HASTINGS OIL. CITY- -Funeral services for Ben Gaston Hastings, 63, of 114 Moran who died Saturday in Oil City Hospital, were held at 1:30 p. m. Sunday in the family residence. Mr.

Hastings was an engineer and licensed surveyor for excavating contractor Louis Kraft. The Rev. Harold Kelley, pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church, officiated. Interment was in Greendale Cemetery at Meadville, with Louis Kraft, Charles Williams, William Hennies, Elmer Pleger, Al Rosin and John Stanonis serving as pallbearers. Pettigrew, a retired machinist, formerly worked at Oil Well Division of U.S. Steel Corporation. Rev. Elroy Sayers, pastor of the Bethel and Plumer United Methodist Charge, officiated. Interment was in the Troy Center Cemetery.

C. K. (Francis) Brown of 216 S. Seventh who has served as head nurse of Medical III at Oil City Hospital for the past five years, retired effective May 1. She became head nurse Feb.

1, 1966, after serving three years on the staff which she joined March 4, 1963. Mrs. Brown graduated 1932 Lankenau Hospital (Training School for Nurses in Philadelphia and pointed out that in joining the nursing staff of the local hospital, this was the first she had worked since 1935. "I had quite a comback to make," she commented. However, after her three years of general duty, she rose to the ranks of head nurse.

A native of Reading, she located in Franklin in December, 1932, and moved to Oil City in 1936 and has been here since. Her husband is manager of Corrin Electric Supply. They have two daughters, Mrs. Frederick P. (Helen) Arnold of Monroeton, who holds a masters degree in education, and Miss Frances Brown, a member of the faculty of the ed ical-surgical department and instructor in advance coronary care at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

She was graduated from Hamot Hospital School of Nursing, Erie, received her B. S. degree in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh and her masters degree in nursing from Case Western Reserve, Cleveland. MILES R. LYNN JR.

Speaker named for Law Day OIL CITY Law Day U.S.A. will be observed Wednesday when Miles R. Lynn district attorney of Venango County, will address a joint luncheon meeting of three local service clubs. The Lions, Rotary and Kiwanis clubs will jointly hold a luncheon at noon in the YMCA. Walter R.

Peterson of the Lions Club is serving as chairman of the event and will introduce the speaker. The committee included John K. Burkhister and Jonathan H. Hutchinson, Lions; Howard A. Starzmann, Rotary; and James K.

Foster, Kiwanis. Law Day U.S.A. is celebrated annually as an educationalpatriotic observance established by Congress and by proclamation of the President. The theme for this year is "Channel Change Through Law and Reason." It emphasized the importance of resolving grievances through lawful means. A joint resolution adopted by the 87th Congress calls on Americans to reaffirm their loyalty to the nation and to rededicate themselves to the ideals of equality and justice under law in their relations with each other.

In his proclamation, President Nixon urges all people to reaffirm their dedication to our form of government and the supremacy of law in our lives. He asked that appropriate observances be held throughout the nation. Locally, Mayor R. H. Anderson issued a proclamation, and he too urged programs for observance of the event.

To mark the occasion, derson called for an increased understanding of and respect for the rule of law. K. Bayer 80, prominent in oil industry son's jubilee The Rev. Lawrence J. Antoun, headmaster of Venango Christian High School and pastor of St. Venantius parish, Rouseville, attends marked the silver anniversary of his ordination yesterday.

Among the hundreds attending the special mass and reception at VCHS were Father Antoun's mother, Mrs. Fred Antoun of Meadville, left and his sister, Sister Lawreace Antoun, S.S.J., president of Villa Maria College. Silver jubilee celebration held for Rev. L. J. Antoun OIL CITY Bishop Alfred M. Watson, head of the Erie Catholic Diocese, was on hand Sunday to praise the Rev.

Lawrence J. Antoun on the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Father Antoun serves as headmaster of Venango Christian High School and pastor of St. Venantius parish, Rouseville, and the mission church at Mageetown. Bishop Watson, in his remarks said Father Antoun "is extraordinary in education and extraordinary in administration, but, first of all, a priest." An estimated 1,000 guests, including at least 50 fellow priests and Monsignori gathered at VCHS for his Silver Jubilee.

Speaking in the school auditorium following the conce'ebrated Mass of Thanksgiving, Bishop Watson said he hoped part of Father Antoun's character and personality would rub off on his students and that some of them will enter the OIL CITY William K. Bayer 85, of 1576 W. Sixth Erie, a director of Quaker State Oil Refining Corp. and prominent oil figure in Western Pennsylvania for many years, died Sunday in St. Vincent's Hospital, Erie.

He was stricken ill Saturday. Mr. Bayer was a past president of the Bayerson Oil Co. in Erie and Enterprise Oil Co. of Buffalo, N.Y., and had been on the board of directors of Quaker State for 49 years.

He was active in the National Petroleum Refiners Association, the American Petroleum Institute and other petroleum industry organizations. Born in Warren December 29, 1885, he was a son of the late Philip J. and Eliza Morck Bayer, and moved to Emlenton with his family in 1895 when his father went there to found the Emlenton Refining Company. He was a past president of St. Barnabas Home-on-the-Lake, a member of the Erie Club, Kahkwa Club, Aviation Club and Erie Mennerchor.

He is survived by his wife, the former Violette (Dixie) Darling: three daughters, Mrs. John (Helen) Twomey of Mrs. La Grange Park, (Betty) Travers and Robert, three (Georgette) William Illig K. of sons. Bayer Jr.

of Oil City, local Quaker State official, Philip J. Bayer of St. Marys, W. and William B. Darling of Oregon City, 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren: two nephews, John and Reed M.

Grunden of Erie, and a niece, Dorothy Grunden of Warren. Friends may call at the Brugger Home for Funerals, W. 38th and Greengarden Erie, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with Rev. E. Dale Click, pastor of the Lutheran Memorial Church, officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Erie.

Errol H. Stewart OIL CITY Errol H. Stewart, 55. of Oil City RD 2, an employe of Pennsylvania United, died at 3:45 p.m. Sunday in Oil City Hospital.

He was born in Rocky June 7, 1915, a son of Thomas and Harriet Harding Stewart. Mr. Stewart was a member of IO0F Lodge 589. He and the former Georgia Henderson were married September 1941. She survives.

Surviving along with his wife, Mrs. Georgia Stewart, are two sons, Errol Harding Stewart Jr. of Oil City and Richard Thomas Stewart of Rouseville; a daughter, Mrs. James (Sandra Ann) Mullen of Salamanca, N.Y.; a brother, Alton H. Stewart of Oil City RD three sisters, Mrs.

Dale Drumm of North Tonawanda, N.Y., Mrs. Rhea Wende of Tucson, and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Reuman of New Hartford, N.Y., and two grandchildren. Friends will be received in the Charles A. Morrison Funeral Home any time after 7 p.m.

Interment will be in Sandy Cemetery near Polk. Mrs. Ella E. Morgan OIL CITY Mrs. Ella E.

Morgan, 89, of Springfield, a former local resident, died Saturday in Springfield. She would have observed her 90th birthday May 22. She was the widow of Richard Morgan. They were both natives of Clarion, but had resided many years in Oil City. The couple moved to Massachusetts in the mid-1920s.

Surviving are a son, James Morgan, and two daughters, Mrs. Frances Dorenbaum and Mrs. Donald Conway, all of Massachusetts. A sister-in-law, Mrs. Andrew Karg, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Beach of 27 Plum St. announce the engagement of their daughter, Linda Kay, to Paul R. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. James R.

Smith of 111 Wabash Ave. Miss Beach, a 1969 graduate of Oil City High School, is employed as an operator for the General Telephone Co. here. Mr. Smith, also a 1969 graduate of Oil City High School, is employed by the Army Store.

The wedding will be an event of the early summer of 1972. Man arrested after incident at laundromat OIL CITY--An Erie man was arrested here early Sunday on charges stemming from an incident at the Econ-0-Wash, 501 E. Second St. Robert S. Spangler, 46, was jailed for malicious mischief to real property and city drunk.

He was picked up at the intersection of East Second and Imperial streets. Police said plate glass measuring 16-by-24 inches was smashed on a dispenser in the laundromat, and some display detergent samples were stolen. Officers said several items taken from the machine were found in Spangler's possession. The suspect also had cut his hand, police reported. Spangler paid $36 fine and cost and was released.

Players, tapes stolen from cars over weekend OIL CITY A series of weekend incidents involving vandalism and thefts from parked cars is being investigated by city police. Stereo tape players were taken from cars owned by Mrs. Jane Winger of 230 Alcorn Ave. and Rick Copely of 510 E. Fourth St.

Police said thieves also took four tapes from the Copley auto, 18 tapes and a carrying case from a car owned by Felix Cozad of 328 Emerald 12 tapes and case from a vehicle owned by Sonny Cotton ot 124 Charlton St. and six tapes from a car owned by Thomas Flinchbaugh of 30 Smithman St. All of the cars were parked near the owners' homes Police ask that anyone having information about the thefts contact police headquarters. Wedding buff BOURNEMOUTH, England (UPI)-Harry Bryan-Brown advertised i in his local paper that he would loan his Rolls Royce free as a bridal car to anyone who would invite him to their wedding. "There must be lots of young couples who can't afford a Rolls for their big day," 73-year-old Harry said.

Mark Seminary after leaving VCHS as guidance director. Present also were Monsignor Homer DeWalt, school superintendent of the Erie Diocese; Monsignor James Powers of Franklin, former pastor of St. Patrick; Monsignor Francis' Theobald of Fryburg; Monsignor James Caldwell, editor of the Lake Shore Visitor. Three other 1971 Jubilarians were concelebrants of the Mass of Thanksgiving, Rev. Thomas Geddes of Smethport, Rev.

Thomas Plunkett of Erie and Rev. George Groucutt of Titusville. Following the mass, the large crowd was entertained at a public reception. Father Antoun greeted each and every guest in the long receiving line. Parishioners at St.

Venantius in Rouseville were in charge of the buffet. Mrs. E. G. Hlawati baked the anniversary cake, which was the center of attraction of the buffet, in a pastry floral motif setting.

Genuine floral pieces enhanced the altar arranged in front of the stage during the Mass. Father Antoun was ordained May 30, 1946, in St. Peter Cathedral in Erie by Archbishop John Mark Gannon. Saturday in her home following a lengthy illness. Her husband, Donald F.

Mohnkern, an Oil City native, is now registrar at Roberts Wesleyan College at North Chili and he has been teaching in Rochester, N.Y., since moving to that area. He is a former teacher at South Side Junior High School in Oil City and also taught at Tionesta. Mrs. Mohnkern, the former Melva Simmons, was a native of Oklahoma. Surviving along with her husband are two children, Scott and Susanne at home.

Friends are being received at Walker Brothers Funeral Home in Spencerport, N.Y. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church in North Chili..
