Wickenheiser, Columbia, and Edward T. Kirchner, North Miami, Fla. Developer to Appeal Case Lloyd H. Miller, Mount Joy R1 developer who defended himself in court on theft charges last Wednesday, has obtained a lawyer and is appealing his conviction, a court spokesman said Friday. Miller has retained Columbia attorney Donald Nikolaus as his counsel, the spokesman said, and motions for a new trial have been filed.

The case is expected to be heard during the December session of Argument Court. FOUND GUILTY Miller was found guilty last week of burglary and larceny and larceny. He had been charged with stealing a tool box and personal items from a Marietta apartment he rented to tenants. The tiems allegedly belonged to the tenants. In choosing to defend himself, Miller disregarded advice by Judge Wilson Bucher that he retain an attorney to defend him.

Judge Bucher advised Miller to "get a lawyer" both before the trial began and after the defendant was found guilty. How to combat crime, particularly juvenile crime, continues to be a puzzling topic all over the country. Perhaps it is time to take an altogether different approach; to attack the problem before it starts. Everyone agrees, for example, school children are impressionable. In the same manner that school children are taken museums, zoos, perhaps it would help to periodically take classes of children on guided tours through county jails, State and Federal penitentiaries.

Let them see first hand how the liberty and freedom of convicts are restricted. Let talented dramatists explain the cost of crime, NOT to society, but the criminal; how his cost can be life-long. Let it be emotionally told how ex-cons are branded. Jobs are scarce, hard to find for them even good times. Almost professions are denied them; licenses to perform in many skills and trades are refused them.

Let it be told the way it is. Harshly. After all, if youngsters of age 18 are considered smart enough to vote, surely they should be smart enough at that or an earlier age to want to stay out of jail for their own good CHARLES F. SNYDER, CHARLES F. SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 414 E.
