(Dan Rickter Photo) Damp Spring, Board To Study Upper Valley Frost Cause Farm Problem Franchise For Garbage Dump One of the dampest springs in the history of Napa County is making this a difficult season for farmers, particularly grape growers. it was reported today by Jack Fiske. director of the University of California Agricultural Extension Service. To aggravate the problems of soggy orchards and vineyards, a killing frost struck early Sunday morning and fringed the top of mountain ranges surrounding Napa Valley with snow.

Fiske said Farm Adviser James Lider is in the field today to determine the extent of damage. Fortunately, he pointed out, the canes are still in the early stages of development. "We aren't out of the woods vet. There may be more frost." he said. "We know there was some damage, but it will be several days before an appraisal can be made." The almost continuous rain for the past month has kept both grape and prune growers from working the land.

Normally by this time the cover crops have been disced under, but now the land is so wet it cannot be worked. Because the land could not be prepared, work on new vineyards has been held up and Fiske said there was quantities of grape plants heeled in waiting for the weather to clear. He said that Napa County prune orchards are not out of the jacket stage and the plant tissue has toughened up some against brown and green rot, but it will be two or three weeks before an appraisal of the crop can be made.
