St. Joseph, News-Press, Sunday, Oct. 19, 1975 3D Jerry Oates back for title try Cornhuskers hold off Oklahoma State STILLWATER, Okla. (AP)- Vince Ferragamo, subbing for starter Terry Luck, ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more, fourth-ranked Nebraska had to withstand a fierce Oklahoma State rally to preserve a 28-20 Big Eight football vietory Saturday. Nebraska never trailed in the game, leading 21-7 at halftime, but the Cowboys refused to fold and had a chance to tie the game in the final minute of play.

0-State, which had closed the gap to 28-20, got the ball on the Husker 23 after a bad snap to punter Randy Lessman and quickly moved to the Nebraska line. But on a third down situation, cornerback Dave Butterfield trapped Cowboy star running back Terry Miller for a three-yard loss to stall the threat. Nebraska jumped out in front 14-0 when Ferragamo, who came in when Luck suffered an eye injury first quarter, passed eight yards to John O'Leary and later directed an 88-yard march, going the final four yards himself for the score. The Cowboys finally got going with a 48-yard drive to cut the deficit to 14-7. Terry Miller scored the first of his three touchdowns on a five-yard run.

But Nebraska answered that by again blasting 80 yards in 13 plays capped by Ferragamo's one-yard scoring plunge to give the Huskers a 21-7 advantage at intermission. On two occasions in the drive, the 6-foot-3, 208-pound Ferragamo hit vital third-down passes of nine yards to Tony Davis and 22 yards to Dave Shamblin. A fumbled punt by Bobby Thomas at the 14 set up a fouryard touchdown by Miller in the third period that cut the gap to 21-14. Abbie Daigle was injured after connecting on conversion attempt and left the game for the Cowboys. But the Cowboys.

returned the favor by coughing up the ball at their own 27 plays later Ferragamo hit Brad Jenkins on a 10-yard touchdown toss that made it 28-14, which stood up for the victory. Even in a 22-point defeat, the K-State defense fired by Gary Spani, Carl Pennington and Vic Chandler was magnificent. The Wildcats held Joe Washington, the Oklahoma AllAmerican, to 49 yards on 18 rushes and to 27 yards on three kickoff returns. Only on their first possession, the successful 72-yard march, did the Sooners display the devastating offense that made them national champions in 1974. Horace Ivory struck for eight and Davis five. Washington and Ivory each added four. After his pass was no good, Davis ran seven yards and pitched off to Elvis Peacock for four more. Davis ran for seven, and Washington got a first down on the 24.

(AP) Tailbacks Gordon Bell, Rob Lytle and Harlan Huckleby scored two touchdowns each and combined for more than 350 Saturday as tenth ranked Michigan used a record-setting rushing attack to crush Northwestern 69-0 in a Big Ten football game. It was the most lopsided Michigan victory since 1947, when the Wolverines clobbered Pittsburgh by an identical 69-0 score. It was Northwestern's worst loss since a 76-0 setback to Chicago in 1899.

Michigan set a team record of 573 yards rushing, 300 in the first half. The record equalled the conference mark set by Michigan State against Purdue in 1971 and surpassed Michigan's previous best of 524 against Iowa in 1969. The teams were tied with Ohio State for the conference lead but it was no contest from victory over hot-pursuing Kansas State. The victory was the Sooners' 26th in succession and extended their streak without defeat to 35 straight games. It was anything but artistic.

The Sooners swept down the field 72 yards on 14 plays on their first possession, Horace Ivory carrying five yards through a big hole in the right side for the touchdown. After that, Oklahoma, its offensive line unable to hold off the charging Wildcat defenders, had to struggle just as the Sooners did in narrow escapes the last three weeks against Miami of Florida, Colorado and Texas. Oklahoma, after failing to on fumble capitalize, the Wildcats' 35, traveled 68 yards, mostly on Davis's passing, for a 14-0 lead.
