They are seniors Andrew T. Carroll, Rebecca D. Eckert, Benjamin C. Good, Robert J.

Meisl, Ross W. Pulkrabek, Darren S. Sheehan, Melissa L. Trocheck, Joshua S. Weismer, Thomas R.

Winpenny and Roger A. Wol-gemuth. Eight other students at the school were recently named sem-ifinalists in the competition, and have a chance for one of three sets of National Merit Scholarships to be awarded later in the school year. Recognition as commended students means the students have shown exceptional academic promise and are in the top 5 percent of more than 1 million high school students across the nation who took the 1988 PSATNational Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Heritage Center 'afternoon tea' due The Heritage Center of Lancaster County will hold an Afternoon Tea to recruit new volunteers to serve as gallery docents.

Members of the public are invited to attend the tea. which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 11 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Heritage Center, located on Penn Square in downtown Lancaster. Staff members will present information on volunteer opportunities and answer questions about the museum.

A tour of the galleries will be included. Gallery docents at the Heritage Center meet and greet visitors and share information with the public. Each volunteer will receive personal training to prepare him or her to work in the galleries. There is no obligation to become a volunteer. For more information contact Renee Ernay, curator of education, at 299-6440.

Fair opens David J. Kendig, former waiter Former Lancaster resident David Jordan Kendig, 29, of 227 E. 96th Apt. 5 New York City, died Monday at New York University Medical Center after an illness of 10 months. A former resident of Lancaster, Kendig had been a waiter at the Water Club restaurant in New York for seven years before his illness.

Kendig was a 1978 graduate of McCaskey High School and a 1982 graduate of Penn State University, where he earned a degree in business. Kendig was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of John F. Kendig, Lancaster, and the late Rachel Jordan Kendig. In addition to his father, Kendig is survived by a sister, Diane, wife of Calvin C.

Mansfield, Hampton, Va. Philip Evans, businessman, 63 Philip Evans, 63, former owner of a Brooklyn, N.Y., car service, died unexpectedly of natural causes Monday at St. Joseph Hospital. A resident of Evans was the husband of Barbara A. Christian Evans.

Evans moved here from Brooklyn in 1972, after his retirement. He had owned Kings Bay Car Service in Brooklyn. Evans was a member of the Lancaster Jewish Community Center. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Louis and Rose Simkowitz Evans. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Barbara wife of Joseph W.

Rodriguez, Lancaster; two stepsons, Paul A. Riti and Dominic L. Riti, both of Lancaster; a granddaughter; and two sisters, Esther, wife of Edward Gerstell, Long Island, N.Y., and Norma, wife of Harry Maltz, New York City. Zeddie Kelley, was meat cutter Zeddie S. Kelley 68, a retiree of Penn Dairies died Tuesday at his home, 743 S.

Marshall alter a long illness. He had been under a physicians care. He was the husband of Ruth G. Erisman Kelley. The couple observed their 48th wedding anniversary on Sept.

20. Kelley retired in 1982 after working 10 years for Penn Dairies, for a time as a night watchman. Before that, he was employed as a meat cutter and manager at the former Jacob Rieker meat business, 832 N. Queen St. He worked at Riekers for 22 years.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was discharged as a sergeant from Westover Field in Massachusetts. He was a member of Faith United Church of Christ. Born in Lititz, he was the son of the late Zeddie S.

and Olive A. Houck Kelley Sr. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Patricia wife of Donald W. Henderson, Lititz; a son, Willis Macun-gie; five grandchildren; and a brother, Gerald Lancaster. Darlington Hoopes, Socialist politician READING (AP) Darlington Hoopes, twice the Socialist candidate for president and a former Pennsylvania state legislator, has died.

Hoopes, 93, died Monday at the Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Spring Township near Reading. He died of natural causes, according to his son, Darlington Hoopes Jr. Hoopes ran for president on the Socialist ticket in 1952 against Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower and Democrat Adlai E. Stevenson.

Unlike the major candidates, Hoopes campaign cost him only $150. As a Socialist, he called for nationalization of banks, railroads, coal mines and the steel industry and for strengthening the United Nations and reuniting the Ger-manys. The wealthy have long used the power of government to enrich themselves, he said in a radio address Oct. 31, 1952. In a democracy, government is a tool that should be used to advance the common welfare.

On Election Day, he received 21,000 votes, to Eisenhowers 33 million. Hoopes also ran for president in 1956 and was the Socialists vice presidential candidate in 1944. 3 county high school bands earn honors Lancaster County high school bands took top honors in three out of four divisions in Saturday nights Cavalcade of Bands competition sponsored by Lancaster Catholic High School, 650 Juliette Ave. The school released the following results: Overall high music award, Manheim Township High School. It is the second year in a row the Blue Streaks have won the Crusader trophy.

Independence Conference first, Manheim Central High School. 53.95 points; second. Wilson High School, 49.15 points; third, Susquenita High School, 44.55 points; fourth. North East High School, 42.2 points. American Conference first, Penn Manor High School, 62.1 points; second.

Southwestern High School, 60.65 points; third. Cedar Crest. 56.4 points. Liberty Conference first, Manheim Township High School, 71.15 points; second, Spring Grove, 68.65 points. Yankee Conference first, Cumberland Valley High School, 68.5 points; second, Lampeter-Strasburg, 67.8 points.

Two other local bands, Elizabethtown and Lancaster Catholic, took part as exhibition bands and were not scored. Woman charged with drunk driving A Lancaster woman was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants after another car. police said, ran into hers on Columbia Avenue around 8p.m. Friday. Thompson. 34, of 21 Pickford Drive, drove her car from Conestoga Boulevard onto Columbia Avenue into the path of a car driven by Rosemary Jack-son. 57. of 506 Fairview Ave. Ms.

Thompson's car then collided with a car driven by Daryl S. Peck. 22. of Harrisburg, police said. Peck's car, police said, was stopped at Stonemill Road.

Alter the accident. Officer Thomas Zug charged Ms. Jack-son with driving under the influence of intoxicants. The accident is still under investigation. Ms.

Troegel Walkup, 93, of 100 Central Manor Road, Mountville, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday at her home after a long illness. She was the widow of Monte White Walkup. who died in 1952. Formerly of Shreveport, Mrs.

Walkup had lived in Lancaster County since the late 1950s. A homemaker, she was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Columbia and the Legion of Mary Society. Born in Shreveport, she was the daughter of the late Frank L. and Lillie Balfe Troegel. Surviving are a son, John Shreveport; a daughter, Shirley, wife of Charles D.

Newcomer, with whom she lived; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, James Troegel. and two sisters, Elizabeth Troegel and Catherine T. Risher, all of Shreveport. Bonnie R. Rider, 46 Atglen Bonnie R.

Rider, 46, of 315 High Atglen, died Tuesday morning at Lancaster General Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of Joseph A. Rider. A retired executive secretary, Mrs. Rider worked for the Somat Corp.

and Penquin Industries, both of Pomeroy. She had lived in Atglen for more than 15 years. Mrs. Rider was a member of Evangelical Christian Church of Towerville, where she was past secretary of the board of trustees, a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent, vacation Bible school director, past president of the Womens Society and a member of the Kids Club. Born in Coatesville, she was the daughter of Jean Ginnithan Collins, Parkesburg, and the late Warren Root.

She was the stepdaughter of Eugene Collins, Parkesburg. Surviving besides her husband, mother and stepfather are a son, Christian at home, and a sister, Penilynn, wife of Carl Kline, Palmdale, Calif. Margaret Henry, 78 Manheim Margaret A. Henry, 78, of 127 N. Grant Manheim, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning at Lancaster General Hospital after becoming ill at her home.

She was the wife of the late Dan G. Henry. Mrs. Henry retired in 1976 from the Raymark Industrial now Raymark Friction. She was a member of the Stiegel Roses Senior Citizens of Manheim.

She was born in Millersville, the daughter of the late Clayton and Daisy Gerber Reese. Surviving are a daughter, Carla wife of Robert C. Stirling, Manheim; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys, wife of Russel Zercher, Columbia, and Mildred Roney, Tennessee. Bradby survivors Former Lancaster County resident Edward R. Bradby 87, Pamunkey Indian Reservation, West Point, is also survived by two sisters, Katie Southward and Bernice Langston, and a brother, Russell, all of West Point.

Their names were inadvertently omitted from Tuesdays obituary. The New Era regrets the error. Mary Jane Rehkugler M.J. Rehkugler, 61 Lancaster Mary Jane Rehkugler, 61, of 265 Planetree Drive, died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday at Lancaster General Hospital.

She had been ill since November. She was the wife of Elvin D. Rehkugler. Mrs. Rehkugler was a member of Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir.

Born in Belsano, Cambria County, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Alta Buterbaugh Folckemer. Surviving besides her husband are three daughters: Bonnie wife of Leslie J. Runkle, and Mari Anne, both of Lancaster; and Alta M. Carpenter, Boise, Idaho; a son, Roy West Columbia, Texas; five grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy, wife of David Prine, Minneapolis. Ruth L.

Baker, 63 Lancaster Ruth L. Baker, 63, a retiree of the Grinnell died Tuesday afternoon at her home, 2727 Kimberly Road, after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Glenn S. Baker, who died in May 1988. Mrs.

Baker retired in 1985 after 42 years of service with the Columbia foundry, where she worked in customer relations. She was a member of the Grinnell Retirees Club. Mrs. Baker was a volunteer at the Mountville Library and a member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chestnut Hill, Columbia. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Harvey I.

and Pearl S. Sarbaugh Long. She is survived by two brothers, William H. Long I and John C. Long, both of Columbia; and a sister, Betty J.

Laudenberger, Columbia. Continued from B-1 At Tent City, Krista Martin of East Earl was taking care of Ellis, an animal that needs some taking care of. Ellis is a steer weighing nearly 1,300 pounds. A Garden Spot High School sophomore. Miss Martin planned to show Ellis in contests.

She didnt think he had much of a chance to shine in the spotlight. But she didnt care. Like other youngsters, Miss Martin was there for fun and to experience competition. Greased pig chases, pumpkin champs, food fests and animal contests it was a perfect start for the countys biggest fair. The fair ends Saturday with the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Pageant.

She had lived at the home since February 1986. Before retiring, Miss Olsen was an executive secretary for Western Electric in Kearny, N.J.,for more than 40 years. She was a member of Evangelical Free Church, Lakehurst, N.J., and Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church, Quarryville. Born in Jersey City, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Peder and Martha Halvorsen Olsen.

Surviving is a sister, Olga Winfield, Quarryville. Catheryn Samples, 79 Oxford Catheryn E. Samples, 79, of 1302 Hopewell Road, Oxford, died Monday at Brandywine Hospital in Coatesville after a long illness. She was the wife of Horace J. Samples.

Mrs. Samples had lived in the Oxford area for more than 60 years. During the 1960s and 1970s she conducted a non-denomina-tional Sunday school for young people in the Oxford community. She was a former member of Oxford Presbyterian Church. Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mabel Morrison Babb.
