Oramm's singing and June's guitar work are the strong points of Foreigner. Both are smooth and efficient without getting too strident. All in all, "Doublp Vision" is an enjoyable if not particularly original work.

Like the first Foreigner album, it sounds better the more you listen to it. If this group doesn't get loo hung up on iormulas, it has a long future ahead of it. "Double Vision" is quite good in spots, but it was almost predictable that a followup wouldn't fully recapture the quality of the first.

Foreigner was the great left-field surprise of 1977. A band of six virtual unknowns, it came up with one of the best first-time albums ever, an LP that stayed in the national top 20 for almost a ear. It was all based on a simple formula combine hard rock riffs with pleasant melodies, add flowing harmony vocals and good musicianship and you have a hit. The formula is simple, but the execution isn't. Few bands are able to carry it off.

Foreigner came as close to perfection as the genre will probably ever see. The group was founded by a pair Of English journeymen, Mick Jones and Ian McDonald (it seems like practically all British rockers are called either Mick or Ian). Jones, the lead guitarist, played for a time with Leslie West and Spooky Tooth, while McDonald, who alternates between guitar, keyboards, sax and flute, was an original member of King Crimson. They joined forces with drummer and countryman Dennis Elliott and three Americans: singer Lou Gramm, keyboardist AI Greenwood and bassist Ed Gagliardi. Together, they put out their first album.

Foreigner. Jones had a hand in writing every one of the ten songs on that debut. His veteran's skills were in fine form, as each tune sounded like a potential hit single. Two of them were "Feels Like the First Time" and "Cold As Ice." Not surprisingly. Foreigner stays in the same musical groove for "Double Vision!" That's not necessarily good, because some of the new songs don't carry the same freshness and impact of the original ones.

The hardest rocker is the opening cut, "Hot Blooded," a Free sound-alike that lets Gramm sing in the gruff manner of Paul Rodgers. Jones continues to write most of the songs. His lyrics, as on "Blue Morning," are straight-foward reflections on love either amazement that things are working out or amazement that they're going awry: "Blue morning, blue day Won't you see things my way? Biue morning, can you see What your love has done to me? Gramm wrote the lyrics for "Love Has Taken Its TnlUia ruwdy number that's a blunt, funny comment on rejection: "Some girls you meet, seem so -complete Like they don't want nothing from you They're out to show you, they don't want to know you When deep inside they' do" Three of the songs sound labored.

The title cut and "Lonely Children" are competent but a little too bombastic, while a slower number like "I Have Waited So Long" seems too quiet and dried out.
