$39,000. THE HOPE STANDARD, June 4, 1980 3 High School Students Pay Visit to College Campus This week saw Grade 12 high school students visiting the chemistry laboratory at F.V.C.'s East Campus. They were participating in workshops instigated and run by faculty members Dr. Alan Davis and Peter Slade, and laboratory assistant Gordon Von Hollen. On May 26, a class from M.E.I., together with their teacher Rudy Dyck, undertook a session entitled "Chemical Analysis of an The compounds were identified by applying the methods of systematic chemical analysis.

To judge from the responses of the students, the exercise was a qualified success; they found it interesting and useful, and exposed them to the instruction and facilities available at F.V.C. On Monday, June 2, Grade 12 Science students travelled to Abbotsford to participate in a one-day workshop on They received background instruction in the theory and of infra-red, ble, and atomic absorbtion spectroscopy, and also enjoyed the experience of using the College's modern, sophisticated instrumentation. The day began with "The Extraction and Identification of Caffeine in a Cola Soft and was followed by "A Spectrophotometric Determination of the Alcohol in After lunch, the analysis of a water sample for lead, copper, iron and manganese by atomic absorbtion was undertaken. Again, the response from the students was very positive; they welcomed the opportunity to widen their laboratory experience. The F.V.C.

faculty were equally impressed with their They not only showed great initiative and enthusiasm in their participation, they also demonstrated (by their perceptive questions) that they understood a good part of some rather difficult theoretical principles. "It was a day well spent!" said instructor Alan Davis. "Next year, we hope to expand these visits to include more schools and more student. I must thank Mr. Alfred (Sardis Secondary) and Wingren (Chilliwack Senior Secondary) for their cooperation in this year's activities." Drinking Drivers Fined in Court Three people appeared in Hope Provincial Court on Tuesday, May 27, to answer charges related to drinking and driving.

Jacob E. Olin was ordered to pay a fine of $300 on a charge of driving with a blood-alcohol reading over .08. Alternative to the fine is 10 days in jail. William J. Breasley was fined $450 on the same charge.

If he defaults on payment of the fine he is to serve 30 days in prison. Richard A. Vogt was fined Art of Carle Hessay to Be Exhibited at Langley During the month of June the Langley Centennial Museum and National Exhibition Centre is hosting an exhibition of paintings by the late Carle Hessay. The Art of Carle Hessay traces the artist's development from his student days in Paris and Germany through to his life in Langley, when the greater portion of his work was accomplished. Hessay experimented with colour, and in fact, often collected the materials for making his own pigments while exploring the province's interior.

Many of his paintings are monochromatic, an effect which highlights their dramatic, spiritual quality. Whether of a deserted B.C. village or of an ocean view, the paintings have a symbolic, sometimes futuristic expression. The primary concern seems to be to take the viewer beyond the everyday, to instill a meaning of greater significance. As Leonard Woods has written of "Abandoned "One senses a profound sadness characterizing this abandonment, and LEGAL NOTICES LEGAL NOTICES B.C.

ORR, -TREASURER Wants Increased Hay Production SERVICES Agriculture Minister Jim Hewitt today urged farmers throughout B.C. to take all possible steps to increase production of second cut hay and silage crops for the 1980-81 winter feeding period. As a result of -the Mt. St. Helens volcanic eruption, much of the first crop hay in the Columbia Basin of Washington state has been damaged or destroyed by falling ash.

Dairy farmers in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, who normally import nearly 100,000 tons of alfalfa from the Columbia Basin, may be forced to look elsewhere for hay supplies. To date, hay producting in Oregon and Southern Idaho has been unaffected but competition for hay from those areas is expected to be keen. The situation in Alberta is now improved due to recent rains but drought stricken farmers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba may be looking to Alberta for hay supplies. In the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island areas, it is not too late to plow up non-productive fields for corn and other annual crops. Productive hay fields should be fertilized after the first crop has been removed.

"We still have nearly a full season ahead of us," Hewitt said, "and much can be done here at home to alleviate the anticipated shortage." Tripmakers Close Down $250 for driving with a reading over .08. He is to serve 30 days if he does not pay the fine. Robert W. Cerney was ordered to serve seven days in jail when he appeared to answer a charge of driving while suspended. Carl Rogers was fined $75 or five days in jail on a charge of causing a disturbance.

In court on May 26, Dennie U'Ren was given a suspended sentence and placed on probation for 12 months when he appeared to answer a charge of assault. Richard D. Sheremeto was ordered to pay a fine of $350 or in default of payment of the fine to serve 30 days in prison on a charge of failing to appear in court when summonsed. Three Injured Three people received minor injuries and an estimated $5,000 damage was done to two vehicles involved in a collision just west of Silver Creek bridge at 4:55 p.m. Saturday, May 31.

Mrs. Rose Chilson of Hope, was crossing the TransCanada highway when her vehicle was hit by a westbound vehicle driven by James Cairnie of Verdun, Quebec. Mrs. Chilson faces a charge of failing to yield the right-of-way after stopping. B.C.

Registrar of Travel Services Bill Rourke reported today that Tripmakers International, a B.C. travel wholesaler, has ceased operations. Rourke said he has been advised by Tripmakers that customers with flight reservations will be transferred to other tours or will be offered a full refund of their deposit if they do not wish to accept alternate arrangements. Rourke said that at the present time i it appears that consumer loss will be negligible.
