McGraw, former governor of Washington, occurred at Seattle at 6:45 last The former executive had been suffering for the last four months with an attack of typhoid fever. W. A. Major, pastor of the Bethany Presbyterian church, will officiate al the funeral services Saturday at 2 o'clock. Public memorial services will be held Sunday afternoon 1:30, at the First Presbyterian church. John Harte McGraw, son of Daniel and Catherine (Harte) McGraw.

was born at Barker plantation, Penobseot county, Maine, near the Canadian bor- der, October 4, 1850. Years of Public Life. He came to San Francisco in 1876, staying but a few months and then moving to Seattle. In 1878 he became member of the Seattle police force, and in 1879 he was elected, marshal and chosen by the city as chief of police. He was next elected sheriff, holding the office for three terms.

During that time he took up the study of law, and was admitted to bar. He became very active in republican politics, and in the fall of 1892 was elected govof the state on that ticket. ernor. During his term a8 governor, the panic of 1893 on, A and his administration proved a tempestuous one. Several serious strikes occurred during the term.

Riots were threatened in a number of towns at the of the mustering of Coxey's army. He was instrumental in effecting a settlement of the strike in the coal mines of King and Pierce counties. Because of his inattention to his personal affairs during his term of fice, he found himself almost a bankrupt at its conclusion. He went to the Alaska gold fields and was successful enough to be enabled to pay off creditors. Upon his return to Seattle he entered the real estate iness 8 and again accumulated some wealth.

Their wives being left at home, they are glad to employ the street needlewomen. For this class of customers the skill of the itinerant sewing women answers every purpose. As a rule, they are wives of boatmen and laborers who live in the houseboats which line the creeks, and their needles are a great help in solving the problem of maintenance in a crowded city. ROOSEVELT DAM NEARLY FINISHED Foundation of World's Most Wonderful Structure Covers One Acre of Ground. Placed by the side of a 20-story building, it would rise 10 feet above it, while its length on top would be more than two city blocks. Across its top will be a roadway "The reservoir created by the velt dam is the largest artificial body of water in the world. Its capacity in 61,000,000,000 cubic feet, and if its water were spread over the state of Delaware It would cover the entire surface of the state a foot in depth. MACKIE IS DEAN OF DISPATCHERS Man Who Has Seen 52 Years of Service Is Visitor to Spokane. J.

F. Mackie is the dean of the train dispatchers of this country. So far as any of the delegates to the present national convention of train dispatchers now in session in this city know Mr. Mackie is the oldest train dispatcher in point of years of service in the United States. Mr.

Mackie Scotchman. He began his railroad career in 1858 on the Grand Trunk railroad in Canada when J. F. Mackie, the Veteran Train Dispatcher. boy of 15, Train dispatching was then just being introduced.

At present he is connected with the Rock Island in Chicago and is regarded as the greatest authorities in the country on train dispatching. Mr. Mackie is secretary and treasurer of the association as well as editor of the Train Dispatchers Bulletin. "Things have changed wonderfully," he said today, "since I began. He Likes Spokane.

"This is first visit to Spokane. The 'go' to "the people here impresses me wonderfully. Years ago when train service was limited we had lots of time to 'talk' to the boys 'down the line' on our division, but since the demands of the public have brought about trains every few minutes it keeps the 'key men' hustling to keep up with the work. There 1g no chance to 'gas' or any time to waste. "The train dispatcher must of necessity be a man of action.

He is and must be cool, accurate and keen. There is also, I am glad to say, almost no imbibing among train dispatchers of today. Each section of the country seems to have a 'system' of their own just as you have the 'A. B. here.

Each is good for its individual section, but none would work parts of the country.
