Gail Kobe Knew How To Act, Now She Knows She Can Teach GAIL KOBE, who portrays the dean of women in "Bright Promise" weekdays at 3:30 p.m. on Channel 8. Gail Kobe knows how to act. She didnt know if she could teach, though. Now she knows.

"I never thought I could teach, the actress said. I thought Id be rotten. About two years ago (drama coach) Jeff Corey called me and asked me to teach at San Fernando Valley State College. I figured if he had enough faith in me to call, I owed it to him to try. I said Id give it a try, for a month.

The response was good and I had a wonderful time. I found that I could communicate. DAYTIME SERIES When Gail isnt teaching, shes "communicating as an actress, in a similar college setting. She portrays Ann Boyd, Dean of Women, in "Bright Promise, daytime dramatic series colorcast Monday through Friday on the NBC Television Network and WGAL-TV at 3:30 p.m. The half hou'r series, starring Dana Andrews as president of Bancroft College, focuses on a modern state University in a middle-sized city.

The stories center on Bancrofts administration, faculty and students, and their reactions to the rapidly changing and increasing permissive society in which they A far cry from the sequestered academic community of a generation ago, Bancroft is a microcosm of todays larger world, and its students are more interested in the probing and analysis of everything that makes society tick than with the next prom or fraternity dance. Catalysts of the action are Bancrofts President, Thomas Boswell, an enterprising and ambitious widower in his middle forties; Anri Boyd, the attractive, 35-year-old counselor for women students, to whom Boswell is engaged; Bill Ferguson, an associate professor of lish, and his intelligent but unresponsive wife, Martha; Sandra Jones, a vibrant 19-year old coed who is strongly attracted to Professor Ferguson; and Susan and Chet Matthews, two young newly-marrieds, who find their 58 marriage threatened by the sacrifices required to enable Chet to earn his medical degree. TEACHER KOBE Acting, like music takes training and exercise. Gail explained some of the techniques she uses in her teaching. The first few weeks I dont let the students talk at all, she said.

I try to help them develop an openess by investigating new ways of doing something. Everything is different when you start investigating. Take water, oil, rubbing alcohol, and volka. They look the same but they are not the same. I will have them standing in containers and then get students to react.

Some will take a container and shove it under somebody elses nose. Someone else will taste the liquid and then offer it to another person. Another exercise involves leading a blindfolded person through a number of activities and have him describe all his sensations. These and other techniques help Gails students to stretch and become aware of the symbolism behind everything. Gail, like many other entertainers, believes its not what people say that is important, but rather how they say it.

People dont communicate with words, she said, they communicate with whats behind the words. Take the sentence, Im going to the store. It can suggest many things, depending on how to say it. It can suggest, I love you or I hate you or my gut aches beyond belief. You can go from hot to cold with it.

We tend to feel that there is only one way of doing something or saying something. Thats not true. I try to get my students to stretch to the absolute limits. Each one is given a chance to say the sentence and then the others must guess the intention behind the words. Gail Kobe was born Gabriella Kieliszewski in Detroit, Michigan.

She has appeared in more than 150 television shows, including a continuing role in Peyton Place. Her movie Page 36-GAIL KOBE SUNDAY NEWS.
