He did have six points far his weak two bid, but had to count three jacks to get to that six points. The hand came up early in our match against China. It didn't shut out Conrad Cheng He doubled. Elmer Hsiao, sit ting South, responded three diamonds.

Cheng cue bid three hearts and Bobby Goldman dou bled to show something in his partner's suit. The bidding continued with boih Chinese considering a slam, but finally settling for a five-diamond contract. Hearts were opened and con tinued. Hsiao ruffed the second heart in dummy, cashed the ace and queen of trumps, came to his hand with the king of clubs. drew East's hist two trumps and claimed the balance.

At the o'her teble the Chi nese base-Wist pair put on even more pressure. M. F. Tai opened three hearts. Bob Ham mann doubled.

Pat Huang went to four hearts and it was up to Mike Lawrenc? to do some thing. He knew he was being fixed, but decided to follow the prin ciple of being fixed, but get ting a sure plus score. He dou bled four hearts. The best Tai could do was tn gather in six tricks so Mike and Bob were plus 700 to give us a 7 IMP gain. Looking back at the other ta ble China might well have bid the slam, if Billy had kept quiet.
