BI KATHLEEN KOEPNICK Dunkirk airport will' be used as an alternate airbase by airliners if current plans of" CAA, Northwestern Airlines and Manager 'Koepnick jell For some time Koepnick has been trying' to Interest airlines section to designate Dunkirk an alternate airport on their route More recently he has been soft-pedaling the project until assured for normal field facilities for these hypothetical airline travellers. The original prodding, however, bore fruit When two CAA executives visited the field at th-'instigation ot Northwestern. The visitors Were Andrew C.

Miller, senior air carrier inspector and his assistant, Theodore G. Vaky. They flew in from La Guardia Field in CAA's beautiful Howard airplane with, a Wright 320 horser powered engine. Their report, will be 100 percent realistic for both primarily pilots with impressive personal safety records. Vaky has amassed 3,000 hours in his 15 years of flying, 11 which spent flying ships for United Airlines.

Miller started flying in '36, a Navy flyer for Right years, and has.his airline transport ticket on top of a brace of civilian and service ratings, Qoth look young for so important a post but both won their jobs in competitive examinations. Miller, who also has 3,000 switched to CAA because he believes the entire future of the country is based upon the multitudinous ramifications of the aviation industry. And the entire future of aviation- is wrapped up in the local operator. Thus, his desire to oversee the, local pictures -which make up the mosaic which is today's over-all aviation picture The mottr. of Miller and his staff is "safety and profit go hand in as their immediate concern was the safety angle of Dunkirk's field if we are designated it would mean anytime weather precluded Northwestem's landing on its scheduled field they would sit down, here.

Buffalo and Erie ports are already approved as N. W. alternates, but we frequently have ceiling here when ports do. not. X-C pilots use Dunkirk frequently instead of Erie, Buffalo or Jamestown because our PERSONAL LOANS PAYABLE IN MONTHLY INSTALLMENTS ARE AVAILABLE AT THIS TRUST COMPANY AT LOW BANK 'RATES.

local weather is better Thirteen states make up the region Miller and Vaky cover. Several hundred airdromes within that territory are angling for this airline trade. Dunkirk will be tht envy of all if it is so designated, Rober A. Lucas of R. F.

D. No. 1 Dunkirk, is a recent first flight- er out at Dunkirk airport. His nine and Roger, five resent being too young to indulge since they've heard daddy raving about' this thing called "aviation." Hospital Pilot Little Bobby -Bost of Dunkirk has spent five of his seven years, in Newton Memorial hospital 'He and his companions spend much time taking sun baths on the roof, with nothing to look at but sky. so have.grown proficient in aircraft recognition.

Bobby's parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bost.of Park avenue, told their neighbor, STan-' ley Sadowski, how these little spinal patients lift themselves, in imagination, from their cots and pilot planes "all over the world." Tiring ol: that they pretend the planes carry family and friends to For Her Birthday Marilyn Swanson's loth birthday a week ago was celebrated anew, this week, at Dunkirk airport when her uncle, Dewey Carlson of 605 Lark street, that city, made her a present of a flight over the Grape Belt. Marilyn and her parents, the Rev. and Mrs.

Newton oC Gerard, have been the house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Carlson. All three went aloft and became the latest members of the airport's first flighters. The Rev.

Carlson is pastor of the Gerard Methodist church. Young Dewey Carlson, also went aloft that day. He has an arrangement with his dad whereby he does specific chores in exchange for flight lessons. Should you see 16 year-old Dick Wysynski settin' 'em. up in a local 'soft drink parlor you'll know the young Dunkirk high senior is celebrating solo-ing out at municipal 'field, Sunday.

Young Wysynski proves the contention of the CAA officials who dropped minimum pre-solo hours from the requisites for a student certificate. Had he started flying last month he would have had to take a minimum of eight dual hours. The new rules became effective July 1 and Dick solo-ed visit them Sadowski is a private pilot who loves to prove how aviation can brighten the corner where you are, so he and Bobby's parents evolved plan to project some of his dream from fancy to reality, With permission from Bob's doctors and nurses they flew over, circling lazily and dipping their wings in aerial salute. From every cot came the wave of a tiny hand armed before hand a kerchief. First daddy flew over, then Mommie, then Betsy Standcra who loves Bobby like a brother.

Eich returned to the field t.xalted by the obvious thrill their remote-control visit had given Bobby and his pals. Said his mother, "I'm sure occasional 'visits' like thai will do Bobby more good than all the therapy and all the medicine in the world. With Stanley's help I hope to fly over frequently. in five and a half hours. He might have done it in less but his continuity was interrupted by a bivouac in Rome army camp with fellow CAP-ers.

Dick is communications officer with rank of sergeant in the Dunkirk civilian ail- patrol, His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wysynski of 321 Lake Shore drive plan to have Dick study law in Buffalo University after he is from Dunkirk high, next fall. -Meantime Dick says, "nothing in all my life can ever give me more 'kick' than flying a plane all by myself." Furlough At Airport Mr. and Mrs.

Walter Slominski of 66 North Ermine street, Dunkirk, are. warning family and friends, "If you want to see Walter during his week's furlough 'home' you'd better go out to the airport." Walter is Lieutenant Slominski of Uncle Sam's Army, who will be remembered as a science from local schools. Lieut. Slominski's avocation is flying so he utilized his precious leisure in Washington, D. to learn flying just like an ordinary civilian.

Currently he is stationed in Cleveland and recently he so.lo-ed at Willoughby airport nearby. Sunday, his first furlough day, he came to the airport and made a brace of assignments to get checked out and fly He is class of When Mrs. E. E. Olimart of Dayton 'decided to fly to Boston, next morning with her Navy lieutenant son she stayed awake all night "worrying." She told the story on herself as she F.nd Lieut.

J. M. flew into Dunkirk in his Aeronca. She admitted her worry was "silly" saying she had enjoyed every minute of. it.

Th-a Navy lad's leave is only a week and.his mother's decision to accompany him not only initiated her to the thrill of flying, but gave her more time with her boy, So sufe is she of future flights Mrs. Olunart is starting a flight scrap book. This item is exhibit one, in it. The women's flying group at municipal airfield was augmented this week by Kitty Stanbery, daughter of Mrs. Lester Graf of 5 Taft place, Dunkirk and Cleveland, Tenn.

Miss Stanbery soloed out of Locell Field, Cleveland, before leaving'Tennessee '39 at Dunkirk High and a graduate of the Case School of Applied Science where he got his degree in mettalurgical engineering.
