FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 12 1924 COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL NEWS OF THE COUNTY SEQUOYAH COUNTY DEMOCRAT keep up with what' is going on ia Sequoyah county That county seems like home to me I lived in what is now Sequoyah county for twenty-one years I am well acquainted with your sheriff John Johnston I think yen could have a better man for sheriff than John Johnston Respectfully J-J BURCHFIEL i Mrs Mary Sanders a pioneer Indian citizen of Dwight Mission community spent several days in Sallisaw guest at the home of Mrs Sadie A Frye and State Senator and Mrs Frye Mrs Sanders is 78 years of age and her Visits to Sallisaw are few and far between and not like in former days when she was able te come here frequently She is the aunt of Attorneys Roy Frye Frye and Pliny Frye and Frye of the Democrat OLD SEQUOYAH COUNTY MAN PRAISES OUR SHERIIT Burchfiel a resident of Sequoyah county for more than twenty years but now a resident of Tennessee this week addressed a letter to The Democrat enclosing remittance covering his subscription and incidentally speaking a word of well deserved praise for John Johnston sheriff of this county and who is the Democratic nominee this year for the same office The letter is reproduced below: Madisonville Tenn No 6 Sequoyah County Democrat Sallisaw Oklahoma Dear Sirs: Find enclosed money order for (100 I am indebted to you for your paper and wish you to apply this amount upon my account and keep me on your list I like your paper and find it to be the best possible way for me to EVENTUALLY WHY NOT NOW CIll uoy Stephens age 22 of Gore and Mattie Stockstill age 18 of Gore Annie Jones age 16 of Webber Falls and Clyde Green age 21 of Webber Falls John Harmer age 81 of Muskogee and Audie Hammons age 21 of Koakogta Homer Hammond age 21 and Leafie Jones ago 22 Both of Gore Henry Linn age 82 of Slloam Springs Arkansas and Eula Buck age 28 of Slloam Springs Arkansas Clifford Sharp age 27 of McKey and Elsie Brewer age 20 of Sycamore 'Jack Anderson sge 88 of Hanson' and Ella Seratt age 81 of Vrona Frank age 38 of Black-gum and Dora Gober age 26 of Gore Lester Tackett age 19 of Vian and Lottie Gragg age 18 of Vian Henry Hulland age 82 of Fort Smith and Lucille Gatewiod age 29 of Fort Smith Rolan Pox age 86 of Vian and Elizabeth Fout age 21 of Vian SUITS FILED IN DISTRICT COURT Mr and Mrs Everet Nobles and children visited Mr- and Mrs Mitchell Saturday night and Sunday Mrs A Kumpe has returned from an ertended visit with her daughter at Christie Mr and Mrs Elmer Dreasler and daughter of Hulbert Oklahoma and Mr and Mrs Dunn and Pete Bean visited at the Mitchell home Monday Rufus Covington1 spent Saturday night with Felton Holder of Sallisaw CAMPBELL SCHOOL School is going on nicely now but will be out in another week May and Pearl Dodson are on the sick list this week Ather Ely and family visited relatives at Long Saturday There was no Sunday school Sunday but everybody come next Sunday and we will have Sunday school We soon will have a good road about here as the workmen are at work on the road now and are doing a good Job Uncle Frank Houser made his usual trip to North Vitw Sunday John Silk made a business trip to Sallisaw Saturday There is singing here every Saturday night Everyone welcome Albert Waters visited at Grant Town Sunday evening Henry Eagle of Belfonte visited his home here one day last week THE SIGNAL TOWER (by Cans High School) game with Mershon school and a fast game was witnessed by a large crowd The game resulted in a 6 to 1 win for Mershon but for seven innings it was a pitchers duel between Halleck Haskins for Buffington and Roy Coriey for Mershon and the score stood at the beginning of the eighth 1 to 0 for Mershon In the eighth Haskins weak ened and Mershon scored five more runs' Corley struck out 17 batters and was effective at the bat The small Coriey boy played' a star game at first and led his team in hitting The boys of the 4th grade won in the contestathnugh the summer except for one week They were Orville Chronister Elmer Jackson Standridge junior Norman Ray Robert Gann and James Feather Elmer Jackson scored highest in daily recitations Twenty five were perfect in attend ance the last month They are: JaiAs Myers Andrew Haskins Cly Lamb Effie Standridge Halleck Haskins Edna Fain Orville Chronister Thelma Chronister James Feather Standridge Melzia Chronister Levon Sparks Frank Israel Francis Israel Geraldine Haskins Francis Crow and Ras Bentley There were several perfect ones in the intermediate room but we do not have their names Our school bys played Prices Chapel August 29 and Big Lake Sept 2nd winning the first game 11 to 7 and the last one 6 to 1 All three of our teachers are in school in Tahlequah for the fall term forget the county singing convention at Buffington September 13 and 14 i ALL OUT OF SORTS? books and lling the stories' with pictures The baseball team (boys) from this place played the Buffington team at that place Friday September 6th The teams both played well in fielding but the Jones secretary-treasurer and A Dodson sponsor Purple and gold were chosen as their colors class flower white rose They chose -the stars through as their motto Miss Maurine Dodson Wanda Helen Dodson Miss Lucille Jones and Muriel Jones drove to Fort Smith Arkansas last Saturday They are students in the Southwestern Studio of Musical Art under Miss Coffee September 17 Constitution Day our classes in civics will have charge of the program in our assembly They will have a very entertaining and instructive program consisting of short talks on the founders of the constitution as well as appropriate readings and songs Prof Stanley formerly superintendent of the school here moved to Tahlequah Oklahoma where his daughter Miss Frieda will enter the Northeastern State Teachers college Mr Stanley will be superintendent of schools at Stone Bluff the ensuing term Supt Dodfeon accompanied by several of the students and some of the patrons of the school attended the opening of the Indian stomp dance at Red Bird Smith stomp grounds Iasi Monday evening They will favor the English and History classes with an account of this trip some time soon They all report a very interesting time Mr and Mrs A Dodson were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Carr of Roland last Saturday Miss Ruth Sexton and Shalah Sexton teachers of the Sadie school were visitors at Cans last week end Both will enter Northeastern State Teachers college this week Mrs Eppler sustained a painful injury while she was on her way to Tahlequah last week fracturing the bone of her left arm She was driving a car when it the home of Mr and Mrs Dunn and family Mrs Charlie Enyart and son Clinton of Buffington were guests ot Mrs John Bell Welch Friday Several from this place attended the show at Sallisaw Miss Ruby Winters of Rialto California is visiting relatives and friends at this place Mr Troy Worley left for Stillwater Oklahoma Where he will attend the A A college Miss Doshla Dooley returned home Friday from Muskogee Oklahoma where she has been visiting relatives and friends Mr Frank Evans of Fort Smith Arkansas spent the week end visiting his parents Mr and Mrs Evans Mr Carl Jones of Vian Oklahoma
