THE EDITOR'S LETTER BOX CANT LET THIS HAPPEN Bite eijerter Editoria I Page Monday, February 34, 1944 To Take Tomorrow Register believes this criticism has been unwarranted. The boundaries for the sewer district were established by professional engineers not politicians. If it had been handled otherwise it would have been wrong. The district boundaries relate to drainage problems in relation to the municipal system and have nothing to do with efforts toward favoritism on the behalf of anyone. Health authorities have substantiated the statements about the threat of disease from the present system.

Professional men have acknowledged the need for the new sewer and storm drainage system. It has been private funds not tax money used to advertise and publicize the bond election; citizens interested in the welfare of the community contributed this money from their own pockets. Tomorrow is election day and it is an important election day for voters in the Napa Municipal Sewer District. The Napa Register wholeheartedly endorses this measure, which requires a two-thirds majority of the voters if it is to be apporved. Yes, this is going to raise taxes and add more of a burden to the already burdened taxpayers.

But, if this measure fails, even a greater tax burden may face local citizens along with a grave health threat. Which course is best to take? There is only one logical answer a yes vote in tomorrows Fage 4 One Logical Course Why do so many people and organizations support the 7.9 million sewer bond issue which faces local voters tomorrow? Their reasons are actually quite easy to understand. The public-spirited Napans serving on the Citizens for Sewer Bonds Committee are convinced of the need for passage of the issue. They realize that the present sewer and storm drain systems are overloaded. They realize that a serious public health hazard is created when raw sewage backs up through manholes and onto streets and sidewalks during storms.

They realize that if the modern ization and expansion of the present system is not accomplished now it must be done later at even greater expense to the voters and taxpayers. Members of this committee, others supporting the issue and organizations backing the program as well as those associated with the sanitation district have nothing more to gain from passage of the measure than anyone else in the Napa area. These men, women and organizations have demonstrated a desire to see the orderly growth and development of the area. They too are taxpayers. They too are interested in health and sanitation.

Should an epidemic strike the area they too would be endangered. These people have been criticized by some for their efforts and The Napa DREW PEARSON Fighters Present Interesting Contrast Shoe On Other Foot EDITOR, REGISTER: The Beatles. They have raised more controversy, or rather, more controversy has been raised over them than over any singers evert Their records are numbers one and two, not Just in the U.S., but in the world. They have made so many firsts its unbelievable. For instance, the Beatles are the only singers to have a million seller before the record was even released, as was the case with I Want To Hold Your Hand." Everywhere the Beatles have performed the crowd has been record-breaking.

At their performance at Carnegie Hall I believe the Beatles received the loudest and longest applause ever awarded in that hall. I might add the crowd wasnt just teen-agers. Many adults were present, including Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller and her friends. I really dont understand why adults cricitize the Beatles so persistently.

I personally think that if you like them, you like them, and if you dont, say you dont and then leave it at that Some people make fools of themselves by saying, I watched them on TV last night. Theyre terrible. I mean why even watch and listen to them if theyre so terrible? Another point Id like to make is, since when do performers have be raving beauties to be good singers? I dont understand this sudden emphasis on looks. Sure, the Beatles have long hair and tight clothes, but are they ugly? or just different? And, sure, everyone to his opinion, but these adults who make their opinions sound like a national generalization gripe me! All of a sudden millions of adults have turned into music critics. They think they are gifted with the ability to tell if a record is technically, harmonically and rhythmically, good.

These people hear a Beatle record, dislike it, and automatically stamp a stereotype on all Beatle records. Viewers were baffled when they saw the reaction of the audience on the Ed Sullivan show when the Beatles came on. Those crazy teen-agers, some said, without mentioning the adults they saw, actually screaming as loud as the teen-agers. Why? they ask. Why do they act like that? Why do they try to figure us out and analyze us? Why not just accept our attitude toward the Beatles as hearty enthusiasm? They ask us why we act like that.

We dont know, it just comes naturally. We certainly dont plan to scream, and wouldnt, if we didnt think the Beatles were fabulous! I love the Beatles. I love the way they sing. Its a new sound, loud, clear, fresh. The words really fit the situation.

All of the Beatles are honest, clean, wholesome guys. So, if you really like the Beatles, disregard the criticism you hear about them, and remember, with a group like that you know you should be glad. TEEN-AGE FAN, Napa. YEARS AGO a Register, Feb. 24, 1939.) suti and Mel Marshall.

EDITOR, FEGISTER: May I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks for reporter John Egans cooperation during Childrens Dental Health Week. This apparently successful program would not have been possible without his time and effort, together with The Napa Registers public services department. Speaking personally and as Chairman of the Dental Health Committee, I want the entire staff to know their assistance was most appreciated.

TED P. PIERCE, D. D. S. Napa EDITOR, REGISTER: Issue needs to be taken with a letter by Allen Bradley condemning a recommendation of the Sierra Club (I am not a member) to establish a new wilderness area in the Salmon Mountains.

In the letter he refers to wilderness areas as available only to minority groups such as hikers and horseback riders. This is shallow thinking indeed. In truth, these areas are restricted to no one with the exception of the very small minority whose health will not permit travel of this sort. Basically, people restrict themselves from these areas through their personal tastes and drives or lack of same. This does not mean the growing interest in, and need for wilderness areas, which will be even greater in the crowded years to come, must be curbed because interest is also growing in various types of motorized vehicles.

Mr. Bradley has apparently never taken advantage of a trek into a wilderness area (under his own power or with the help of a horse). If he had he would know the contributions to mental and physical well-being to be gained through walking, climbing, fishing, hunting, wildlife and botanical research, mineral exploration, or just plain meditation in an environment free of the hustle and bustle of more accessible areas. Public camping areas designed for motor vehicles, trailers, campers, are being expanded continually and both mountain and seashore facilities are available in quantities. A few hours drive from Napa can deliver you to two national parks and a national seashore presently under development, thirty-five fine state parks being expanded and improved constantly, hundreds of national forest ss i maintained camp-grounds and innumerable private campgrounds, trailer parks, etc.

This, compared with less than ten wilderness areas within the same geographic area. I not only second the Sierra Clubs recommendations, but also recommend our state and national legislators research other primitive areas that may be set aside for use by our future generations. L. Lyons, distiller of Jack Daniel and Old Forrester bourbon. Sonny Liston originally had the backing of underworld leaders. As a result, he was investigated by the late Sen. Estes Kefauver and warned to clean himself up.

Three years ago, Ray Cole, investigator for the Kefauver committee, told Liston: You see that brief case over there? Its all Sonny Liston and its all bad. But last month, the same Ray Cole told me he had probed Listons current connections and found them clean. And on April 11 last year, after I had taken Sonny to call on Senator Kefauver, the late Senator wrote me: I was glad to see Sonny Liston. I think he has improved a great deal. I saw the other day that hed gone out to the penitentiary where he had served in the early 50s and sat down with some of the inmates and had a talk with them.

I thought that was very good. Interests Coming from different backgrounds, with different educations and different backers, it is understandable that Clay and Liston should have different interests. But it is unusual that one should take up the cult of the Black Muslims, the other the big brothers and the problems of juvenile delinquency. I was bom a Muslim, Im told," Clay recently informed Dave Brady of the Washington Post. My race is descended from the people of Egypt Africa whose religion has always made them Muslims.

The Muslims dont believe in drinking, smoking, taking dope, committing crimes. They teach you to be clean. Chubby Checkers and Sammy Davis married white WASHINGTON Regardless of the strength, speed, and stamina of the two giant Negroes who battle it out tomorrow for the heavyweight championship of the world, Charles Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay present an interesting contrast. The first is the son of an Arkansas cotton picker who sired 25 children. He cannot read or write and, after the family moved to St.

Louis, went the way of so many products the city streets to a reformatory and jail. The second is the son of a respected Louisville Negro family, reasonably well educated by a strict, Godfearing mother, and named for his thrice-great grandfather, a slave, who in turn was named for Lincolns minister to Russia, Cassius Marcellis Clay. Liston is a man of few words, looks morose as if nursing a grudge against the world. Clay bubbles with verbiage. Champ Im gonna drive down Walnut St.

in a Caddy on Derby Day, Clay said last year. Pretty girlsll be there. Tm cool, man. Im wanting to know them worse than they want to know me only they dont know it. But next Derby Day Ill be the heavyweight boxing champion of the world! Said taciturn Sonny Liston during a drive around Washington last year: I wouldnt want to live in the White House too far to carry your garbage to the street.

Again, passing the Senate: Thats the Seagram building. Everyone who goes in there takes the Fifth. Cassius Clay has had the paternal backing of 1 1 Louis GRIN AND Danger Castro is more than embarrassment. Hes a danger. While he lasts he is an inspiration to other Latin American Communists to try to do likewise in their countries.

Besides, Cuba can be a training school for Red guerrillas and agents from all over Latin America. When they get their diplomas they can return to their own countries to practice their special kind of scholarship. No wonder the United States wants Castro out. Backyard Meanwhile, the United States is up to its neck in Southeast Asia, in the Chinese Communists backyard, trying to keep the people there pro-Western and anti- Communist or, if not anti-Com-munist, at least neutral. This is as insufferable for the Red Chinese as Castro for the United States.

So they can he expected to try to dominate their continent as soon as they feel ready, particularly since they seem to have an even fiercer Communist missionary zeal than the Russians. But the two giants, the United States and Red China, are momentarily frustrated in their ambitions. As of now the United States clearly does not seem to know what to do next about Castro. Possibilities A direct attack on his island would risk some grue some possibilities, like war with Russia, alienating the rest of Latin America, and losing trust, respect and influence elsewhere. As for the indirect method of attack by Cuban exiles with American backing this country has painful tions of what happened when it was tried.

This was Presi-d Kennedys disastrous failure in 1961. Right now in Southeast Asias South Viet Nam where this country has put over 15,000 troops and more than $5 billion in aid the United States is trying to prevent a takeover by North Viet Nams Red guerrillas. Avoided The Red Chinese, who have split with Russia and respect American nuclear weapons so long as they dont have any, so far have avoided direct participation in South Viet Nam and the rest of Southeast Asia. They dont have to hurry. They tower over their neighbors, as this country does over its neighbors in this hemisphere.

When they feel strong enough, it seems inevitable they will move. Even now, despite all its efforts, the United States is not making much progress in South Viet Nam. But if tomorrow the Red guerrillas from North Viet Nam abandon the fight, it could hardly be more than temporary truce. Th AsftoirjUrfl Pres women," Clay continued. The Muslims dont believe in intermarriage of the races.

The white people dont like it either. Theres some terrible things going on in this country. A lot of them are happening to the Negro dont know what the Negro in America is thinking about, and thats why a lot of you are scared. Liston mixes, and I get criticized for associating with my own kind. And thats all right with me.

Shot Asked whether President Lincoln and President Kennedy were wrong in trying to bring the two races together. Clay replied:" They were both shot, werent they? Clays secretary is named X. Clay has attended Black Muslim meetings in New York, is reported planning to give part of his proceeds from the fight tomorrow to the Muslims. Liston is giving half of his TV take from Washington area to Big Brothers. Dinner Last year, attending the Big Brothers dinner, Sonny sat near the man who a few months later was to become President of the United States, listened as Lyndon Johnson told of his early life.

Ill never forget shining shoes, herding goats, hitting the road," said the then vice president in his advice to youngsters. "Yet I rate the second highest oftice of public trust in the greatest country in the world. He advised boys to study in school, set their goals high, follow the Golden Rule. Watch Earlier, Liston had visited the Senate, received from the vice president a gold wrist-watch inscribed, To Sonny Liston from LBJ, which remains today the most cherished of his possessions. Interviewed before 800 diners, Liston told in a halting manner of the problems of playgrounds, truancy, and' delinquency.

The bad kids are told to stay off the playgrounds, he said, and theyre the ones who need them most. Trouble I first got into trouble by findin efore they was lost, he coniessed. Liston was late for the dinner. He had gone out to visit Washingtons neglected Junior Village, and stayed there three hours instead of one. All this marble and gold trimmins at the Supreme Court, the Capitol, and those other places, he said, and no money for these kids at Junior Village.

It dont make sense. Those are the varying views on race, religion, and social status of the two men who will be fighting for the worlds heavyweight championship tomorrow. Rell-McClnrt Syndicate THOUGHTS Yet have regard to the prayer of thy servant and to his supplication, Lord my God, hearkening to the cry and to the prayer which thy servant prays before thee this day 1 Kings 8:28. JAMES MARLOW Reflect About WASHINGTON When Americans stop being mad at Fidel Castro long enough to reflect about the shoe on the other foot, Red China comes to mind and it isnt pleasant. Since the Red Chinese are not the mousy type this country can be sure its desire to eliminate Castro and Marlow nism from this hemisphere is matched by Red Chinas ardor to rid all Asia of Western influence.

The more so since this country has some history of doing unto others what it doesnt want others to do to the United States. The classic example was in missiles. Irritated The Russians were irritated to no end when the United States put missiles in their backyard, in Turkey and Italy. But when Russia put missiles in Cuba the United States screamed and there was a crisis. This was resolved when Russia pulled its missiles out of Cuba and this country took its missiles out of Turkey and Italy.

One of this countrys great embarrassments of the century was to see communism not only get a foothold in its backyard, in Cuba, but survive and, more or less, flourish.
