The lirst Is that which Individual operators have done by reason of the bunks' refusal to extend maturing loans made to favored customers three to- twelve months ago at rates of Interest lower than stock brokers could meet on marginal business. Many such loans appear to have been on collateral that brokers have not seen lit to take over in tho recenj condition of the money market. The other source of stock supply has been the accumulation lines of speculative pools, many of whicb were said to have been forced to throw over large amounts of single issues from collateral securing loans that could not be renewed. This has served to Impress on borrower and lender the danger of making large loans on collateral of one kind in times of credit uncertainty. Foreign Exchange Improves. The broad advance in the stock market today, brought about by the retirement of still another portion of the ihort 'interest, was another tacit admission from teh bear element that It had carried the selling too far on the basis of the Rubso-Polish disturbance. The advance also furnished some evidence that enformed liquidation of accounts from which support in the gorm of time money had been withdrawn had run Us course. Further selling from this source cannot be much of a factor In the near future since the time money market has been "practically deadlocked for everal months, borrowers preferring to finance their operations by demand loans from day to day. There have been sessions since the big break that have produced gains large as those recorded in standard issues today, but those markets have been different in two particulars: they have not embraced as large a number of Issues as today's market did, and they have not been as steady.

There were no successive rises and falls of the tide of speculation today. The firmness of sterling contributed its bit to the strength of stocks today. Sterling checks sold during the morning at 3.63 and in the early afternoon moved up to $3.65. These rates oompare with I3.62V4 as yesterday's final price.

Realization that the banking syndicate which purchased tho Sinclair Consolidated Oil Corporation 7 percent notes will dissolve tomorrow brought heavy selling Into tho market for these securities on the Curb this morning. As a matter of fact the decline started late yesterday, bringing the price down from 97 4 to 96tt. The first sale recordod today was at 91, a net loss of 5 points, and from that figure tho notes declined to 88 on the sale of about 200. This offer of Sinclair notes is the most unfortunate piece of tianancing attempted this year.

The syndicate started to offer these $50,000,000 notes to the public on April 21, and it was generally appreciated, ulmost from the beginning, that they were not being well received. The New York and Chicago bankers comprising the syndicate were having grout difficulty in getting the public interested. The market tor the notes has always been a thin one and only the sustaining power of the syndicate has held them up so near the Issue price of 98. With the syndicate retiring noteholders are anticipating a slump. Suinduril Oil of New York.
