In April, the Main Stage season will present an evening of "Dance Theatre directed by Rusinko and Rowley.

Music, dance and drama combine for a unique and exciting entertainment experience. Closing the season in June will be a student-produced contemporary comedy-drama, Crimes of the Heart. Weber State Theatre has announced its 1986-87 season, according to Dr. Ronald V. Ladwig, managing director for Weber State Theatre. From late October to early June, Weber State Theatre will offer audiences a broad range of theatrical entertainment with productions in the Val Browning Center on the WSC campus. The season will be divided into two parts, noted Ladwig, who is also chairman of the Department of Theatre Arts at Weber State: the Main Stage season will feature four major productions scheduled for either the Allred Theatre or the Austad Auditorium; the Showcase Season will feature some experimental productions and lesser known plays that may not have as broad an appeal as the main stage shows.

The Showcase Season leads the way with the Oct. 8 performance of Iphigenia in Aulis. This heroic tale of love and sacrifice is part of Euripides' great legacy of classic tragedy, and is co-sponsored by the Department of English at Weber State. It will be performed by a group of touring players from the University of Utah under the direction of former WSC professor, Larry L. West.

Also scheduled for the Showcase Season is An Actor's Showcase in November, featuring some of WSC's best performers in a series of scenes from both modern and classical drama. The Showcase Season will end in March with a production of Neil Simon's The Gingerbread Lady. Made into a movie under the title of Only When I Laugh, this dark comedy contains some of Simon's wittiest dialogue and most poignant characters. The Main Stage Season opens Oct. 23 with A Tomb With a View, a comedy thriller just in time for Halloween.

"The play has enough twists and turns to satisfy the most demanding mystery buff, and at the same time, it has comic elements right out of the Addams Family," according to Dick Davis, marketing director for the School of Arts and Humanities. This play also marks the return to the Weber State Theatre stage of Dr. John M. Elzey, who has been on sabbatical for the past year. Dr.

Elzey will direct A Tomb With a View and The Gingerbread Lady. Iphigenia readied for performance NG OF DIAMOND: IV 0 The story involves Agamemnon's" decision to follow the advice of an oracle and to sacrifice the life of his only daughter, Iphigenia, to the goddess Artemis. The sacrifice must be made in order to insure the safe passage of the Greek fleet across the Aegean sea where the army hopes to conquer Troy and bring back the infamous Helen of Troy, the errant wife of Agamemnon's brother Menelaus. "Rarely, if ever, are events real or fictional clearly tragic or totally comic; for at the core of the darkest tragedy, there is usually a seed of humor; and comedy finds its source in imperfection and sadness," West said. "In the same sense, people or characters are more complex than to be wholly heroic or unflinchingly; villainous.

It is in this light that we present our production of Euripides' final play." Weber State College is part of the Classic Theatre Festival tour of Provo, Ephraim, Logan and Salt Lake City. The festival includes lectures, symposia and a library exhibit featuring the W.S. Merwin and George Dimock, Jr. translation of Iphignia at Aulis. Lectures during the tour will be given by James Svendsen, dramaturg for Iphigenia at Aulis.

Svendsen is an associate professor of classics and an adjunct professor of theater at the University of Utah. He received his Ph.D in classics from the University of Minnesota, where he specialized in Greek and Roman drama and the ancient novel. The annual event is supported by the Utah Performing Arts tour of the Utah Arts Council, the Utah Endowment for (see PERFORMANCE on page 14) Marriage as a sacrifice, a common pre-supposition, would have been reprieve for Iphigenia, the innocent, young heroine in the last play written by Euripides. Iphigenia at Aulis, a tragedy with melodramatic overtones, will open Weber State Theatre's Showcase Season on Oct. 8 in the Austad Auditorium at the Val A.

Browning Center for the Performing Arts. Curtain is at 8 p.m. for the one-performance-only event. A "prequal" to last year's production of Agamemnon, the play is directed by L.L. West, a former instructor for the Department of Theatre Arts at Weber State College.

West, a graduate of Weber State, recently returned to Utah after 15 years of teaching and directing in Minnesota, Oregon, North Carolina and Texas. A director of eclectic tastes, his directing credits include more than 50 plays, ranging from Shakespearean comedy to Shavian satire and the absurdism of Samuel Beckett, with a good portion of Lerner and Lowe and Neil Simon for leaven. "Although traditionally grouped with the tragedies, Iphigenia at Aulis plays against most classical definitions of tragedy," said West. "The plot, mood and characters are as much in the spirit of the 19th century American melodrama as they are in the tradition of the fifth century B.C. Greek tragedy." Euripides' blend of dramatic styles in Iphigenia at Aulis has been considered controversial by many critics and scholars of classic theater.

Many critics have called it unfinished, while actors and directors tend to find the play a challenging "new" work, according to West. 1 The King of Diamonds (lp Over 250 Wedding Sets Highest Quality Best Prices Personal Service If your diamond does not appraise in writing (within 30 days of purchase) for AT LEAST 40 more than your purchase price, your money will be refunded.
