(NEA) Teammates believe there is considerable hope for Robin Roberts, who in two seasons has slid from the winningest to the losingest pitcher in National League.

"Roberts now realizes that the old style won't do it," says a Phillio teammate. "He was strictly a fast ball pitcher with control. Now he isn't as fast. So he's working, on different speeds now and there's no reason, why he can't win. He still has more stuff than a lot of guys who are winning.

"Roberts gets mad now, too. He didn't use to. When he got beat he'd suffer in silence. He thought that was the way he should act, being a big star. Now he throws things around and loses his temper.

And some that accepted the challenge lost. 30 PEOPLE DIE In the past two decades nearly 30 people fell victim to the Mille Miglia tour up and down Italy. Last year the sports car populace lost the Marquis de Port ago and 10 others.

This year the 1,000 miles becomes a mountain rally when run June 8. Out of all rules the Mille Miglia had built its reputation on, only the distance of 1,600 kilometers has been allowed by governmental order. The rally is expected to take 32 hours instead of the dozen needed by racers in the past years. In the past Ferraris and their brethren ripped over the roads at 175 mph. A 31-mile-an- hour average is needed this year.

By DON GOODWIN -To hear, some women tell it, we are now deep in a recession in manners. You particularly hear them tell it in buses and subways. Some men, in fact, report finding it hard to concentrate on their papers, what with all the them grumbling about the death of Chivalry. CYCLES Etiquette, like business, has cycles. Whenever there is a slump, it's pretty certain some excess preceded it.

And 50 years ago etiquette had excesses aplenty. To give you some idea, consider this "rule" in an old etiquette book recently discovered by the Manchester Guardian: "When a Gentlemen offers a Lady his chair, he should engage her in conversation for a few moments, thus giving the seat time to cool." "Presumably," concludes the Guardian, "this would save the lady the trouble of using her fan." Hot seats are not considered a problem today. What bothers a modern man is whether to give up his seat, period. Etiquette takes a practical view of the matter: GIVE UP SEAT In public conveyances men should relinquish their seats for pregnant women, women burdened with children or bundles, old and infirm women but not for every frisky young thing who climbs aboard. Although the FYT may disagree, this is not a bad rule.

Why should a bushed businessman stand so Health Herself can sit? Better he give up his seat to an old or disabled man. Form may be going out of etiquette, but humanitarism is coming in. IN a social setting, of course, the, better part of polish is to offer your seat to any' standing "female, whether she's Gussie Moran or your grandmother. The other limes a man should get to his feet include: BARBS By HAL COCHRAN Some people search all over for happiness, while others find it easily by raising a flock of children. An Indiana judge sent a man to jail for being habitually lazy.

Come summer, they'd better make the jails larger. They say that late eating makes you stay awake. That's nothing compared to what'U happen when night baseball comes again. A lot of rock and roll songs are not merely popular, they're a howling success. HUSSMAH FOOD ALL TYPES NEW and USED vary on different road surfaces But if the rear axle is actually to blame, no change is evident.

On the other hand, there is a difference in rear axle noise when the car is pulling, decelerating and coasting, whereas tire noise will stay about the same. Rear axle troubles usually announce themselves via various sounds: a heavy pitched rumble noticeable when accelerating, a gear noise on deceleration, a hum while coasting or growling on turns. M. K. writes:" All four of my brakes drag.

Is it true that incorrect pedal operation is one of the possible causes? (A) Lack of free pedal play, a binding pedal shaft or a faulty pedal return spring can be responsible for brake drag at all wheels. G. Z. asks: "I'm planning to buy a new car this year. How much extra must I pay if I want power steering and power braking?" (A) On some models, both are standard equipment.

When listed as optional, power brakes cost approximately $40 extra. Power steering runs for approximately $75 to $110 additionaL From O. "The steering gear of my '51 sedan rattles. Can you tell me why?" (A) A reasonable guess would be too much play in the steering gear, or too little lubricant in the assembly. But there are several other possibilities.

For a safe and sure answer, let a good mechanic check it over. I. W. writes: "We bave always used regular gas in Our 1957 V-8 engine with satisfactory results. Yet, according to our service station man, all of the newer V-8's should be ran on premium gas only." (A) It isn't so.

Regular gas is right for your engine and it's also specified for at least a dozen of the 1958 V-8 models. SAFETY REMINDER On the highway, never crowd the car you're trying to pass. It obscures your vision, doesn't give you enough room to speed up and get around him quickly. A new 16-page booklet, "Your Car," by Milmoe, is available, answering 50 common oar problems.
