Friday was the last day of work for more than 40 employees at Katy Memorial Hospital and for the few remaining employees at a clothes manufacturing plant that once employed 400 people. The closings both were due to lack of demand for services, officials said. "I've been here 20 years and I really have no idea what I'll do.

We have a lot of skilled people who've been out here a long time and now they don't have a job," said Leon Stout, plant manager of Fred Ronald Manufacturing which made girls and women's clothing. The company employed about 120 people just six weeks ago, but Stout said the firm had laid off employees each week since then, hoping that business would turn around and those people could be hired back. "It just didn't come together for us. he said. didn't get the contract work we needed." Production was stopped for several weeks last year when the firm filed for a Chapter 11 reorganization in federal bankruptcy court.

"We needed some strong contracts to provide work to keep the plant going," Stout said. "We just didn't get the contracts, and the economy wasn't there to keep the plant The firm began operations in Parsons in 1954 and at one time had 400 employees. At Katy Mernorial Hospital, most of the approximately 46 employees who put in their final day Friday were nurses at the 45-bed hospital who have not found new jobs, said Administrator Les Hammett. Charlie Foreman, a member of the hospital's board of trustees, said the decision in November to close the hospital was made because the patient load had decreased dramatically. Hammett said only nine employees will remain to operate the Katy Clinic.

X-ray department, lab and pharmacy. Hospital employees received word of the closing in late November. Negotiations to sell the hospital are continuing with three potential buyers, including the 109-bed Labette County Medical Center, Hammett said. The other interested parties are corporations in the hospital business. BREVITIES Parisoff's Market will be open from 9-6 on Easter Sunday.
