Page 6B NKWS-HERAIJ), Panama City, Friday, Anpist 10.1973 Broncos Kick Off Against Redskins POMONA. Calif. (UPI) Denver Bronco running back Floyd Little was elated Thursday with the way the team's last summer workout had gone. Everyone agreed it was flat and stale. "Every time we look bad in practice, we kick the hell out of somebody," Little said.

The club's leading ground gainer hopes the record proves true Friday night when Denver opens its exhibition season at Washington against the Redskins. The Broncos left Pomona Thursday by charter jet for the 4 Vi-hour ride east to the nation's capital. Little and the rest of the veterans on the club still remember their pre-season opener against the Redskins last year. Washington won 41-0. Although head Coach John Ralston has said he wants to look at most of his people, there are indications he might not experiment as much as he normally would.

"Preseason games you like to use to study people, but Ralston would like to win this one," a veteran player said. "The only thing he wants to see this time is LOWES JR.SIZZLIN STEAK HOUSE SPECIALIZING IN SEAFOODS AND OPEN 11:00 A.M. Ralston said he planned to follow a different substitution program than he used against the Redskins a year ago. "The coaches have worked out kind of a unique plan that will allow us to look at some people, but still keep a rookie in among some veterans who can help him out," Ralston said. (UPI) The Pittsburgh Steelers were to hold a final drill Friday before leaving for Bloomington, where they play the Minnesota Vikings Saturday night in a pre-season game. First string quarterback Terry Bradshaw, who led the Steelers the first half of their 34-7 romp over the Baltimore Colts last Saturday, is expected to call the signals during the first half of the Vikings game. Coach Chuck Noll is expected to use quarterbacks Terry Hanratty and Joe Gilliam in the second half. However, defensive end Craig Hanneman and tackle Jon Kolb. who both are suffering. from strained ligaments, will miss this game and probably the pre-season game with the Eagles in Philadelphia next Thursday. Saturday night's game is the first pre-season action for the Vikings, although they did hold a long scrimmage with the St. Louis Cardinals in training camp last Saturday.

Detroit (UPI) The Detroit Lions announced the acquisition Wednesday of offensive tackle Mike Haggerty, claimed on waivers from the Washington Redskins. The Lions have been in the market for an established NFL tackle since starter Jim Yarbrough underwent surgery Aug. 2 for torn cartilage on his right knee. Yarbrough is expected to be out from six to eight weeks. Haggerty, a six-year veteran, started on the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line for four years until he was traded to the New England Patriot in 1971.

He stands 6-3 and weighs 245. Haggerty is the 60th player in the Lions' camp. Two other players are on the inactive list because of injuries, Yarbrough and guard Rocky Rasley. FOXBORO, Mass. (UPI) The New England Patriots Thursday sent rookie defensive lineman Bill Dulac to the Green Bay Packers in return for second-year offensive tackle Kevin Hunt.

Dulac, 6-4, 250, played his college football at Eastern Michigan. He was obtained in a trade which sent Herb Adderley to the Los Angeles Rams on July 24. Hunt, 6-5, 260. was the Packers' 19th round draft choice in 1971 out of Doane (Nebraska) College. He suffered a knee injury during his rookie training camp and missed the entire 1971 season, and served on the team's taxi squad in 1972 before earning a spot on the regular roster.

Hunt played in five games last season, including a starting assignment against the Dallas Cowboys. Patriots' Coach and General Manager Chuck Fairbanks also announced that rookie quarterback Buddy Carter and linebacker Henry Moore were placed on waivers. Both cleared waivers and have been signed to the 1973 taxi squad. West Long Branch, N.J. (UPI) After saying that it was all but certain that rover Jack Gregory will not be on hand to play against the New England Patriots at Foxboro, in a pre-season game Sunday night, New York Giants' Coach Alex Webster proceeded to announce lineup changes during his Thursday news conference.

The big switch is that Randy Johnson, who threw 15 straight pass completions against San Diego last Saturday night after opening with two misses, will play the first half at quarterback. Norm Sncad will start the second half and there still is the possibility punter-No. 3 quarterback Tom Blanchard will get a chance to throw a few passes. Vin Clements will remain the startihg fullback with rookies Clifton Davis and Jack Rizzo behind him. But Ron Johnson, who sat out the entire San Diego game, may do that again in spite of the Giants' next exhibition being against the New York Jets.

Joe Orduna will get the call at fullback over Rocky Thompson. If Johnson does see action it won't be for longer than one or two series. On Gregory said: "We told Jack to stay with his family at Jackson (Miss.) until everything is straightened out. It looks as if he won't be back for this game." Gregory's wife gave birth to a premature son last weekend. Gregory, the front four will have Dan Goicli, John Mendenhall, rookie Bill Wideman and Carter Campbell, from left to right.

Rich Glover, the lone sub available, will take Mendenhall'sspotif used. Henry Reed is too weak from his recent illness (blood infection) to play. NORMAL, III. (UPI) The St. Louis football Cardinals Thursday placed free agent kicker Duane Carrell on waivers for the purpose of releasing him from the roster.

Garrett Eyes Double 1,000 RENSSELAER, Ind. (UPI) running backs in professional football would be satisfied to gain 1,000 yards on the ground. Not Carl Garrett, newly acquired by the Chicago Bears.

His personal goal this year is to gain 1,000 yards rushing and add another 1,000 on pass receptions. "I guess every runner wants to gain 1,000 yards," he said. "I've been in the game four years and 1,000 yards has eluded me. My goal is not only to gain 1,000 rushing but also to catch enough balls to have 1,000 too. I think I'll be satisfied with that." Garrett, who was a 3rd round draft choice of the New England Patriots in 1969, believed his goal was well within reason.

"I've definitely got a chance to do both in this offense," he said. "Just as long as we have a quarterback and two backs, our offence will move. The swing and screen passes are set up equally for the fullback and myself, so a team can't overstack. to one side or the other to try to shut off the pass because both of us coming out of the backfield can catch it." Garrett could be the answer to the Bears' season-long problem of 1972, lack of a tested long gainer. His long gain, both rushing and passing, with New England was 80 yards and he boasted a long gain of 63 yards on kickoff returns and 62 on punt returns, thereby adding to his versatility for the Bears.

"I'm happy here," Garrett said, in contrast to his publicized unhappiness in New England. Bob Allison Cops Pole TALLADEGA, Ala. (UPI) Guiding his Chevrolet at 187.064 miles per hour around the Alabama International Motor Speedway Thursday, Bobby Allison of Hueytown captured the pole position for Sunday's 5th annual Talladega 500 stock car race. David Pearson of Spartanburg, S. still favored to win Sunday's race, grabbed the second position in his Mercury after touring the tri-oval trrick at 185.862 MPH.

Pearson has won nine of his last 10 races and is nearing the $1 million mark in career earnings. Behind Pearson will be Richard Petty, Randloman, S. Bobby Isaac, Catawba, N. and Donny Allison of Hueytown. Thirty two drivers competed Thursday for the first 20 positions in the 50 car field.

Positions 21-40 will be filled Friday and the final round of qualifying for the last 10 spots will be held Saturday. S3 STARMASTER STEEL 35,000 Ml GUARANTEE Two Slrong Slpel Bollr.
