Company 237th Military Police Battalion at Ft. William and Mary becomes Service Battery, New Castle.

Both units will be part of the reactivated 172nd Field Artillery Group based at Manchester and commanded by Col. Thomas H. Burns Jr. Col. Burns commanded the 195th Infantry Regimental Combat Team under the old setup.

Reactivation of the 172nd Field Artillery will bring back pre-war memories for many. It was this unit which was federalized and saw duty during World War II. Brig. Gen. John Jacobson adjutant for the New Hampshire National Guard, commanded the old 172nd when it left Manchester for active duty in World War II.

ff The 141st Engineer Combat Company now becomes the 148th Field Artillery Group and will be commanded by Lt. Col. Bolislaw H. Pokigo of Goffstown. Its headquarters will be in Nashua.

The two new artillery groups will be equipped with 105 howitzers and eight-inch howitzers. The Portsmouth units will h-avc 105 self-propelled howitzers. The guard was switched to infantry and engineers in 1947 when it was reorganized. Jacobson said that under the new setup the 172nd wilt have three battalions and the 148th two. The conversion will result in no reduction of organized units, he said.

Col. Burns left with the 172nd in World War II and wound up his service as a lieutenant colonel with the 70th Division Artillery. Lt. Col. Pokigo also served with the 172nd and was operations officer for the 751st Field Artillery Battalion.

The unit conversion plan of the 172nd Field Artillery Group and its battalion commanders are as follows: Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 195th Infantry Regiment to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, Manchester.
