Napa Marshes Added Fourteen Waterfowl Areas, Opens Oct. 16 5,000 Acres To Be Used This Year On Agreement Of Company, State Boxing Show Set For Next Month SIX. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1953. PAGE Chiefs Propare For First GVC Game Friday Coach Paul Lathrop ran his Napa College Chiefs through a long scrimmage last evening to prepare them for their first Golden Valley Conference game against Sierra College (formerly Placer J. on Friday at Memorial Stadium.

Th Chiefs, who were not too impressive in their game with the College of Marin last Friday, are scheduled fof another gruelling workout tonight. Outstanding in last night's workout was Fred Negri, who came out late for the team. Negri, a veteran guard for the Indians last season, turned in an excellent job at ona of the defensive guard positions. Even Bell showed that he wanted to make the starting lineup for the Sierra game, as he also was doing his job at defensive guard. Norm Uranv came up with the outstanding defensive job among the backs.

Ha. 1 running by wingback Jim Miller was the best offensive job of tha woikout. The Chiefs added another member to their squad when Wes Fix st turned out for the center position. Frost played for the Indians in 1950 and 1951 as a center and should help the Chiefs in this posiion. He weighs 185 pounds and is six feet tall.

Indians Suffer Through! Rough 2-Hour Scrum Disappointed with his teams showing against Sacramento last Friday night. Coach Bob Covey ran his players through a rugged two-hour scrimmage last evening. The tough workout saw the Indians lose; the services of Mike Webb, who had been moved to the second string center spot, as he dislocated his left shoulder and is out for the season. Bob Red wine, a newcomer from Merced, received a broken nose. This was another tough blow for, the Napa eleven as Redwine, who stands six Nfeet and weighs 180 pounds, was being counted on at one of the tackle positions.

During the workout there was a complete reshuffling of personnel with only five members of the starting eleven in last weeks game being on the fiist Two of these players were moved to new positions with Tom Gomez moving back to his old spot at fullback from the left halfback position, and Ed Jimison being switched from left end to right tackle. The three players to keep their positions were Jack Pieper at left tackle, Bill McMillan at center, and Jim Duff at right end. In the wholesale switches, BUI Burger took over for Jimison at the left end; Bill McClure moved from center to left guard; Larry Bailey moved from defensive halfback to right half, and Russ Jenkins at left half. The other two spots were a toss-up between Elmer Crane and Jeff Palmer at right guard, and Harold Griffiths and Duane Hudson at quarterback. Jenkins, who missed the Sacramento game because of an injury, is a letterman from last season.

Ron Garcia, a shifty 135-pound left halfback, is expected to battle Jenkins for the starting position in the Petaluma game on Friday. Garcia was dressed only in gym clothes best night, as he is still being bothered by a hip pointer. Two new men, who are now in shape, are Fred Green, a center, and Forrest Ford, a tackle. Green is a transfer from Richmond, who stands six feet and weighs 160 pounds. Ford is 186 pounds and also stands six feet.

WORLD SERIES STARTERS Carl Erskine, left, the Brooklyn Dodgers and Allie Reynolds, right, of New York Yankees are scheduled to face each other on the mound in the opening game of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. The ICF's latest venture into the field of sports will bring boxing to Napa egrly next month. Bob Cavagnaro and Ai McDaniels, who will handle the shows, went on a prospecting trip last night to San Franc feco's Civic Auditorium to check talent at the Golden Gloves bouts being held there under the auspices of the S. F. Examiner.

While there, they contacted Al Sandell and made a bid for a part in the AAU setup which would assure top amateur shows for the local contests. The AAU, a national organization which sets up rules and regulations to guide and protect practically all amateur sporting events has as its culmination point the handling of the Olympic Games. Also contacted on the S. F. junket were Sid Flaherty and Spider Roach, who operate stables of professional and ama-teuer boxers.

From the three sources, the Golden Gloves, Flaherty and Roach, will come the contenders for Napas first boxing card in many years. Notre Dame Named Number One-Team NEW YORK UP) Mighty Notre Dame, despite the protestations of Coach Frank Leahy that the Irish would be sub-par, ruled the roost today as the No. 1 football team in the country. Apparently everyone except Leahy thought Notre Dame was loaded this year. The South Bend outfit was ranked first in the pre-season poll of The Associated Press and No.

1 in the first survey after the season got under way. Most of the sports writers and sportscasters polled were impressed with the manner in which the Irish whipped Oklahoma 28-21 last Saturday. Michigan State, the mythical national champion last year, was tabbed for second. The Spartans, in the Big Ten for the first time, had trouble beating Iowa 21-7. Dressen hopes hell be able to discard the pad and some of the bandage by game time. If Furillo does have to miss in addition to holding the National League batting title. Dressen said yesterday he would play either Don Thompson or Duck Williams in right field if he has to replace Furillo.

Hes swinging just the same as ever, said Dressen after Furillo hit auxiliary scoreboard in right The Yanks still were a bit concerned about Gene Woodling, whose hand was swollen from an Injury received two weeks ago. Gene, too, used a padded bat in batting practice. It didn't seem to hamper him much, for he hit two or three balls into the right field seats. Woodling was sure hed be all right. SAN FRANCISCO The Napa Marshes were added today to the 14 waterfowl management areas which will be open to unattached hunters throughout California when duck hunting season starts October 16.

The water-fowl hunting area approximately 5,000 acres of marshes owned by the Leslie Salt company was opened for this seasons hunting under an agreement between the firm and the State Depart-mens of Fih and Game. It is accessible from State Highway 48 the Black Point Cutoff), or by boat. Spprial Napa Marshes hunting permits, good for the entire 1953 season, are available at $3.00 in Napa from Lantow and Moore; Yates Cochrane, and Georges Gun Shop; and in Vallejo from Al's Sport Shop. Cobb and Spring, Steffen's Shop and at Department of Pish and Game offices, Ferry Building, San Francisco, and 928 street, Sacramento. The Napa permits, good anywhere in the Departmenf-managed shooting area, are needed in addition to valid hunting licenses and Federal duck stamps, according to Robert Lassen, game management supervisor for the Department's Region III.

"The Leslie Salt people have given the unattached hunter a big break in allowing the Department of Fish and Game to come In and manage their Napa marshes for hunting, Lassen commented. There will be no limit on the number of hunters allowed into the Department-controlled area and no trespassing will be permitted elsewhere. A 100 per cent display of sportsmanship this year may mean renewal of the publics hunting privileges next year. Let's hope the hunters earn it, Lassen added. The area can be reached from the Sear's Point Road (Highway 48) and by boat from South and Napa Sloughs and or the Napa River.

Six boat liveries in the general area should be able to provide the necessary water transportation for those who dont bring their own craft. Access by water will be easier than by road, as parking space along Highway 48 is extremely limited, Lassen said. This waterfowl shooting area is open to public hunting under permit, and has made available through the cooperative efforts of the Leslie Salt Company. It is accessible from State Highway 48 at Cross Island, or by boat via South Slough, Napa Slough andor Napa River. Boat rentals are available at private resorts and boat landings located along the river.

Observe all rules and regulations, and plea.se be guided by the following. 1. Do not dump or scatter trash in the area. 2. Do not dig holes in levees or in any way damage the levees or other structures on the area.

3. Know tide changes as the water in the many sloughs are a fected. China Slough is not navigable on a minus tide. 4. When anchoring boats along mam sloughs allow enough anchor chain for changes in water levels.

5. Water in larger ponds becomes rough at tunes. 6. Do not wade in salt ponds or sloughs. Bottoms are soft and ir-icgular.

7. Provide your own drinking water no fresh water available on the aiea. 8. Study the map and know your area. For your guidance, all Department Management Area signs are numbered according to areas shown on your map.

May Be It In Browns Move NEW YORK (Pj Co-owner Del Webb of the New York Yankees, representing a Western group, was set today to resume negotiations to purchase the St. Louis Browns with hopes of transferring the franchise to the Pacific Coast. If Webb is successful, it virtually means that Baltimore is out of the picture.

The Baltimore group, still battling bitterly for a major league franchise, also had a strong bid in for the Browns controlling stock. Webb was instrumental in blocking Baltimore's attempt to buy the Browns franchise last Sunday. Unable to come to a decision last night regarding the fate of the Browns, the American League owners were scheduled to tackle the problem again late today. It was the circuits third meeting in three days. The American League did comeisot to two concrete decisions last night after four hours of bickering and haggling with Brownie President Bill Veeck and his associates, who own the majority stock of the Browns.

1. It authorized Webb to negotiate on behalf of unnamed interests for the 79 per cent control of the Brownie stock held by Veeck. 2. It announced, through President Will Harridge, that there definitely would be no American League baseball in St. Louis in 1954.

The beleaguered Veeck, balked in his efforts to move the Browns to Baltimore, expressed readiness to sell out, provided his price of was met. It was not known whether Webb's group was willing to bid that high but the Baltimore delegation made a firm offer of $2,236,000. There was a possibility the league might settle for Kansas City if Los Angeles and Baltimore lose out. Kansas City has made a formal application. Webb declined to disclose the identity of the group he was representing but it generally was presumed he was negotiating for buyers from the West Coast.

A Los Angeles group, headed by Mayor Norris Poulsen, promised to put up and said it could raise within 10 days. By JACK HAND NEW YORK (JP) Allie Reynolds' right arm and Carl Furillos aching pinky may hold the key to the New York Yankee Brooklyn World Series opening tomorrow at Yankee Stadium. If Reynolds can flash his 1952 winning form, odds favoring the Yankees probably will lengthen. Reynolds simply blew his fast ball past Dodger sluggers like Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella and Gil Hodges last year. But until the final weeks of this season, he was only a pale carbon of his old self.

Well know after the first two innings whether he still has it, said Dodger Manager Chuck Dressen at yesterdays stadium workout. I saw him pitch last week when he struck out 11 but he was throwing the curve not that 1952 fast ball. If Reynolds should be knocked out early, it would be a severe blow to Manager Casey Stengels chances of an unprecedented fifth straight championship. He wasnt going to use Reynolds in the. first game until Whitey Fords late-season wobbles made him change his mind.

Stengels pitching plans are set all such as occurred in Sundays with Reynolds, Eddie Lopat and Vic San Francisco 49ers-Philadelphia Raschi, in that order, although he 71 of the 98 first-place votes cast. This was good for a total of 907 points on the basis of 10 for first place, nine for second and so on down the line. Eagles game at San Francisco. Bell, in a bulletin sent to all club presidents and head coaches yesterday, said it is up to them to hold meeting with coaches and players and to bring to their attention the seriousness of a repetition of the incident that occurred in San Francisco. The commissioner said- he had not received a full report on Sunday's riot in Kezar Stadium.

Police had to be called to break up the free-for-all w'hich involved fans as well as players. Bell said he would take no action on theincident until he had all the facts. insists on a Raschi or call for the No. 3. Obviously, he counts on Reynolds to come back for No.

4 and possibly even for No. 7 if it goes that far. If Old Case gets a chance to close it out sooner, Reynolds will be in the bullpen. That all is based on a 1952 Reynolds. A first-game knockout could scramble the entire plan.

Furillo, who tested his well-bandaged hand in a special 15-minute batting practice, fully intends to play. There always remains the possibility that he might re-injure the 'ond or find it impossible to swing hard in a real ball game. Saints Drop 33-13 Game To Winters ST. HELENA The Saints were defeated by Winters, 33-13, last Friday. Mason Hoburg, of the Saints, however, made a spectacular 70-yard run in the third quarter for the Saints first touchdown.

The Saints second touchdown, in the fourth quarter, was made on a pass play from Ray Torres to Harland Mor-ley. Sam Biasi, of Winters, was at the end of two touchdowns for Winters. If we put up the cash, Webb said, we are in." We, it was assumed, meant the Los Angeles group which Webb has been championing openly. The tall, bespectacled Yankee vice president makes no bones about the fact hq wants the American League to expand to the Pacific Coast. He is waging a determined battle to take major league ball to Los An geles next year, with San Francisco to follow in a year or two.

If Los Angeles were to get a major league franchise next year said Don Topping, president of the Yankee's and Webbs partner, San Francisco is a 100 to I shot to get a franchise sooner or later.
