Sport Shorts By JACK CUDDY President 'Roosevelt's 1945 okay to baseball was the most important sports pronouncement since Pearl Harbor. It was far more sig. nificant than his experimental "green light" of 1942. F.D.R. gave a reassuring go ahead to the diamond game just when the nation is approaching its peak in fighting, production and casualties.

He gave it when Congress is wrestling with the manpower problem. He gave it when the country is still adjusting itself to the drastic curfew, and when the turf world is still hoping for a removal of the racing ban. The combination of these various conditions produced a situation of such gravity that you can bet your last buck the president's okay followed thorough investigation and long deliberation. You can bet also that if he were not completely convinced that baseball had proved its wartime worth, yesterday's words never would have been spoken, and the national pastime would have gone the way of racing and late-night entertainment, It was too touchy a problem to kiss off with spur-of-the-moment pleasantries. Mr.

Roosevelt is not a loose man with words. It is our belief that he chose the words "perfectly healthy" to serve as a red light for over-zealous draft boards and examiners, who, during the past couple of months have been inducting into service players previously classified as 4-F. Because of this apparent discrimination against 4-F players, the major leagues were losing so many seasoned performers that some owners were becoming genuinely worried about being able to puc worthwhile teams on the field. Play Ball! American League To Open April 16th Chicago, March American League today released a 1945 schedule calling for nearly 6,500 miles more team travel and 19 more trips than last year. After being discarded for a year, the schedule returns to the usual custom of having the season open in Washington with a single game on April 16 with the other clubs jumping off the following day.

As is the past, with the exception of 1944, New York again will go to the capital for the opener with a possibility that President Roosevelt will throw out the first ball. The Yankees will return to New York to open the season the next day against the Boston Red Soxthus adding 650 team miles to the 1945 travel schedule which were eliminated last year. In the other openers April 17, Chicago will be at Cleveland, Washington at Philadelphia, and Detroit at St. Louis. In the secondary openers, April 20, St.

Louis will be at Chicago, Cleveland at Detroit and Philadelphia at Boston. The 154-game schedule will close on Sept. 30. $500,000 at Stake In Basketball Bets New York, March of the most concerted municipal drives against gambling on record didn't stop the betting merchants along Broadway today from posting the usual odds on favorites for the National Invitational Basketball Tournament. The down-to-earth National Syndicate operators, who aren't interested in sentiment or past.

performances, overlooked defending champion St. John's and installed the great Depaul Blue Demons of Chicago as even money favorites to win the tournament. Although the first round games won't be played until Saturday night, there already is a record flow of money on the basis of advance odds. One close associate of the syndicate estimated that more than $500,000 would be bet in the metropolitan area alone on the opening contests. Chelini's Arm Okay Boyes Springs, March 14- (UP) -Italo Chelini, Oakland Oaks' hurler who left baseball in 1943 when he suffered a double arm fracture, is now in fine shape and may pitch against the McClellan Field nine next Sunday, Trainer Jesse Adams said Chelini's arm has not developed single ache or pain and he seems to have all of his old stuff." The Oaks battle the Hamilton Field Fliers today with veteran Sam Gibson on the mound.

The Fliers, led by Joe Gordon and Joe Marty, defeated the Oaks 7 to 2 last Sunday. Newcomer, 17, Praised Frederick, March 14-(UP) Reidy, one of the 'teen-aged chance youngsters getting his big in the major leagues this season, drew praise today from the Philadelphia Athleitcs' batsmen who tried without success to hit his fast ball. The six-foot, three-inch 17-yearold kid from St. Louis took advantage of balmy weather to cut loose with his fast ball. In addition to blazing speed, his pitches dipped sharply away at the plate.
