6 Signpost Tuesday, February 18, 1986 Radio station, KWCR, celebrates twenty years of being 'on-the-air' by Emilie Bean News Editor 3 In the future, T.J. Loosly, sports director, said that KWCR hopes to be able to cover some of the local high school games. He added that they may even be covering the state tournament for high school basketball. The station is run by students with a faculty advisor. Currently, Hill is the program director, John Caplan is the news director, Paul Tanner does the PR work involved, and T.J.

Loosly does sports with assistant Kevin Lucas. Also involved in putting the station together are the disc jockeys. Being a DJ at KWCR is on a volunteer basis. If a person wants to try working for the station, heshe needs real interest and tenacity, said Hill. There is a 4-5 hour training program over a three-day period, and then "it depends on how well they catch on when they get on the air," Hill said.

Hill determines a format for the music, and the DJ's play the music within those bounds. For instance, Wednesday is punk night from p.m. During that time, the DJ plays only punk music. Although requests are encouraged (626-6450), if the song is not within the realm of the format, it will probably not be played, said Hill. During the day, KWCR plays the campus top 100 as determined by a subscription service which, in turn, polls radio stations from around the country.

Weber receives some 30-50 albums per month which showcase new groups. The station is played in the union building (see KWCR on page 7) In May of 1966, a new dimension of learning was added to Weber State College. The addition a progressive rock radio station. Under the direction of communication professor Dr. Benjamin Noid and with $5,000, WSC began 20 years of KWCR radio.

The station has 100 watts of power reaching the greater Ogden area. The station was designed to give students an opportunity to learn to be disc jockeys, to write for the broadcast medium, and to have fun, said Brian Hill, program and music director. "College radio is to make mistakes and get experience," he said. The station is on the air from 8 a.m. until midnight.

Currently, KWCR plays progressive rock and roll or college top 100. This constitutes music not typically heard on top-forty or hard rock stations. Usually, the songs played are from hit records but are not the ones that made the top-forty. According to Hill, this gives students a different-choice and an opportunity to listen to something unique. In addition to the music, KWCR sports works actively to cover WSC events.

The radio station covers men's and women's home basketball games with a play-by-play announcer and a color analyst, one who understands the strategies and theorums of the game. Also, they cover minor, lesser known sports on campus.
