Spokane may soon be favored with the presence of Mrs. Ballington Booth, the famous wife of the founder of the Volunteers of America. Some time ago word was receied by Captain McClelland, In charge of the local corps, that Mrs.

Booth was contemplating a trip weet and would probably visit this city. No further word was received till the lat edition of the 'Volunteer Gazette arrived, In which it is stated positively that 'MrB, Booth will come west. She is quoted as follows: "It is quite a sudden arrangement my going to California. A trip to Colorado, in which I am to visit the prison at Canyon City, baa been an engagement of long standing. Two weeks ago I suddenly decided to go on from Colorado and spend two weekain Colonel Duncans territory, so I shall soon be again with the boys In San Quentin and I hope also In Folsom." This article simply states that she will go to the west and visit California, but Captain McClelland slates emphatically that if this fnmous woman goes west at all she will stop In Spokane.

Jfo date can be set for her coming, but it will in all probability be during the present month. Mrs. Booth has the reputation of being one of the finest women speakers In the United States, and it is probable that the Auditorium will be engaged for her when here. It was recently announced that Colonel Duncan, in charge of the western division of the Volunteers of American, would come north. Thla proposed trip he has had to abandon on account of the illness of his wife.

However, he Is planning to make a trip in the early summer and Spokane will be one of his chief stopping places. It may be that he will accompany Mrs. Booth on her trip through this territory. The presence of these two noted people in the city will mean a great deal to the Volunteers of this corps It will awaken intei est in their work and strengthen them financially. In speAk-In of them, he said: "There Is no more use to talk about baseball or any other outdoor athletics for this summer unlets we get the grounds Immediately. The time Is past for speculation.

When we get the grounds we will have a city league in a few days. Now the grounds that must be secured will have to be of a nature that can be con-itructed Into a diamond. We do not want gravel, we must get away from the rocks end should find a place where grading will jjot be necessary. "I visited the race trak In Union Park the other day and I was surprised at the location. It Is a natural park.

The distance from the city is considerable, but the day Is past when we can get a park in the middle of the city. The soil In Union Park Is of the character that would make ideal grounds. There Is no grave and no giad-Ing will be necessary. The grounds are there for us, and they are the beat in the city. "There is no doubt that If the athletic club or the Gentleman's Driving Club takes hold of the proposition the street car company will extend its Unes the extra halt mile and good service will be given.

It anything Is to be done In the matter, however, it will have to be done soon, at the teaaon is almost here and delay will put stop to baseball." Mr end Mrs. J. A. Teacftck McClure Mrs. Edzlngton ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft 41 ft Mr and Mrs.

The scores of the teams for the evening play were aa follows: Reynolds and Nlcholls 85 Campbell and Johnson Second series: Reliant (6 and Hebberd (6). Comor and Braech Third series: Rrasch and Connor Campbell and Johnson ..84 Fourth series: Campbell and Johnson 88 Milam (6) and Hebberd .66 George Webster ha. been evolving In hie mind a new scheme for perpetual motion of late.

He haa only disclosed hie plan, to the death watch and a few of the Jailers, but he last evening outlined the general scheme to a Chronicle representative. You know If you get near a revolving wheel how you ran feel the air thrown off from the rim. Well, my echeme would be to arrange fans like those you see In restaurants so as to catch the breeze. Now, the wind would turn the fans, and I would In turn use the wind given oft by the fan. to keep the wheel going.

If the machine was properly constructed I don't see why it would not run forever If It was once started. Of course, I mean It would run until the material wore out." ThirfUng of perpetual motion machines Is not the only occupation of the notorious prisoner over in the iron house. He reads consldersbly and has all kinds of magazines, papers end books, Including the Bible. The African war has particularly Interested him. He Is Gaining Flesh.

Webster la gaining flesh under the good care of the death watch. John Demmlck looks after him from morning until night Under the present arrangement Webster can have an hour's exercise In the Jailers room and hall outsids of his cell every morning and afternoon. Until he went up to be sentenced last February, Webster says he had not been outside of the cell In 10 months. Besides the exercise outside hie cell, Webster Is allowed to order anything he fancies to eat The extra expensa falla on Sheriff Cole, but under the trying condition of a death watch he thinks that the prisoner should have some luxuries which had been withheld before. On visitors day there Is always a crowd of curious people who come In to see the notorious prisoner.

This crowd has Increased of late since the date for the execution was set. Most of the visitors are women and girls. The county Jail Just now has more occupants than for months. There were 49 Inmates today, moBt of them being In for pet tv larcenv. Among the prisoners are two boys under 16.

Kelly, the Mocking Bird. Michael Kellv. the man convicted of holding tip the Kairfleld ealonn and afterward examined for insanity, has become noted among the prisoners as a great whistler. Ills imitation of the mocking bird's whistle is a bit of mimicry that would be hard to excel. During the recreation hours he often amuses the others In the corridors with his novel music.

FREE! Birthday Anniversary Mrs. Trances M. Kingsbury entertained the ladles of Bt. Agnes Guild Wednesday afternoon at her home In theLlndelleblock, the date being her birthday anniversary. In the color scheme of the decorations lavender and green were maintained In the parlor, violets and palms being used in the arrangement.

Rosea were the decorations in the dining room, pink being the prevailing color in the flowers In the refreshments served. Progressive conversation was arranged aa a part of the entertainment of the afternoon. It was quite on enjoyable occasion and the guests in leaving wished the hostess many happy returns of the day. Benefit Society The ladles of Spokane Camp of the Royal Neighbors of America met yesterday afternoon at the home of Mra Kays on Ida avenue and formed a benefit club.
