BELFAST (UPI) British troops reported hitting five gunmen in firefights in Belfast and Londonderry today.

Hundreds of Roman Catholic families stayed away from their Belfast homes to protest the presence of troops they said made the area a battleground. British troops reported hitting four gunmen in a two-hour clash in Belfast's Catholic Old Park area and another gunman in Londonderry. The army said sniper at- tacks wounded one soldier in Belfast's Catholic Lower Fall area and another in Strabane on the Irish Republic border. A bombing wave which the IRA has said aims at wrecking Londonderry's economy also roared on. Bombs blasted a fertilizer factory in IRA-controlled Catholic Bogside district, a barricaded area closed off to the army and police, and a downtown wholesale grocery.

In both cases gunmen who planted the bombs gave warning and there were no casualties. 446 Casualties Belfast's Lenadoon area, largely evacuated by Catholic families Sunday, remained largely deserted today except for troops and men of the Catholic ex-servicemen organization on volunteer patrol. The army said eight personsfive civilians, two sol Reimpose Controls on Lumber WASHINGTON (AP) The Cost, of Living Council Monday reimposed controls on a segment of the lumber industry that had been exempted only a short time earlier. The council said it is remov-' ing the small business exemption as it applies to companies in the lumber industry. It was the first time the government has put controls on a of the economy previously exempted.

The effect of the action is to put all manufacturing, wholesale and retail businesses with annual lumber sales of more than $100,000 a year back under controls. The council said an estimated 62,000 lumber companies nationwide are being brought under controls. Mr. Mason, said he expected Democratic gains here as a result of the Eagleton candidacy would chiefly result from additional persons voting who might not otherwise have been interested. "But we may also swing over what otherwise would have been some Republican votes," he added.

SAIGON (AP) Early 100 U.S. B52 bombers and a naval task force of more than a dozen cruisers and destroyers blasted North Vietnamese positions on both sides of the demilitarized zone today in some of the heaviest bombardments of the war. Six hours later, after the policeman was off 'One Killed, Four Hurt at Complex KANSAS CITY, Mo. (UPI) One man was killed and four others were injured when a crane collapsed at the Harry S. Truman Sports Complex east of Kansas City.

The dead man was identified as Harold L. Bratton, 26, of Bucyrus, Kan. He died when a girder he was riding with four other men was sent plunging into seats at the east end of the football stadium, pinning several of the men. The crane which buckled had been lifting the girder Into place for a speaker sys-, tern support. Spokesmen for the prime contractor at the site, Sharp Kedde Webb Con-tractors, would not comment.
