a seriousminded, but poor, young aristocrat. I Van stubborn Hemlin, economist as an whom also poor she and marries.

It's a drama of social conflict, temperamental clashes and emotional fireworks, but unfortunately none of it is handled very ingly. Miss Stanwyck throughout the picture continues to be just Miss Stanwyck; Richard Hart, normally a very fine actor, never comes to life, and Van Heflin is just a stuffy. stodgy individual who has none of the appeal needed to win a beautiful daughter of the rich. Keenan Wynn and Spring Byington head the supporting, cast. Companion "Campus Sleuth." -B.

It is called "Brief Encounter," and it is an expanded cinematic version of a one-act play, "Still Life." which Noel Coward wrote a decade or so ago. This picture can not he measured by any Hollywood yardstick. Its theme is love affair with overtones of tragedy.

But the lovers are provincial couple, each nearing 40. And because each is married and a parent, they resolve to see one another no more and they do just that. So love does not conquer all, and the lives of others are not torn out of their normal channels of affection. On that note quiet, tender heroism, "Brief Encounter" ends, its entire length unmarred by a single false touch. Much of the action transpires in the waiting room of an English railroad station.

There the lovers first motif met; accentuates there they, part. thorain their hopeless love. Weaving this theme into the climax, the heroine- -aftr parting for the last time from her loverdashes on to the platform to throw herself beneath the wheels of an on-rushing express. She stops at the platform's edge, her face broken in lines of grief and horror in the dim murk of the platform. Actress "Looks" 38 Playing the lovers are Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard.

Miss Johnson looks like a of 38, not a lacquered beauty Hollywood production mill. Shens portraying a housewife of limited means, and her wardrobe is what such a woman's would be about three dresses and two pairs of shoes. Miss Johnson's performance outshines Howard's--and by about as wide a margin his outstrips most portrayals by Hollywood males. The word "memorable" is often used loosely. It may be used in its exact sense in describing "Brief B.

H. ACTRESS SPARKLES IN REVIEW ROLE Mrs. Montgomery Smith, who gave an outstanding performance in Spokane Civic theater's "State of tit Union" last fall, revealed additional talents last night when she entertained members of the group with a series of Gertrude Lawrence reviews. The program followed a business meeting held at the Theater playhouse, S652 Denver. Of particular excellence was Mrs.

Smith's interpretation of Miss Lawrence's autobiography, "A Star Danced." Two others splendidly done were from Coward's: "Private "Susan and Noels God." by Rachel Crowthers. Mrs. Smith has a distinct flair for comedy and made the most of the satirical bit from "Private Lives." Carl V. Goettel, a Spokane delegate to the recent 39th annual convention of Rotary International at Rio de Janeiro, is now touring major South American capitals. He wrote from Montevideo, Uruguay and expects to visit Santiago, Chile and Beunos Aires, Argentina. Recalling plans to build a stadium in Spokane, Goettal wrote that he had seen "wonderful municipal stadiums in Rio de Janeiro, Santos (Brazil) and particularly at Sao Paulo Goettal noted that such American companies as General Motors, Ford, Studebaker and General Electric have big factories in 1 Brazil. "The only restriction in Brazil to American industry is the requirement that two Brazilians be employed to American," he said.

The convention was the first in which North Americans were in the minority, Goettal wrote. There were 5700 South Americans at the convention, compared to only 1500 from all other countries. Goettal was one of the convention speakers. New Busses Added The Hillyard-Monroe route of the Spokane City Lines carries more passengers than any other route in the city, D. W.
