THOMAS Montclair resident Amy Hatrak, interior designer and cultural historian, received the Preservation Award of 1993, presented to her by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for her restoration of the 1899 Burrage Mansion on Bostons Commonwealth Avenue converting the French Renaissance home into 30 suites for adult living.

Meeting with representatives from the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA) and with architect Leslie I. Brown, IAI, of Boston, she remembers especially having to meet the stringent requirements of the Boston Fire Department, currently the strictest in the nation since the Cocoanut Grove fire in November 1942, when out of 8300 guests, 613 were injured or dead. Mrs.

Hatrak researched the original colors in the Common Rooms, supervised the restoration, and furnished Rooms with as many period pieces as possible. She was especially fascinated by the tur-reted solarium, which had a full wall made of coral, decorated with orchids, from which water cascaded.
