Frequent penalties and spotty play by the Redskins, who whipped Philadelphia 37-0 in their opener last week, marred the game. Bukich, who connected on 13 of 19 passes for 206 yards, got the Bears rolling in the first quarter with a 14-yard touchdown to.ss to Johnny Morris, who set an NFL pass catching record last fall. A fumbled punt by Redskin rookie Bill Hunter gave the Bears the ball on 28 a few minutes later and Jon Arnett bucked over from the two seven plays later. Other Bear touchdowns came on a 75-yard pass play to rookie Dick Gordon on the first play of the half and a five-yard toss to Joe Marconi in the fourth quarter. Three Redskins drives were stymied, one when Pat Richter fumbled on the Bear two aher a 19-yard pass play, and two more on pass interceptions by Jim Purnell and Richie Petitbon.

Jim Fregosi opened the ninth with a walk. When Vic Power bunted, Kralick threw the ball into right field, Fregosi going to third and Power to second. After an international walk to Lou Clinton filled the bases, Bobby Knoop singled for two runs. Bob Rodgers attempted to sacrifice and Kralick, trying for a force at third, threw wildly again, as two more runs scored.

Bob who came on in the seventh, protected the lead for his seventh victory of the year. The Indians had tied the score 1-1 in the seventh. Leon Wagner and Roclty Colavlto and Max single scored W'ag- ner. Before that flurry by Cleveland, Fred Newman had pro- a 1-0 Angel lead, allowing only one hit and a walk. M. WHAT MAKES A BONEFISH GREAT? The bonefish is called one of the greatest gamefishes of salt water, and I suppose it is. never fished for one, so I confirm or deny its pulling ability. The bonefish has made FlorMa a mint of money through the Thousands of fishermen jcumey to shallow coves and bays to a bonefish. About the only two qualifications the bottom feeding fish has that could put it and keep it in the gamefish class are its ability to make a strong, drag-screaming run and the fact that it is an extremely wary fish and must be approached cautiously.

The accepted method of catching a bonefish is to pole a boat or wa(te across shallow flats, spot the fish, then make a long cast and try to entice one into taking your bait or lure. The fish jump hooked. It just pulls. Then, when you catch It, you either have It mounted or turn it loose. They have too many bones to be considered good eating.

This description sort of reminds me of a carp. A carp jump when hooked. It must makes powerful runs. And carp have too many bones to be considered good eating fish. STALK FISH IN LAGUNA MADRE If you want to stalk a fish in Texas, you can do it down the Laguna Madre.

Try sneaking up on a sow trout or bull red and see how wary these two gamefish can be. A red jump, either, but it is noted for power. But a big trout might show you its yellow-lined mouth once or twice beiore you put it on the stringer. I have a sneaking suspicion that the bonefish got its reputation as such a great gamefish partially through promotion. With the proper kind of promotion, Texas might do the same with the ladyfish, alias the skipjack.

have a lot of these fish in our coastal waters. They strike hard, fight good and jump all over the place. But you eat them after you catch them. Too many bones. An occasional bonefish is caught in Texas waters.

But not in the shallows. I know of two bonefish taken here in the last four years, and both of them were caught in 180 or so feet of water on the snapper banks. One of the two was caught last Wednesday while 12-year- old Alfred Peterson of Minnesota was fishing for snapper aboard the Janice out of Port Aransas. He got a nibble, set the hook and cranked up a bonefisb. The other bonefish, which was caught about three years ago, came from the same area, the submerged rocks about 40 miles offshore.

The fisherman who caught that bonefish reportedly used it as a marlin bait! WEEKEND FISHING OUTLOOK; GOOD Waters are good along the coast in all areas, and fishermen are making some fine catches. Kingfish are still being caught in the Gulf, and trout are being picked up in oitus hristi Bay, the surf off Mustang Island, around the railroad trestle and Indian Point in Nueces Bay, at the land cut and from marker 63 to 65 in Laguna Madre, at Rockport, Aransas Pass, Port Lavaca and Port Isabel, Night fishing for trout seems to be best at Lavaca and from Bob Hall Pier on Padre Island. Pier fishermen also are picking up some pompano, reds and drum, and tarpon fishermen have been getting strikes on both Bob Hall and Horace Caldwell Piers. Ling fishing is reported to be good in the Gulf at Port Isabel. Freshwater fishing also is good.

Black bass fishing on Falcon is hot at the moment, and not just temperature-wise. The blacks are being taken in nearly all areas of the lake on topwater lures and swimming baits. Topwater lures also are paying off in blacks on LBJ. Crappie and catfish action is good there, also. A few white bass are being picked up while trolling on Medina Lake, and crappie are biting at night.

Lake Mathis is producing a few catfish and bass in the brush. SAN MARCOS honored one of its favored sports sons here Thursday Lucious Jackson Day. Jackson, the Little All-American basketball player from Pan American College, who went on to win roolde-of-the-year honors as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in the National Basketball League last year, returned home and was cheered by over 200 friends and admirers. The 6-9 postman was presented a proclamation, declaring August 12, 1965 as Jackson in San Marcos, and a plaque in appreciation of the recognition he has brought to the city. Tom Buckner of the San Marcos Record served as master of ceremonies.

college coach, Sam Williams, Pan American athletic director James Brooks, and Southwest Texas cage coach Vernon McDonald all had brief words of praise for the husky center. look from now on for another Lucious Jackson and never find Brooks said. McDonald bemaoned the fact that Jackson grew up in San Marcos, then went on to lead Pan American over SWT on numerous occasions. Jackson was born in San Marcos and lived there until he was a teenager. Before his junior year he transferred to Bastrop, where he finished high school.

He attended Texas Southern one year, then transferred to rPan American. He played with the United States Olympic team San Marcos year and led it to in the fmals over the Russians. Philadelphia Tops Astros HOUSTON (AP) Chris Short pitched a six- hitter Thursday night for "fiis 14th victory of the seaswi but needed ninth inning help.from Ed Roebuck as the Phillies defeated Houston 7-3. Short, who won his fourth game against the Astros, struck out nine and walked one. Gus Triandos, an ex-Phillie, stroked two of the hits off Short and the spoiled the shutout bid, scoring all runs with two out in the ninth.
