SPORTS EDITOR Shorts on Sports down pass of the day with 6 :33 remaining on a 10-yard swing pass to halfback Jim Freeman and later hit Colosimo with a short pass that the fullback turned into a 45-yard touchdown. Temple Blasts Akron MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) Defensive back Jo Jo Heath returned ah intercepted pass 46 yards to set up Freddy Jacob's short-range touchdown midway' through the fourth quarter Saturday as 12th ranked Pitt held on to defeat rival West Virginia 24-17. Playing before the largest crowd in West Virginia history, the Panthers twice built seemingly insurmountable leads only to see the underdog Mountaineers, 5-5, battle back.

East The Owls got their third score after defensive tackle Guy Peters sacked Akron quarterback Bob Maxwell, who fumbled. Peters recovered at the Akron eight and Broomell hit Wiley Pitts with a seven-yard scoring pass on third down. All of Akrons points came off the toe of Andy Graham, who kicked field goals from 49 and 44 yards out. Akron halfback Paul Winters became the Zips all-time single season rusher with 83 yards on 22 carries for a career total of 1,098 yards. He surpasses Jack Beidleman, who had 1,050 in 1969.

The win gives Temple an 8-1 record. Akron is 5-5. PHILADELPHIA (AP) Temple quarterback Brian Broomell ran for one score and passed for two others in the first half as the Owls blasted Akron 42-6 in college football Saturday. Bromell, a senior, set up Temple's first touchdown when he rambled 17 yards on an option play to the Akron 14. He fumbled the ball forward when hit and Owl running back Kevin Duckett outraced the Zips defense to recover in the end zone for a touchdown.

On their next possession the Owls marched 63 yards in seven plays, the score coming when Broomell rolled left and went over untouched from the six. TRACK One of the sports celebs at the recent bash at the opening of the Bally casino in Atlantic City where all the fuss started about Willie Mays working for a gambling casino was Barney Ewell. Barney, who took his wife, said, We got to meet all the big shots. Everything was on the house, except the casino, we weren't allowed in there. I had met most of the athletes before, but one I hadnt, the one I got the biggest kick out of meeting, was Floyd Patterson.

There was a nostalgic story in a recent Dartmouth football program recalling the game in 1940. That year Dartmouth was coached by Earl Blaik, by A1 Holman. The Diplomats, led by quarterback Bill Manotti, halfback Johnny Quick, Warren Hamsher, Bill Farkas and Stan Holmes won it, 23-21. A small note at the end of the story explains, It is only a coincidence that the editor of the Dartmouth football programs spent four years in the early seventies as director of publications at Franklin and Marshall. That, of course, is Art Petromosolo.

Hes the fellow who, among other things, designed the logo on the football helmets. BASKETBALL Coniel Norman, who scorched 27.5 points a game for the Lancaster Red Roses in 1977-78, and played for the San Diego Clippers last year, was cut by the Clippers and will be returning to the Roses Brad Davis, the spunky little guard from western Pa. who starred at Maryland, and was a first round draft choice of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1977, will also be playing in the Continental Basketball Association this season. He recently joined the Anchorage Northern Knights. The game, the final one at West Virginias 55-year-old Mountaineer Field, drew a crowd of 38,681.

The largest previous crowd in the stadium, which has a listed capacity of 34,000, was 38,500 for the 1971 Pitt game. Jacobs four-yard touchdown run with 9:12 left in the game came just a minute after West Virginia had cut Pitts lead to 17-10 on a 19-yard touchdown pass play from Oliver Luck to Cedric Thomas. West Virginia began the drive on its own 20. Pitt, 8-1, playing before scouts from four bowl games, had built a 17-3 lead early in the fourth quarter behind the passing of freshman quarterback Dan Marino. Starting for just the second time in his college career, Marino threw an eight-yard touchdwon pass to Benjie Pryor with 50 seconds gone in the final quarter.

The touchdown ended an 11-play, 76-yard drive highlighted by Marino completions of 24 yards to Ralph Still and 17 yards to Pryor. Before a 22-yard field goal by West Virginia 's Steve Sinclair early in the second half, Pitt had taken a IDO halftime lead as Marino consistently threaded passes through the Mountaineer's secondary. Heaths second interception of the second half, with just 14 seconds left in the game, ended West Virginia's final upset hopes. 20-2 homecoming victory over Bucknell Saturday in college football. After a scoreless first half, Colosimo ran for a 56-yard touchdown with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter after gathering in a screen pass from Marzo.

Colosimos score came after a sparkling interception from Colgate safety John Kramer, one of three Kramer recorded on the afternoon. Shortly into the fourth quarter, the Bi-sons put their two points on the scoreboard when a snap went over the head of Colgate punter Ivor Brown and through the endzone fora safety. Marzo completed his second touch- mingham, Alabama. Dorns 14-yard touchdown scamper was the only scoring in the first quarter, and sent the Cadets on their way to their seventh straight game without a victory. Army has lost six and tied one after opening the season with victories over Connecticut and Stanford.

Colgate 20, Bucknell 2 HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) Senior quarterback John Marzo passed for 249 yards and three touchdowns two to fullback Angelo Colosimo to give Colgate a Yale 35, Princeton 10 PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) Quarterback Dennis Dunn ran for one score and passed for another as Yale clinched at least a tie for the Ivy League title by beating Princeton, 35-10. Yale's key score came in the third quarter, when Dunn threw an 8-yard, fourth-down touchdown strike to Mike McIntyre. The Bulldogs, up 7-2 at halftime, shut down Princeton by holding the ball for 12:22 of the third quarter.

Senior tailback Ken Hill scampered down the sideline 64 yards with 4:57 gone in the first quarter to put Yale on the score-board. Hill, who had 129 yards on 19 carries, pasesd former Yale and National Football League star Calvin Hill into seventh place on Yale's all-time top rushing list. The Tigers, 4-2 in Ivy play, 4-4 overall, in their first real shot at the league title since 1969, scored their only points on defense. Chris Boudreau intercepted a pass and ran 92 yards for a fourth-quarter score, and the Tigers added a second-period safety- Yale added a fumble recovery and an interception, both for touciidowns, to put the game away in the fourth quarter. Yale, 6-0 in the Ivy, 8-0 overall, recorded its 13th straight victory over Princeton.

Delaware 51, Yngstwn 45 YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) Running backs Gino Olivieri and Lou Mariani combined for 253 yards rushing and three touchdowns to pace Delaware past previously unbeaten Youngstown State 51-45 in a battle of NCAA Division II college football powers Saturday. Delaware trailed 31-7 at halftime but exploded for 28 third-quarter points to grab the lead. Delaware then prevailed in a seesaw fourth quarter, with the Blue Hens Ed Wood rambling 6 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 24 seconds to play. Delawares defense tackled a Youngstown player in the end zone for a safety which finished the scoring. Olivieri had 128 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while Mariani added 125 yards and a 49-vard touchdown run.

Quarterback Scott Brunner also scored twice for the Blue Hens. PIAA The judge in western Pennsylvania who ruled that Penn Hills would not have to forfeit three football games for using an ineligible player was dead wrong. PIAA rules clearly state that a team using an ineligible player must forfeit its games. The PIAA rule is perfectly clear. What a precedent the judge sets when he rules, By applying their standards rigorously, without regard to mitigating circumstances, the PIAA is unreasonably denying the participating student, and the entire innocent team from participating fully in all of the educational activities and facilities for which each can qualify in accordance with their individual talents and abilities.

Let's not confuse the issue with a lot of words. If the player was ineligible, and the school admits he was, the team must forfeit. The PLAA, correctly, says it will appeal. If it loses the case, can you imagine the number of disgruntled fans, schools, coaches, players and parents who will try to sue PIAA. SOCCER The goalie for the Elizabethtown College soccer team is Tim Riley.

The last name should be familiar to sports page readers of the 60s. Tims father is Jim Riley, who was sports editor of the Intell Journal from 1961 to 1967. The Rileys left Lancaster and returned to Stroudsburg where Jim was editor of the Pocono Record until he was forced to resign because of illness. Tim is a senior at E-town with a major in elementary education. He helped lead the Blue Jays to the playoffs with 67 saves this season.

Jim managed to get down and see Tim play several games for the Jays. FOOTBALL From Jim Riley to Jim Wiley. The son of an ex-McCaskey High student, Jim Wiley, is a starting tackle on Gettysburg High Schools undefeated football team. Jim and his wife, the formerly Sylvia Binkele, graduated from McCaskey in the mid-50s. Jim Jr.

is a senior at Gettysburg and has helped the Bullets win ten. straight games and the Blue Mountain League championship. BASEBALL The $20 million improvement package proposed for Baltimores Memorial Stadium includes Prescription Athletic Turf (the kind they have in Miami's Orange Bowl and RFK Stadium in Washington), 10,000 more seats, new locker rooms, renovated press boxes, a club-type res-tuarant, mezzanine sky-boxes and, possibly, lowering the field. BASKETBALL The best shooting percentage on the Seattle Supersonics belongs tt Wally Walker. Walker is shooting at a .526 dip, 20 for 38 from the field.

Hes averaging 5.4 a game for eight games. The starter with the highest percentage is forward Lonnie Shelton at .516 (64 of 124). Shelton is averaging 12.6 a game. GOLF Dave Collingwood, golf director at Overlook who played well in local tournaments this summer, has embarked for Florida where he will play on the minitour the next two months. Collingwood will compete in four tourneys this month, and five in December.

The November tourneys will be played at Jonathans Landing in Jupiter, Mayacoo in West Palm Beach, and two on the Boca Raton West Number One course. In December, he will play two on the Boca Raton West Number Two course, at Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in West Palm Beach, at Indian Spring Country Club in Boynton Beach, and at Jonathan's Landing in Jupiter. It all goes well, Collingwood may stay fora January, February, March tour. HORSE RACING-Jerry Cunningham is either good or lucky. Maybe a bit of both.

Cunningham is the Lancaster car salesman who bought a race horse a year ago and has been doing quite well at Penn National with trainer Dave Demes-trie. He now has two horses. Missy Gray and Sir Fragile Behave. Missy, a four-year-old mare, has won four out of eight. Sir Fragile recently won a trophy race in a $5,000 claimer at Penn Nat.

Says Jerry, I've had a few ups and a few downs, but lately weve been up. Cunnmghan. Jerry earlier this year raced Eco Fuel and Kwa Heri, lost Heri in a claiming race and sold Eco Fuel when he chipped a bone. SPORTS WRITING Its nice to see women getting into the profession. Denise Bachman, who was sports editor of the McCaskey High newspaper, Vidette, was recently named sports editor of The Daily Collegian at Penn State where she is a MSC Triumphs SPORTS CONTINUED phrey, who caught five passes, tied the MSC record for the most catches in a season (35), and the 63 points were the most scored by a Marauder team in modern history.

Carpenter, commenting on MSCs NCAA bid prospects, you look at the seventh, eighth and ninth-ranked teams and compare their records and the caliber of the competition these teams face, my own personal feeling is that, no doubt about it, a bid should be forthcoming to this team. Millersville 7 7 35 14 -43 Salisbury 0 10 0 0 10 Syracuse 30, Navy 14 ANNAPOLIS (AP) Syracuse quarterback Bill Hurley ran for one touchdown, passed for another and guided the Orangemen to a 30-14 victory over Navy Saturday. Hurley, who supplanted Ernie Davis as the third leading rusher in Syracuse history, moved his team 51 yards in just four plays for the first score late in the opening quarter. He set up the touchdown with a scamper which broke Davis career mark of 2,385 yards rushing and then hit tight end Anthony Sidor on an 1 8-yard scoring pass. Early in the second period, the senior quarterback carried over from the four-yard line for a touchdown which he set up with a 65-yard pass to Art Monk.

Three field goals by Gary Anderson and a six-yard scoring run by Joe Morris accounted for the rest of Syracuses 30 points, the most given up by Navy in nine games this year. The victory gives Syracuse a 6-4 season record. Navy is 6-3. Rutgers 20, Army 0 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Its the complete history from the beginning through 1978, 278 pages of absolutely everything that Allen Lewis (the Inquirer baseball writer) and Larry Shenk (the Millersville State grad and Phillies PR man) could think of.

It even has my favorite all-time Phillie name, Ben Tincup. I found Ben listed under Armed Forces List, men who played with the Phillies and whose careers were interrupted by duty in the Armed Forces during World War One and Two. The book, in paper, is $8.95 and published by Stein and Day, New York. BIG BUCKS-This from the latest CBA press release: When you dont have the big bucks to throw around, you dont have the big names to throw on the court. The Lancaster Red Roses learned that lesson again when they were forced to sell 7-footer Brent Vroman (ex-UCLA, cut by the 76ers) to Hawaii.

We wanted him, said coach Bob Raskin, but he didn want to play in this part of the country, and we couldnt offer him the kind of money that would change his mind. trainer cuts away part of running back John Sieber's mud- caked jersey.
