Dummy play is generally considered more interesting than defensive play, but there are many hands where the defense also geU a chance to shine.

Here is one played many years ago (1948) in Holland, with Martyn Cats West and Herman Filarski East. Declarer won the heart lead with the queen and finessed the ten of spades, losing to the queen. Filarski returned a heart to the ace, and, when declarer played another spado to the Jack, Eaat permitted It to wdn. South now led a diamond from dummy, Filarski making the proper play of the queen. Hophtg that WtaA had another spade, South led the seven, but Cats showed out and Filarski cashed the A-9. Eaat returned the deuce of diamonds, Ots wisely permitting declarer to win it with the jack. When South then cashed the kiiyp of hearts, this became the pomtion: North 4AK JS gaat 4Q109I Weat u. South 9 3 47 At this point South had six tricks and needed three more. He led the seven of clubs.

If Cats had covered the seven with the eight, declarer would have made the contract by taking the ace and returning a low- club. But Cata played the four instead. Sensing the actual situation, declarer went up with the ace, hoping to endplay East by continuing with the three. But Filarski countered this plan by dropping the ten on the ace and there was then nothing declarer could do to make the contract. If he cashed the king of clubs, East would take the last two tricks, while If he played the three instead, West would win it with the eight to put South down two.

Almanac For Today HOLL'YWOOD (UPI) -Would you believe a show with the title "Mary Martin at time with the Radio City Music Hall?" I I mean, if ever a program pleaded in advance, via its name, to be accepted as square and safe, Sunday night hour did. i Actually, things could have been different. It if been for a little trouble over labor jurisdictions, which prevented the show from being shot in the Music Hall, and if it been for the huge mounting costs, and the worry of finding a sponsor to carry them, the title have reflected less fear over acceptance. An earlier title, for instance, was the zippy Martin Presents Easter at Radio City Music Originally it was scheduled for 90 minutes, apparently to make certain the entire name got in. Anyway, Sunday show was a very high level bore, the perfect program for the tired business woman, almost as deadly in its sincerity as NBC- series In fact, it was in about the; same category.

There wraa a pleasant turn by that all-around performer, Paul: Hartman, who was seen as a magician, with Miss Martin as his assistant. And of course the Music Hall Rockettes are always good for a gander. But the remainder of the hour suffered from that run-down feeling, and displayed absolutely no sign of the contemporary world. When Miss Martin sang and danced, she was naturally very much the accomplished professional, and if she is precisely your cup of tea, then so much the better. However, in delivering most of her lines, she came across so much as Mary Martin, the public institution, that I am afraid she turned me off too severely ever to be turned on again wholly during the hour.

One of the great secrets of the longtime successes of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, who most definitely rank among the topmost performing public institutions, is that they do not seem to be self-conscious about their prominence before an audience. Sunday night, however. Martin's words seemed to reflect an unnerving touch of cuteness, of patronizing, of condescension, almost as arch in their overall effect as the efforts of Helen Hayes to civilize the audiences who are given the overwhelming privilege of seeing her perform. What the hour proved. In sum, is that video entertainment continues, to generally misread the significant audience of the mid-1960s.

Ted Yates, whose NBC-TV documentaries are almost always worth making time for, came up with another Sunday evening, Congo: Victim of The hour-long program went over the well known problems in Africa but in an outstanding pictorial manner that was bolstered by the bite of a good script. Particularly memorable was the sequence of a wbite being welcomed back warmly by natives whose village had declined economically after he left.
