THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1953. THE NAPA REGISTER, NAPA, CALIFORNIA. Profile: Hubert Fruehauf Is Farm, Civic Leader For more than a quarter of a century, Hubert Fruehauf has taken a leading role in Napa County agriculture, from the standpoint of both crop production and legislation. Not only has he farmed extensively and successfully every crop suitable for this area, but he has taken an active part in the farmers' legislative programs. He was one of the first to realize that farmers needed badly to pull together to achieve their aims.

Mr. Fruehauf first got into the business side of farming in a big way in 1942 when he became a member of the Production and Marketing Administration. He was chairman of PMA's machinery rationing committee all during the war, and for six years he worked with the Farm and Home Administration. In 1948 he was elected president of the Napa County Farm Bureau, and he resigned that post in 1952 to take the directorship of Region 8 of the state bureau, comprising seven north coast counties. He was one of the leaders in the fight against the Monticello Dam and pleaded his case "to keep County for agriculture" on two casions in Washington, D.

C. During his term as president of the Farm Bureau, Mr. Fruehauf was instrumental in starting a number of commodity departments, in starting the Napa County Farm Supply, at the Farm Bureau headquarters at Union Station, bringing the farm labor office into the set-up, and in securing a representative of the Federal Land Bank Co. to operate out of the Farm Bureau office. One of Mr.

Fruehauf's big projeets now is in pushing the NorthBay Barrier plan which would the section of the bay ordering Marin, Sonoma, and Napa Counties. of While remaining non-partisan in was his Farm Bureau activities, Mr. Fruehauf is a staunch Republican i in starting his political work. Supply, Born on a ranch near the Waterworks in 1891, Mr. Fruehauf is the the son of the late Xavier Fruehauf, who came to California in 1874, and of Minnie May Courtney operate who was born in the Fly District, now Carneros. His father was projeets farmer and for many years he and Frank Busch farmed the area exblock tending from Big and Little Trancas north to Soda Springs School House.

He also attended Napa Business College. His father had a contracting business and had lots of horses and he learned to drive as a youngster.

One of his early jobs was driving a six-horse team hauling Jackson's Napa Soda to the landing, electric depot and Southern Pacific depot. Also during his early years, Mr. Fruehauf worked for the big cattle barons, including the Howards and Miller Lux. The latter company owned land from border to border. Mr.

Fruehauf worked principally at the headquarters at Santa Rita. In 1914 Mr. Fruehauf took a job with Standard Portland Cement Co. driving a 30-ton Marion steam Memorial For Wrights To Be Erected In N. C.

WASHINGTON (P Two un-35 painted, sagging wooden sheds will be erected this fall at Kitty Hawk, N. in honor of the Wright brothers. The sheds, replicas of those in which Wilbur and Orville Wright worked and slept, are to be used in the re-enactment of the flights that marked the birth of powered aviation 50 years ago. But sponsors promised the National Park Service, which is responsible for the Kitty Hawk Monument, that the sheds will be demolished after the anniversary celebration if they detract from the Fruehauf's driving ability, as shown in parades throughout the area during the past four years. When Ed' Massa, Register business manager, got interested in Shetland ponies, he decided there was just one man who could handle them correctly in harness.

It was Hubert Fruehauf. In addition to his early experience driving his father's teams and those of the Napa Soda Springs, Mr. Fruehauf broke and trained horses on the Stanley ranch south of Napa and worked teams in his farming until converting to power in 1921. "It was a real experience to pick up the reins on the ponies after more than 25 years. It didn't seem as if there had been any lapse of time at all," says Mr.

Fruehauf. Driving horses, and particularly a six-horse team as he is now doing for Ed Massa, is just as complicated as it looks. Mr. Fruehauf is the husband of Lydia Tallman Fruehauf and the father of Mrs. Frances Mara of Chicago and the late Hubert Fruehauf, Jr.

He is the brother of the late Nellie and Edna Fruehauf. R. J. Griffith Is Selected As 'Key' Banker shovel. He held that position for two years and then launched his farming career.

He bought some property and leased much more and at one time, from 1938 to 1943, he farmed 5000 acres. His principal crops are hay, grain, sheep, cattle, hogs, prunes and grapes. At the present time, Mr. Fruehaut is farming his own place on Dry Creek which he purchased in 1922, a place on Salvador Ave. which he and his father bought as his first farming venture, the Buhman ranch on Redwood 1100 acres in Green Island, and 200 acres in Marin Co.

One of his biggest leased farming properties was Russ Island, which includes 3200 acres of land. The land has now been taken over by the Leslie Salt Co. This is his last year on Green Island, and Mr. Fruehauf thinks he will retire from his mass operations and just farm the 60 acres at Dry Creek, the 30 at Salvador, and the on the Buhman place. -known to Napans is Mr.

A list of the dead released early today showed their ages ranged from 19 to 24. Although he said all men aboard the 25-foot raft were believed accounted for, Cargill would not officially discount the possibility the death toll might be found even higher.
