14D The REGISTER, Napa, Calif. Saturday, July 1, 1972 Showbeat O' Toole tilts with Don Quixote role By DICK KLEINER TARQUINIA, Italy (NEA) The entire company shooting "'The Man of La Mancha" in this ancient part of Italy, once the seat of the Etruscan League, was waiting all morning for the arrival of the star, Peter O'Toole. James Coco, who plays Sancho Panza to O'Toole's Don Quixote, sat quietly. Arthur Hiller, the director, paced restlessly. The crew joked and laughed and fiddled with their equipment.

The horses and mules whinnied and pawed at the ground. Hours went by. No O'Toole. Eventually, as the sun moved higher in the sky, there was the sound of a motor and everybody looked down the bumpy road and there was a cloud of dust. Even before you could make out the Jeep, you could hear the loud Irish laughter of O'Toole.

"I did well this morning," he said. "I walked into the side of my caravan and knocked my nose off." For his role O'Toole wears a complete make-up, putty nose, false eyelashes, beard and mustache, wig. It takes a long time to put it all on. When he knocked the nose off, the make-up man had to start all over again. They rehearsed a while, with O'Toole on his horse and Coco on his donkey riding along, singing.

And then they had to break for lunch, before a frame was shot. O'Toole and Coco have been on the picture a long time and they're obviously tired. "I'd have gone nuts a long time ago." Coco said, "if I hadn't found Peter." "We've found each other," O'Toole said. "It would have been insupportable without They intend to continue their new-found friendship and perhaps work together again professionally. O'Toole says he'd like Coco to come to London for a week and do "The Last of the Red Hot Lovers," which made Coco a star.

cause he didn't get to do the film -Alan Arkin did it. But Coco says he's tired of the play, which he did for two years on Broadway. And, anyhow, he's miffed because he didn't get to do the film version--Alan Arkin did it. "It's a bloody shame," O'Toole said. "It's criminal the way they don't let people do their roles in the films." Neither appear to be aware of the irony of O'Toole's remark.

He was playing the part Richard Kiley created and there are many who think it was "criminal" that Kiley didn't get to play Don Quixote in the movie. Coco said he was going to pinch-talk for Johnny Carson on his NBC show this summer. He's been trying to wheedle 0'Toole into being a guest. "He's trying to blackmail me," O'Toole said. "'He'll show clips of 'The Ruling Class' if I appear with "The Ruling Class" is a film O'Toole produced and starred in to be released soon.

"You'll do it." Coco said. "Never." O'Toole said. "I'll never do it. I did one of those bloody talk shows 12 years ago and it was appalling. All those talk shows are mediocre.

There's nothing I despise as much as Coco thinks "The Ruling Class" will be the big competition for "The Godfather" in next year's Oscar derby. He says it's great. O'Toole is inclined to agree. "If they release 'La Mancha' this year (and United Artists is planning a December release)," O'Toole says, "they'll be insane-they'll be in competition with themselves." The relationship between the two actors is a good one. Coco calls O'Toole "the mick," and Peter retaliates by calling Coco "the guinea." Coco keeps mispronouncing the names of O'Toole's films- -he talks about 'Mooney's War" (instead of Murphy's and "'Lying In Winter" (instead of "Lion In (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN.)
