Neither is real fast but they are quick. Quarterback John Hay is a good runner too. PASSING Barry Funk returns as the starter at quarterback but will probably alternate with Hay. They are about equal as passers with Funk better on long throws and Hay better on short, action passes.

Slot back Paul Brady and end Ray Wagner plus Gohn and Crider are all fairly good receivers so the passing should be adequate. OFFENSIVE LINE Guards Rudy Ney and Paul Stehman are among the better linemen in the league. Both are good blockers. Tackles and center could be problem spots because there is a lack of experience there, especially since Shope, a 1964 starter, is out for four to six weeks with an injury. Bill Sprecher is a good tackle prospect.

John Farmer and Wagner are pretty good ends. Offensive line should be OK if trouble spot at tackle can be solved. DEFENSIVE LINE Farmer and Wagner at ends are OK but again the tackle spots are questionable unless Sprecher fills the bill. Shope's return will help. Stehman will play one guard while the other is undecided.

Ney at one backerup is real good and Mike Aument is a good prospect at the other. Defense should be fairly good with helping plug vulnerable spots in line. SECONDARY Hay and Funk both played here last season along with Gohn and Mile Kyler. Shouldn't be too much of a problem. SUMMARY Depth could be: a problem but the first unit looks pretty strong at most spots, especially guards and in the backfield.

Brooks says: "we hope to be at least .500" and he shouldn't be disappointed on that score. He adds that there is only an chance for a championship but he may be a bit pessimistic when he says outside. Donegal appears to be one of the stronger teams and has to be rated contender. L. By The Associated Press Nothing's as rare as an undefeated season-in any league -but Pittsfield's Bill MacLeod obviously is a rare pitcher. If anything, the Red Sox hurler has gotten better as the eastern league season progressed, as evidenced by the shutout 18th victory without a pitched Sundefeats day night to defeat the Springfield Giants, 9-0, and bring Pittsfield to within celebration distance of the pennant. The Elmira Pioneers are still within grabbing distance, only one game from the top with their last slim chance available tonight, the last day of the season. The Pioneers stayed within reach of the Red Sox night, with a 4-0 whitewash of the Williamsport Mets.

The York White Roses scored a run in the ninth to edge the Reading Indians, 2-1, in the other Sunday game. If Pittsfield wins its game with Springfield tonight, the championship belongs to the Red Sox in their first year in the league. If they lose, Elmira would have to win to leap to the If Elmira Pittsfield top by one percentage, point. takes the pennant home, win or lose against Springfield. MacLeod, a lefthander scattered four hits, two of them of the infield variety.

Teammate Chris Coletta knocked the first run with a single in the second and Jim Russin his 19th homer in the sixth for a 2-0 margin. Giant pitching came apart in the ninth and Pittsfield put together five hits, three walks, two hit batters and a wild pitch for seven runs. Elmira also got some fine pitching, from Dave Leonhard, who gave up just two hits and struck out 13 in blanking the Mets. It was his 19th victory of the season, against five defeats. At York, catcher Dalton Renfroe tripled to score Frank Gable in the ninth inning for the White Roses victory.

Renfroe's triple gave Jack Jenkins his fourth win in 11 decisions. Hal Kurtz (6-12) took the loss. AFL PREVIEW Oakland Raiders By MURRAY OLDERMAN OFFENSE RECEIVERS--It becomes a question of who'll play with Art Powell (best split end in league even if he doesn't get all-pro votes). Bo Roberson working extra hard to hold flanker job because Fred Biletnikoff looks like best rookie receiver in football. Billy Cannon's behind Powell. Only tight end job is up in the air.

RATING -very good. OFFENSIVE -Could wind up with two new faces at tackle, Harry Schuh and Bob Svihus, and maybe even a third (Marv Marinovich) at guard. Lot depends on whether Ken Rice makes retirement stick. Only sure bets up front are perennial Jim Otto at center. Wayne Hawkins at guard.

But the new kids are unusual prospects. RATING-fair-togood. QUARTERBACKS--Though Though Cotton Davidson had early arm miseries, he'll share job again with Tom Flores. Flores is better pocket passer. Cotton does better eluding strong rush.

Former Jet Dick Wood is a solid back-up man. RATING- -good. RUNNING BACKS -Same old trouble at fullback. Alan Miller came out of retirement, Roger Hagberg was imported from Canada and Bob Jackson is a holdover. Halfback has good depth with Clemon Daniels, proven star, supported by place-kicking Gene Mingo, Keith Kinderman.

Davis has lots of ways he can juggle this array. RATING -fair. DEFENSE DEFENSIVE -Pretty well set on right side, with Dave Costa at tackle, big Ben Davidson (with handlebar mustache) at end. But tackle Rex Mirich, end Dalva Allen face trouble on left. Ike Lassiter, free agent pickup, is getting a long look.

And there's a rookie named Carleton Oats who's been camp sensation. RATING fair-to-good. LINEBACKERS- Unsettled situation here, too. Archie Matsos in middle, Clancey Osborne and John Williamson were the '64 regulars. But there's a darkhorse entry named Dick Hermann (Florida State) making a strong bid.

And two '64 rookies, Bill Budness and Dan Conners, are pushing hard at Matsos' position. RATING--good. DEFENSIVE BACKS--Best the Raiders have had. Rookies Kent McCloughan, Larry Todd look as if they could step right in. Dave Grayson was even-exchanged for Fred Williamson as corner man.

Howie Williams is a corner prospect, too. And they still have Joe Krakoski. Tommy Morrow, Claude Gibson, Warren Powers. RATING-very good. SUMMARY Best rookie crop in Raider history has buoyed hopes.

As many as five or six could wind up first-stringers. Normally, this should pull down performance because of inevitable mistakes. But Al Davis has a way with kids and with castoffs, too, for that matter. PREDICTION-first place. LANCASTER, NEW ERA-MONDAY, SEPT.

NATIONAL TENNIS Unseeded Pasarell Upsets 2d Seeded Stolle in 3 Sets FOREST HILLS, N.Y. (AP) The sell-out crowd of about 10,000 at the West Side Tennis Club watching Charles Pasarell spectacularly demolish Australian Fred Stolle must have wondered where he was when help was needed in the Davis Cup matches.

In the wings, waiting, watching and unwanted, that's where Charley was. The 21-year-old UCLA student, ranked 12th in the United States, was going through an unimpressive stage and was passed over when the selections were made for the U.S. Davis Cup team that lost to Spain 1 last month. Pasarell has no complaints. "I thought the others deserved to play Davis Cup tennis on their records," he said Sunday after his 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 conquest of Stolle, the No.

2 seed, in the biggest upset of the National Tennis Championships. "I didn't do well in clay court competition this year," Pasarell said, and added that he hopes to make the U.S. Davis Cup squad next. "Maybe I can make the team if I continue to play well at Forest Hills," he said. His play left nothing to be desired Sunday.

He was at the top of his game, serving and volleying well and nullifying the Australian's powerful deliveries with an excellent backhand. PLAY WAS SLUGGISH Stolle, a major factor in Australia's Davis Cup triumph over the United States last year, a beaten finalist in 1964 at Forest Hills and the No. 2 seed behind fellow Aussie Roy Emerson in this one, simply never got off the ground. He was sluggish and his game lacked lustre." "I don't care if I don't see a court for a month," the big Australian said. "I'm stale just too much tennis.

"Charlito was making no mistakes out there, and I couldn't do a thing right. I just had no desire." He started well enough, but midway through the first set began missing with his first service and Pasarell was scoroff his twisting second ball. The rout was on. Pasarell lost his service only once, in the second set, broke Stolle in the eighth game of the first set, the first and ninth of the second and swept through the third with astonishing ease. "My idea was to make my first service good and get to the net fast for volleys," Pasarell said.

"I got an unusually high Indian Springs "Hen" Rutter and John Overly marched into the final round of the Indian Springs Golf Center championship tournament Sunday with victories in the semi-final tussle. Rutter, firing an even par 70, took the measure of Ed Kirchner, five while Overly, shooting a 78, eliminated Tom McNellis, four-and-three. They will settle the title next Sunday over the 36-hole route. The morning round is listed for 9 and the afternoon clash at 2 p.m. Bob Myers won over Herm Greer, and Harry Overly took the measure of Charley Dyer, three-and-two, to reach the final round in the first flight.

Bob McDivitt won over Harry Harris, five-and-four, and Joe Keen defeated Dick Bender, one-up, to reach the finals of the second flight. Both the first and second flights will settle their titles over the 18-hole course next Sunday. HR-Romano (17).
