6-A THE SUNDAY NEWS, DECEMBER 29, 197 1 iWyjUHAWI JU IJ. -M AUM 4' I Jt tf 'r Xhi 1 Holtvvood Woman Stumps Panel On Whats My Line Program Once on stage, the panelists are introduced to the audience as they write their names on a large blackboard. Then, after they sit down beside Blyden, the panel is given a bit of information. In Eileens case, the clue was the fact her job is usually done by a man. In addition to Soupy (who remembered Eileen and disqualified himself as a panelist), the other panelists included Arlene Francis, Anita Gilette and the Amazing Kreskin.

They (the panelists) were intrigued by Soupy disqualification, Eileen related. And when one of the. panelists asked if Soupy ever availed himself to my services, the audience really laughed. The panelists asked me all kinds of questions whether I made people happy, if I do my job before a large crowd, whether its done by men as well as women. the only person who made a guess at my occupation was Arlene who thought I was a masseuse! So Eileen, who never before appeared on TV, completely stumped the panel.

And afterwards all were treated to the taped interview made that morning. So the audience could see for themselves how well Eileen transformed herself into the jolly old man, the camermen magically merged her face into her made-up one as Santa and back again a trick that was especially effective. At the end of the show, Eileen shook hands with all of the panelists. Kreskin told her Lancaster County was one of his favorite spots, and Soupy Sales planted a big kiss on her cheek. Wait til my husband sees that! Eileen said with a laugh.

How Eileen came across her job as Santa is a Christmas story in itself. Her husband Karl, a welder was laid off for the second Christmas in a row. Determined to earn money for presents, they went to Manpower, for any odd jobs they could get. I was sitting in the Manpower office hoping for an assignment when one of their representatives exclaimed he had to come up with a Santa in two days. The woman in charge pointed in my direction, and when I turned to see who she was pointing to, I realized no one else was in the room! I said I couldn't.

.1 joked about losing 52 pounds. I didnt know what to do and told her Id have to think about it. But it was a job, and we needed the money, and I made up my mind I would be the best Santa there was. That was five years ago, and because Eileen proved to be such a real Santa, she has been back every year by popular demand (though she missed last year due to a broken foot). Ideally suited to the job, Eileen goes out of her way to make her version of Santa as realistic as possible Her success is revealed in the following letter one of many addressed each year to Santa Claus, Manor Shopping Center.

It reads: Dear Santa, Today I took my littler girl to a local store with me when I returned a purchase made earlier in the day. She wanted to see Santa, so we went to the Santa House, but she wouldnt go to talk to that Santa. She said she wanted to talk to the real Santa. the one that took pictures. I just wanted to share this with you.

God bless you for your fine work. Love, A Devoted Friend and Parent. By CATHY BARNETT The story doesnt sound as if its true. Who would believe that a trip to see a favorite TV personality at a local night club would lead to a stint on Whats My Line? But thats exactly what happened to Mrs. Eileen Bernhardt of Holtwood R2, a gregarious woman who has been expertly portraying Jolly Old St.

Nick at the Manor Shopping Center for the past five years. The story actually began Nov. 6, when Eileen and her daughter, Georgia, went to see Soupy Sales at the Conesto-ga-Sheraton. One particular joke had the Bernhardt party in stitches, so much so that after the performance Soupy stopped at their table to comment what a good audience they were. One comment lead to another, and soon Soupy learned about Eileens seasonal occupation and asked if she would be interested in being a contestant on the show (Soupy is a regular panelist on Whats My I couldnt believe it, Eileen commented with a chuckle.

Soupy asked me all about my job, and to write down my name and address. The only piece of paper I had was a blank check! I didnt really think Id hear from them again, but a week later I received a phone call from the program director asking for a photo and more information. A telegram followed, and soon my daughter and I were on our way to New York City for the actual taping. At first, the director wasnt sure whether he wanted Eileen to be the shows mystery guest or a regular contestant. (Virginia Graham ended up as the mystery guest).

However, because of Eileens unusual occupation, it was decided her portion of the program would be taped in two separate segments one in her Santa ensemble, and one in front of the panelists as a regular contestant. You hear so many things about game shows, but this one is really on the up and Eileen added. I was instructed not to tell anyone what I did once I got to New York, and the mysteiy guests (five shows are taped in one afternoon) were kept in a separate room until taping time. For Eileen, there was a morning taping session where Larry Blyden, the shows moderator, interviewed her as Santa. Questions ranged from what the biggest toy was going to be this year to whether Santa ever gets gifts.

Asked if Santa was going to use Rudolph this year on Christmss Eve, Santa answered: I have to, you never know when youre going to hit a fog! After this session, Eileen had a break for lunch, only to have the waitress spill beef stew all over the dress she had planned to wear for the afternoon taping. I ended up wearing a dress I hadnt worn in years, Eileen related. I felt dumb all over. She even had a rough time getting into the studio for the regular show (all games are taped before an audience). It seems Eileen was so convincing as Santa no one believed who she was! During the taping, Eileen followed a contestant from Australia who was the worlds champion surfer.

As she watched him, the thought she was going to flub up kept running through her mind. Before the show everyone was so nice and extremely professional. All the contestants are thoroughly briefed and asked all kinds of questions the panel may ask on the show. And I was told that if I could get the audience on my side, they would be with me the whole way. You can imagine how nervous I was waiting backstage.

But somehow, once I was on stage, everything went okay. I didnt even have to worry about the audience, because as soon as they saw my occupation on the moniter, I could here hear them ooh and aah. all, who could be against Santa Claus? For the past five years, Eileen Bernhardt has been delighting the children who visit her at the Manor Shopping Center. Recently she taped a segment for the "What's My line" program which will be aired locally Feb. 20.

When she's not playing Santa, Eileen works as an investigator for the District Attorney's Consumer Protection Bureau. Please Note: Eileen Bernhardts segment of Whats My Line will be broadcast Jan. 23 in the Philadelphia area, and on Feb. 20 on WGAL-TV. Orange sent in a request for Scripture Cake. I have received many responses and while most of the recipes are the same, some of the accompanying letters are charming. The first recipe for the cake which Mrs. Howard L. Nelson of Lititz R2 sent in will tax the old brains unless you are really familiar with the Bible.

Mrs. Nelson said, I hope this is the cake Mrs. Jones asked for: Find out he number of sons Zebedee had with him when mending their nets, and you will have the number of cups of brown sugar to use. Take the number of camels Abrahams oldest servant took on his journey to find Rebekah for a wife for Issac and subtract the number of letters of an apostle to whom it was said: Behold an Israelite in whom is no guile, and you will have the number of cups of sweet milk you are to use. Take the number of fishes and divide the number of loaves when Jesus fed the 5,000.

This will give you the exact amounts of cups of flour to use. To find the number of eggs you take the number of days Paul stayed with Publius at Melita they must be well beaten. Add the number of years Joshua lived to the number of years he was old when he was sent by Moses to spy the land, then subtract the number of fishes the disciples caught at the sea of Tiberias and you have the correct number of spoons of baking powder. Last but not least, find out what Herod had sworn he would give the daughter of Herodias, then take two cups and fill each one with the given promise. You then have just the correct amount each of butter and shortening.

With this one, you still have to hunt your ingredients, but the clues are given. Of special interest, I think, is the paragraph of instructions. Cooking enthusiasts who take pride in their culinary efforts are following the expert advice of chefs associated with famous restaurants. They have found that the addition of cordials, for example, can make the difference between the ordinary and the exceptional. Chocolate-based liqueurs have become especially popular for truffles, petit fours, fudge, chocolate fondue, mousse, cakes and pies.

Bruno Comin, the pastry chef of the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York, illustrates with a luscious pie how suitable the chocolate-fruit liqueurs can be for flavoring desserts. He uses the chocolate-cherry liqueur, flavored with cacao beans from Ghana and three different varieties of cherries Montmorency, Morello and Danish Dalmation, a balance of tart and sweet for his chocolate cherry pie. Chocolate-fruit liqueurs, which also include chocolate raspberry and chocolate banana, as well as chocolate mint, have become additionally popular as after dinner drinks. You might like to try the Chocolate Raspberry Cream or serve the chocolate raspberry in a chocolate cup which can then be eaten. CHOCOLATE CHERRY PIE Pi Crust Ingredients: 2 cups flour 14 tsp.
