Reds continue to gain on slumping Dodgers ers By United Press International Don't kiss off the Cincinnati Reds just yet. There may be a pennant race in the National League West after all. "I think the team is really starting to come together again," said Nick Esasky, one of a number of offensive stars Thursday night in the Reds' 19-hit, 15-5 pounding of the Atlanta Braves. The victory, combined with Houston's triumph over the firstplace Dodgers, left the Reds games behind Los Angeles. And the two teams play each other three more times.

"We still have a lot of games left," said Esasky, whose three-run homer in the seventh inning delivered the game-winning run. "If we keep doing what we're doing now, we've got a chance of winning it." What the Reds are doing right now is winning five in a row and eight of their last 10. What the Dodgers are doing right now is losing four of their last five. Suddenly the Los Angeles lead isn't looking so safe. Fouts, Joiner still thanking Bengals Sports Briefs By United Press International Every time Dan Fouts calls a play for Charlie Joiner, he must chuckle to himself and think of the Cincinnati Bengals. That is the team, Fouts says, that was silly enough to let Joiner go to the Chargers in 1976. Fouts still laughs about it to this day. "Have I thanked the Cincinnati Bengals yet this season for sending us Charlie Joiner," Fouts said. Joiner, the 17-year-old veteran, has paid more than his share of dividends for San Diego since he was acquired for defensive lineman Coy Bacon.

He and Fouts will get to rub dirt in the Bengals' faces once again Sunday when the Chargers travel to Cincinnati for their third game of the season. Joiner will set an NFL record Sunday by playing in his 211th game, the most ever by a receiver. The old mark was set Jackie Smith. Joiner is just 90 yards away from becoming only the second NFL receiver to record 11,000 reception yards. Scoreboard Baseball NL standings By United 1 Press International East Pet.
