KEEPS CARDS UP BY 1 'A 12 LANCASTER, NEW ERA SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 1974 IT fit Ym 'Hr tom of the 12th was Johnny Bench, maybe the biggest cog in the Big Red Machine. ATIONA "I think were profiting from all those mistakes we made earlier this season, added Pittsburghs Willie Stargell. "We feel good coming out on field now. Were doing things well. Aslrot 8, Expos 3 Doug Rader drove in four runs with a homer and a single to lead Houston to victory.

Raders RBI single keyed a three-run outburst in the fourth -inning, while his three-run homer capped the scoring in the eighth. Milt May drove in two runs with a first-inning single for the Astros. Cubs 4, Padres 1 Relief pitcher Tom Dettore belted a two-run double in the sixth inning and hurled 6 1-3 innings of three-hit relief to lead the Cubs past San Diego. Jose Cardenal slugged his ninth homer of the season for the Cubs in the first inning. after walking George Foster, he retired Cesar Geronimo on a grounder to the mound for the final out.

"That last grounder felt like a hand grenade with the pin said an obviously relieved McGraw. "I couldnt wait to get rid of it and get the game over with." The victory was the Mets fourth in a row, while Cincinnati missed an opportunity to close in on first-place Los Angeles, which remained 4 Vi games in front in the NL West. Pirates 5, Dodgers 2 Dock Ellis fired a five-hitter for the Pirates, posting his sixth consecutive victory and handing the Dodgers their fourth straight loss. It was Pittsburgh's 23rd win in the last 33 games, and at least a couple of the Pirates feel the team is finally moving. "Its for real this, time, I can feel it," said Pirate outfielder A1 Oliver, who had three hits and scored three times.

Bench laced a McGraw curve to the wall in left field, the ball hitting just below the yellow home run line. Bench wound up on second with a double, and McGraw, considerably shaken, heaved a sigh of relief. I threw my $90,000 curve, and he hit his $180,000 line drive, McGraw said with a. smile afterwards. I have all the respect in the world for Johnny Bench.

The way he hits off me, the least he can do is invite. me to his restaurant for a dinner on the house." Next up was Darrel Chaney. He tried to bunt Bench along, but McGraw fielded the ball, spun and fired to third in time for the out. That proved to be the key play, as McGraw got Dave Concepcion to pop out for the second out of the inning. Then, AS WHITE SOX GAIN SPLIT Uahiraseini Stops Yanks By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS When Joe Torre stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the ninth inning Friday night, he was happy not to see a familiar face.

Torre, who had been struck out by John DAcquisto in each of his previous three times at bat, laced a two-run single off San Francisco reliever Elias Sosa to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 2-1 victory over the Giants. "Just getting up and not having to face that other guy (DAcquisto) felt good, said Torre, whose single to left kept the first-place Cards lVa games in front of Philadelphia in the tight National League East. Torre had no doubts about his game-winning hit. 1 didnt have to say Excuse me when I swung, he said.

"I felt when I hit it that it would go through, and it did. HAD TWO HITTER DAcquisto, 9-11, handcuffed the Cards on just two hits over the first eight innings, but pinch-hitter Jim Dwyer walked to open the ninth and Lou Brock singled him to third, bringing on Sosa. Brock promptly stole second for his 81st theft of the season. After Ted Sizemore flied out, Reggie Smith was intentionally walked, setting the stage for Torres single. Bob Gibson, 7-10, got the victory, allowing nine hits, including a solo homer by Chris Speier in the eighth.

According to Cards catcher Ted Simmons, Gibson was pitching despite a painful knee injury. NO DISCUSSION "He doesnt tell people how bad his knee hurts, but you just know it does, said Simmons. "Its not something you talk about, because you dont like to have to compensate. I dont even like to think about how hes hurting. DAcquisto, a hard-throwing, 22-year-old right-hander, was impressive in defeat.

"Ive never seen anybody throw better than him this year, said Cards Manager Red Schoendienst. He had a great fastball, agreed Gibson. He was great. Met 2, Reds 1 Rusty Staub singled home Bud Harrelson in the top of the 12th to put the Mets in front 2-1. It was then up to New York relief ace Tug McGraw to keep things that way.

But Chicago clawed its way back as Jorge Orta ripped five hits including a pair of home runs and Ken Henderson also homered. AMERICA By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS It has often been written of baseball that the game's not finished until the last man is out. Neither, it seems, is a kayoed starting pitcher.

And if you dont believe that little piece of diamond philosophy, just ask Chuck Tanner, manager of the Chicago White Sox. He knows all about it. Tanner saw the Sox split a doubleheader with the New York Yankees Friday night in rather remarkable fashion. Chicago lost the first game 9-8 when Thurman Munson hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning. Then Stan Bahnsen, knocked out in the second inning of the opener, came back to win the nightcap with 4 2-3 innings of solid relief as Chicago gained the split, 4-2.

STRANGE HAPPENINGS More than 7 hours of baseball at Shea Stadium began and ended with Bahnsen pitching for the White Sox. In between, some strange things happened. His ex-Yankee teammates teed off on Bahnsen for seven hits and five runs in 1 1-3 in- Jim Spencer followed with double and Tommy Smith hobbled the ball, allowing Hargrove to score from first. Bosman then retired the next two batters as Spencer advanced to third. Joe Lovitto was intentionally walked.

Jim Sundberg followed with a bunt single, scoring Spencer. Dave Nelson singled to score Lovitto. Sundberg scored on Cesar Tovars double. Then Burroughs tagged his homer. Angels 7, Brewers 3 California defeated Milwaukee as Nolan Ryan struck out nine batters, running 1 his season total to 269 in his attempt to become the first pitcher in history to strike out 300 or more batters in three straight seasons.

The Angels bunched five runs in the third inning, two of them on a bases-loaded double by Frank Robinson, and added two more in the eighth on Bob Oliver's home run. Ken Sanders relieved in the eighth inning and saved Ryan's 16th victory of the season. Tigers 5, A's 3 Jim Nettles ripped a three-run homer and Bill Freehan added a solo shot as Detroit came from behind with four runs in the seventh inning to overtake Oakland. Oakland's Jim Hunter, 17-10, was working on a one-hitter before the Detroit comeback. Mickey Lolich, 14-14, got the victory.

BEST36 HOLES OF SEASON Stockton's 12-Under Leads Hartford Open Three records were set last evening on the first day of the 13th annual Lancaster City-County Swim Meet at Lancaster County Pool. Ephratas 17-and-under girls 200-meter freestyle relay team (Camille Widder, Bobbie Royer, Karen Beard and Kelly Lightner) won in 1:57.6 for a new record. They held the old standard set last year. Golden Meadows 14-and-under boys set a record in the same event.

Mark Womeldorf, Angus Grant, Jon Perezous and Chuck Gaul won in 1:52.7, breaking the Brookside record set in 1970. Finally, the Skyline 17-and-under boys 200-meter freestyle relay team (John Booske, Jeff Passe, Craig Herr and Jim Werst) set a new mark of 1 44.7. Skyline set the old record last year. Ortas second homer tied the game and then consecutive balks called against rookie Tippy Martinez and an error by catcher Rick Dempsey helped the White Sox to two runs in the top of the eighth and a 7-5 lead. But Dempsey made up for his error with a two-run double that tied it up again. By the time the 13th inning rolled around, Dick Allen, who missed Ihe start of the game because of an upset stomach, was in the lineup for Chicago and hit his 32nd home run. That seemed to settle the issue. Reliever Terry Forster retired the first two Yankees in the bottom of the 13th.

But then Bobby Murcer singled and Munson exploded his gameturning homer. HARD HIT "I knew it was going, said Munson. "Thats about as hard as I can hit a baseball." "He had to be looking for it, said Forster. "I was throwing good and it was a good pitch." In the nightcap, Chicago scored all of its runs in the fourth inning with Bill Melton and Bill Sharp hitting consecutive home runs. When the Yankees threatened in the fifth, who should appear out of the bullpen but Bahnsen.

This time, the veteran righthander went 4 2-3 innings, limiting New York to two hits and getting the victory. Red Sox 3, Twins 2 Boston pushed across a ninthinning run on Juan Beniquez bases-loaded single to shade Minnesota. Rick Burlesons double sandwiched around walks to Doug Griffin and Rick Miller set the stage for Beniquez winning hit. The Twins had tied the game in the ninth inning when Bobby Darwin opened with a double, moved to third on a long fly and scored on Glenn Borgmann's single. Veteran Juan Marichal started for Boston and limited Minnesota to one run until the seventh inning.

The 35-year-old right-hander fanned two, raising his strikeout total to 2,301 and becoming only the 16th pitcher in history to reach 2,300. Rangers 7, Indians 3 Texas scored seven unearned runs in the seventh inning, three of them on a homer by Jeff Burroughs, and walloped Cleveland. Burroughs homer was his 23rd of the season as the Rangers wiped out a 1-0 lead that Dick Bosman had protected into the seventh. Ironically, it was Bosnian's own error that opened the gates for the Rangers barrage. Bosman dropped a throw while covering first, allowing leadoff batter Mike Hargrove to reach base in the seventh.

(AP) I have a good attitude," Dave Stockton said, trying to explain his recordsetting lead midway through the $200,000 Sammy Davis Hartford Open Golf Tournament. Thats what golf is all about, really," he said. "Attitude. Im having a great time. Its a lot more fun to walk along and laugh and talk with people than to trudge down the fairway with your head down looking at the worms.

Stockton, who presents a happy face to the world in most circumstances, is positively gleeful now. His putter is the reason.
