The ladies of the Society have determined to rear a mon- i ument which will reflect credit upon the city; but they have not fully determined to do so this year--although they would like to very much.

With the funds on hand, they do not feel like letting the contract, They are insufficient to complete such an one as they desire, and as they are averse to going in debt, they will very likely defer the letting until a more auspicious time. The Society have left untried no honest effort to raise money, and each member pays an annual sum to the common fund. The donations have been small, and only one has given as much a hund-ed dollars. The only method of raising money, after donations fell off, was by fairs and festivals, the interest on deposits and the sale of cook books. The cook books, though a valuable acquisition to any household, and worth more than the price asked for them, have not all been sold, but only about one-half of them The hard times have operated unfavor ably ou their sale.

The Society has received fully twenty-five designs, probably more, of hich it has examined, Portsmouth, Cincinnati, Memphis and Cambridge City, Ind architects in mar ble will compete for the contract. He was a young man named Albert Ironsides, hailing from Dayton, Ohio, and was evidently nan compos mentis, but of sufficiently sound mind to make a successful horse thief. It appears that his last offense was taking a horse from that vicinity in November, and the Marshal having received a description of the young man by mail, watched his chance to nab him. Last Ironsides applied to the station house for lodging, and as he was a suspicious looking fellow he was shrewdly interviewed and identified as the thief. Its lugubrious attempts to do this, are amusing.
