OHT 0201 vehaoM SIGNPOST Monday, January 29, 1990 6 THE To really shake things up, go see the movie "Tremors" The last few years have seen the fiction movie slide from being intense and surprising to disgusting and predictable. Horror movie villains have become indestructible, their victims moronic and plotlines so predictable one is able to describe the whole movie from the By Shawn Peterson Staff writer of The Signpost FILMS (continued from page 5) Street exits stage left. In another scene, he poses as a doctor, and gets in over his head when he is doing surgery and blood begins to spurt all over. When you think you have one personality figured out, he quickly creates a new one. He knows what questions people will ask him before they speak and what buttons to push to seduce them, all the while conning them by what he calls, "caucasian conceit." His humor becomes darker as the film progresses.

He seems to grow evil. In one scene, near the end, he is wearing a mask and chasing his daughter with a knife because he thinks she is turning out like her mother. DON'T PAY RETAIL FOR DIAMOND JEWELRY! BUY YOUR DIAMOND BY APPOINTMENT. 600 REMOUNTS, EARRINGS, PENDANTS, CHAINS IN STOCK ct. ct.

Starring Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, "Tremors" does for sci-fi what "Raiders of the Lost Ark" did for adventure return the audience to the '40's and '50's, when monsters were scary, heroes were humorous, plotlines unpredictable. Bacon and Ward play two handymen in the town of Perfection, population 14.

Tired of hauling garbage and mending fences, the two decide to head to the "big city" of Boise. Nature has other ideas. He is about to accomplish everything he sets out to do, but while he is daydreaming about next becomming a congressman or President of the United States, he is tripped up by minor details like credentials and his wife turning him in. This film would probably be of interest, especially to those who want to beat the system. I would recommend this film to adults, but was glad, in the end, that the "chameleon's" true colors were revealed.

"Dancing for Mr. Directed by Anne Belle and Deborah Dickson, this was the story of George Balanchine's life as seen through the eyes of six of his most talented and famous dancers. Over a forty year period, the master choreographer became the mastermind behind the New York City Ballet until his death in 1982. He was a master who loved his dancers as he did his art. Maria Tallchief, Mary Ellen Moylan, Melissa Hayden, Allegra Kent, Merrill Ashley and Darci Kistler tell of their memories of how "Mr.

molded them into six of the greatest ballerinas of all time. Their interviews were interwoven with beautiful, kinetic and inspiring dance footage of these great dancers. It On the way out of Perfection, they discover a decimated sheep farm, a "treed" old man, a buried car, and the only road out of town blocked by an earthslide. What on earth could be causing these strange occurrences? As our heroes soon find out, it's not "what on but "what under the earth." Perfection is under assault by four giant worm-like creatures that hunt by vibration and attack with long, biting tentacles. Finn Carter portrays a seismology student whose monitors initially detect the creatures.

Michael Gross and Reba McEntire play an affluent survivalist couple with enough weapons to supply a Central American dictator's army. While watching this movie, I felt the way I did watching "Aliens" for the first time. This story makes you feel as if you are fighting the beasties alongside Bacon and Ward. Don't expect any Oscars; "Tremors" isn't "Oscar material" (judging by past snobothons), but it is a very fun movie. Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson BETTER SHE'S COMING! THERE YOU ARE! This beautiful film that took five years to produce should be seen by everyone.

It will be shown on public broadcasting stations March 30 on "Dance in America." Belle said in an interview after the show, "Balanchine grew up in Lenningrad, Russia, but defected for artistic freedom." "The phone rang off the hook," he said. "Students kept calling for a halfhour after we had announced the it was unbelievable. That experience convinced me we needed to stay on the air 24 hours." Even with all the positive changes that the station has made, KWCR isn't without it's share of problems and worries. More equipment needs updating, along with the usual maintenance that electronic hardware needs.

Toyn and Gunn are particularly worried about an aging transmitter that has almost become the in-house joke. "We have a transmitter that is 27 years old," Toyn said. "One big snow storm could bring it all down!" He rolls his eyes and almost laughs. Gunn agrees it's a problem. "We have the staff throwing snowballs to knock the ice off the transmitter," he said, "because 100 watts of power doesn't produce enough heat to melt the ice." Of no laughing matter though, would be possible sponsor money that might have to be returned if the station goes off the air over the 24-hour period because of a transmitter failure.

Many benefits come to the station by way of community underwriting. Old equipment can be replaced, music libraries can be updated and station visibility can be increased via advertisement. "That is still our biggest challenge," Gunn said. "We've raised $5,000 half-way through the convinced we could raise $30,000 with an organized marketing staff." Students in the broadcasting program seem to be the real benefactors of the many changes. With more available air time, students have the opportunity to have increased 'hands-on' experience with radio and production equipment.

Gunn feels this also helps disc-jockeys gain confidence and thus adds a professional sound over the air. The past success and coming year continue to hold satisfaction and excitement for KWCR and Toyn. "I think we have taken a step into legitimacy," he said, "for the studentbody and listeners in the are not just an -again off-again station anymore.".
