State lawmakers are so desperate to cut taxes they've come up with a plan any Missouri mother would love a week without sales taxes. Just one week, mind you Aug. 14-20, 2000 and only on some clothing items under $50. But for Missouri moms preparing their children for school, a sales tax-free week could be a bonanza. On a typical school outfit $49 blue jeans, $30 sweatshirt, $46 shoes a family could save about $8 in taxes.

Multiply that times two teenagers, three outfits a piece, and that family could save enough in taxes to buy mom a sweater. The sales tax-free week proposal is only in the planning stages. The House Ways and Means Committee heard the proposal Tuesday but took no action. Similar sales tax holidays have been tried in New York and Florida and were successes, the bill's sponsor, Rep. Dana Murray, D-Jennings, told the committee.

Along Main Street in Jefferson City, the idea was already raising eyebrows.
