LAWRENCE, FINE TAILORING, The Argus Angnsla correspondent writes the following: Tbe Republicans of York county are deep in themnd astl-eir brethren Cumberland are in the mire. It seezra that Charles L. Favor came down here from York county to secure a position in tbe Senate as doorkeeper. He was backed for tbe position by ex-Senator; Horace Mitchell and opposed by Juitin Leavitt and Charles H. Prescott, who ere here snpp-rting Stephen Lord of Lebanon.

Favor had to go ontside his own county, apparently, for senator ial biipport as he was presented ty the caucus by' Witbam of Cumberland and seconded by Grindie of Hanccck. In this connection it may be said that the machine was dowcel by two votes. The plaintive wail of tbe machine men is tbat i Mitchell is responsible for tbe indepen-1 dent candidacy of Thomas F. Staples in tbe Eliot class, after tbe latter Lad been declared in the caucus by Keefo. Acd therefore there is much wailing and gnashing of teeth, and tbe contest will therefore be fought with energy and vim.

Keefe must have a pretty good notion that he will be seated a member of the House, for his biography appears in Howard Owen's "Obit" book, which has just been issued for tbe 17th time. In this book it is stated tbat Francis Keefe resides at "Greenacre-on-thc- Piscataqua." It is a pretty place and EO Mr. Keefe feels tbat be can better represent the vicinity of the navy yard than can Mr Staples. Mr Keefe is an electrical engineer and before lie was twenty-one years old became a torpedo expert un der the instruction of tbe late Professor Farmer. At an early age he was sent on an important mission to tbe government of China, later he spent nearly three yesrs in Butsia where he built ten torpedo boats for tbe government of the Czar and instructed the officers of tbe imperial navy in tbe use of torpedoes.

Subsequently be occupied a iimiliar, position ia Turkey under tbe Sultan's government and afterwards positions in Belgium and England. On bis final return to this country he renewed his work with Professor Farmer and continued to be both hand and bead to that distinguished man to tbe time of bis death. Mr. Keele has fur quite a number of years been an active and public-spirited citizen of the town of Eliot, where he lias held various offices to his satisfaction of all classes. From this distance it looks as if his desire to sit in the Maine House will be gratified before the session ends.

Captain Sigsbee of tbe martyr ship Maine pays a fine tribute iu the January Century to the honesty and straightforwardness of the American newspaper correspondents stationed at Havana after the blowing up of the battleship and previous to the breaking out of war He gays: '-If, occasionally, one showed lack of taste, tbe majority, from our point of view, did not. Tbe people of the United States demanded tbe news, and they got it.

Very early, I applied a certain rule of conduct to these gen- t'eman, and it worked to perfection- extended to American correspondent in Havana. WANTS TO SEE IT GO EDITOR PORTSMOUTH read with much pleasure your suggestion that the yearly junket to the City farm go the of the slavery law. There are from one years end to the other masy such little ways in which the city's money is frittered away. The tax rate this coming year will be higher than ever and as an excuse I have read that one of the principal causes is the war which left many soldier's wives homo destitute to be cared for by the city.

This is not the cause. It is tbe placing in office of unwise, unscrupulous men who are for themselves first, last and at nil times, the public be-well I did not it I am a republican and will always be that or nothing but I would like to have something to say about where my money goes to. Bev. J. E. Bobbins of Dover, former ly a well-known pastor in this city, is a candidate for the position of chaplain of tho house of representatives. He has many friends here, who will wish him success and his election is prophe- sizod by a number of lr adore.

Captain Sigsbee thus gives, unconsciously perhaps, the reason for this harmony between him and the corps of writers at Havana. He says: "I never impugned their motives, nor denied myself to them when it was possible to see them. I never misled them, nor gave any one correspondent the 'start in If I had news that could properly be given, I gave it. If what I knew could not be given, I so informed them frankly." And all this moves mo to say that my experience of the past seven years, under a dozen different editors, has convinced me that a man is usually treated fairly by the newspaper boys if he treats them likewise. Too many people think that a newspaper office is a dumping grouad for all the discourteous growls they choose to heap upon the heads of editor and reporter.

I have learned that as a rule, the fellow who helps make newspapers is quite as respectable as the men and women with whom he comes in contact daily. If you stride into an oflice as if in- iending to throw everybody out aad run the paper to suit yourself, you need never expect a very respectful hearing-- theu or thereafter, for the newspaper man has a good memory. If, however, your request be courteous, yon will be favored. I often hear folks "kicking" against the "stuff" in tbe papers. If the papers should publish everything they know, yon'd see an xip- heaval in churches, families, politics and society that would put old Vesuvius to shame.

There is scarcely an editor in this country but holds back eveiy day very interesting stories which, if printed, would wreak great injury upon reputations and records. Nine times in ten, it is a narrow-minded person who gets into a mix-up with newspaper men. People of broad and sympathetic views, like Captain Sigsbee, never have any trouble of the sort, In SiUem, this morning aughter of George and Ella (Ham) llutcbrason, aged 9 years.
