I Civil Continued From Page One and Weiglestown Fire Hall. There are plans to add more emergency hospitals and aid stations in the near future. Col Crawford pointed out that those townships and boroughs which do not have CD directors are not eligible for CD aid since supervisors and councilmen have failed to act in making the appointments. Once a CD director is appointed the political subdivision he serves is eligible for matching funds in the purchase of CD equipment of all types. "The State Council of Civil Defense in Harrisburg has informed us that it is mandatory for each political subdivision desiring to participate in federal or state matching funds and surplus property, should submit a letter recommending the appointment of a Civil Defense director.

The letter will be forwarded by this office to Harrisburg for a formal appointment by the Governor of Col. Crawford "Of course, this does not mean," Col. Crawford pointed out, "that we could not take our CD equipment into an area which has no local director should that area have a disaster. But, it does mean that would be no emergency equipment in the area unless it had been totally paid local taxpayers." The big CD items such as rescue trucks, generators and hospital equipment, are all charged to the county CD organization and are operated county-wide divisions. SHELTERS NEEDED The biggest single thing on the county CD agenda at present is public fallout shelters, Col.

Crawford indicated. He said he is pleased with the public response for shelter literature. "Civil Defense is an oft misunderstood phrase," he said. "As an organization we are here simply to help people help themselves in case of emergency. That's all CD is--people helping themselves.

And necessary their nearest neighbors. "Naturally, families who provide themselves with fully stocked and equipped fallout shelters the fewer shelters we will have to build for general use. present we have no plans to actually build large public shelters. What we want to do is to utilize and improve existing facilities which would make excellent fallout shelters. Col.

Crawford paid high praise to his own staff and the local CD Jorganizations in York County for their dedication to the job of organizing. "If there is any credit due anyone for the high regard in which York County is held by the State Civil Defense Council it should go to these men and women who have worked just as long and hard as I to make the honor possible. "I'm sure, however, that everyone of them feels as I do. There are times when you want to throw up your hands in disgust and quit; the odds against what you are trying to do seem so impossible. But, then something nice happens to erase all the bad moments and it makes everything right again.

"We just keep plugging away at apathy and sooner or later apathy is just a word and not a condition. That's what we have done here in York County, I believe. We've made apathy just an ugly word. "Don't misunderstand. We still have a lot of work to do.

Hard work. But we have had hard work to do before and we did it. We will do it Miss Renoll, Area Bride RED LION Miss Patricia Lorraine Renoll, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul K.
