THE SIGNPOST 5 At any day, any time, "The Beat" at WSC goes on Monday, January 29, 1990 Ode to a Winter's Night By Kurtis Spackman Staff writor of The Signpost to ruin the mood tonight. But wait, what's that blinding obnoxious light? Streaming from the window of the communications building next to the plaza. There's a DJ with headphones on, his windows open and the music's a blastin'. Darn, now you just feel like dancin'. So much for Save your frozen lips, Save your frozen feet.

Just as well go home, and blame it on "The Beat." A date in the dead of winter. Very late, on a week-day January It's warm even when the cold breeze bites. What to do to make the evening complete? A walk around an icy duck pond, you think? Yes, that would make a romantic finish. The snow's been cleared off the walks, the fog has diminished. Not even the clunking sound of skateboard wheels random surveys, hoping to retrieve input from college listeners, to find ways to improve the station and better address student listening needs.

Faculty adviser Roger Gunn offered insight into some of the changes that KWCR needed to make. "Students have requested more consistent programing," he said. "In the past, there was no continuity at the station. Each year the staff had to deal with the upheaval that is caused by changing advisors. There were people who wouldn't show up for shifts and equipment would be down." Gunn gave an example from a year and a half earlier.

"When I came into Ogden on my first day," he said, "KWCR was off the air. Why was a radio station off the air in the middle of the day?" Listeners can now find a consistent sound when they tune WSC's campus radio station, KWCR, "The Beat," is now on the air around the clock, every day of the year. Since expanding to 24 hours, the radio station has also changed music formats, set new goals for staff and station and now their ratings are sky-rocketing. Arbitron, a national radio and TV rating and statistics guide which the broadcasting industry lives and dies by, currently lists KWCR as the fastest growing radio station in Weber County. According to station manager Gary Toyn, the evolution to a 24-hour station has been a lengthy process.

"After two decades of bad programming, playing heavy metal music and being on-the-air- After Hours in to 88.1 FM. The station now plays what is known in the radio world as Top 40-Dancecrossover air-play, or the same style of music played at dance clubs. The switch has proved to be popular. (See KWCR page 6) off-again, we wanted to make some changes that would make an impact and contribute to the college and community, and not be an ear-sore." Last May KWCR began Sundance Film Festival shows excellent movies I II artist extraordinaire. Street, a black man who barely got through high school, describes himself as a "complex, exotic notorious negro." He had an idea he could fool "all of the people all of the time," and went on to successfully impersonate doctors, lawyers, journalists and other professionals over a number of years.

His exploits eventually land him in jail for nine months, although once he escapes he embarks on new adventures. Street's quick wit and biting sarcasm gets him into outrageous situations. In one scene, where he wants to fool people into thinking he understands French, he watches people speaking French on TV and then tries to snow his fellow students at Yale. He is well on his way to turning his seven words of French into a seven day conversation when a real frenchman appears on the scene and says, (in French) "You can't even speak French."
