44 Thursday. June 21, 1979 THE DAILY OKLAHOMAN 5-Month Probe Ends in 8 Arrests, $500,000 Seizure By Mark D. Cireen Federal agents concluded five months of undercover investigation into "numerous inroads by organized crime" into state gambling and narcotics circles with eight arrests and recovery of drugs and property worth more than $500,000, officials said Wednesday. Undercover FBI agents, with assistance from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control, purchased pounds of cocaine worth about $480,000 during the probe, which began in January. The eight suspects were jailed after a final drug buy Tuesday night, and with search warrants raided two residences in Oklahoma City and The Village, as well as numerous safety deposit boxes and automobiles, officials said.

Jailed were: George Herbert Heidelberger, 33, of 4516 Memory Lane; Curtis Alan Cory, 28, and his wife, Patricia. 25, both of 2225 Downing; La Raine A. Kelly, 28, of 1129 Woodlawn; Larry Raymond McBride, 28, of 668 NW 35 and Linda Payne, 24, Tulsa. Also jailed were Darla Jane Sheldon, 27, and Gary Dale Posey, both of Oklahoma City. A ninth unidentified suspect is still sought bv authorities.

All were booked into the Oklahoma County jail after being charged in U.S. District Court with assorted counts including distribution of narcotics and interstate transportation aiding racketeering-narcotics, officials said. The suspects appeared Wednesday morning before U.S. Magistrate Ron Howland, who set bonds ranging from $100,000 to $800,000. FBI spokesman John Warren said the eight were linked through the investigation to organized crime figures in Las Vegas, Kansas City, and New Orleans.

"They had contacted people who are in ganized crime," Warren said. The cities are "where the traffic was coming from," he said. Warren would not be more specific about possible underworld connections, but said during the probe drugs were purchased at least once by agents from each suspect. "Undercover agents made contacts with the dealers using intelligence gained in past investigations," Warren said. "The investigation is continuing.

We feel there will be at least one additional arrest and more search warrants served." Cocaine confiscated in the investigation is of "very good about 80 percent pure, officials said. Pure cocaine sells for about $3,000 an ounce on the street. Warren said the substance was not "cut" for distribution. The sizeable amount indicated a significant distribution potential, he said. Besides cocaine, authorities in their searches of the Memory Lane and Downing residences recovered amounts of other drugs, drug paraphernalia, weapons and $50,000 in cash, he said.

Preliminary hearings for the suspects were set for June 28 and 29 before Howland. Bond review hearings are scheduled today on some of the eight persons charged. Judge Asks Sides to Find Compromise District Judge Alma Wilson took under advisement the case of Red River Construction Co. which is suing the city because of an ordinance that shut down sand hauling operations. Wilson will make the ruling on a permanent injuction against the city within 15 days but indicated the two parties should get together and work out a compromise.

Joe Murphy, owner of the Red River Construction, claims the city ordinance banning trucks from a portion of 24th Avenue Southwest is unlawful because it was aimed directly at shutting down his business. A temporary tion prohibiting the enforcement of the ordinance is currently in effect. HUD to Sell Complex A 184-unit apartment complex at 2800 Kelley in Oklahoma City will be put up for sale by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which repossessed the property in February 1978. HUD spokesman Phil Browning said Wednesday the federal government took over the property when the owners.

Prince Hall Village defaulted on the loan. "We renovated the property, which was in very bad condition," Browning said. Original officers of the corpora- tion were state Sen. E. Melvin Porter, Amos T.

Hall, W.E. McMurray, L.G. Ashley and H.E. Duncan. However, HUD officials said they did not know if the original officers still were associated with the properties when the corporation faulted on its mortgage payments.

The purchase plan notes the complex can be sold for a minimum price of $1.6 million. The complex currently has 98 percent occupancy, with most of the tenants receiving Section 8 rental assistance, Browning said. The state has produced a report showing that Nevada's liberal laws and 24-hour wedding industry resulted in 115,617 marriage licenses being issued in 1978 and 11,213 divorces and annulments, about a 10-to-l ratio, compared to the national average. Murder Charge Filed A 26-year-old man described by police as a transient was charged Wednesday in Oklahoma County District Court with first- degree murder in the June 14 beating death of Max Bear Cochran.

Lawmen said a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Charles E. Hackendahl, a native of Omaha, whom police believe has left Oklahoma City. He is accused of using a three-foot section of iron pipe to bludgeon Cochran, who was killed shortly before midnight in the 400 block of California. A witness to the killing said Hackendahl had uttered an urge to kill someone while he was drinking beer with the victim and the witness in a downtown tavern. The state alleges Hackendahl and the 42- year-old Cochran got into an argument about the statement before the attack.

Oklahoma City police detective Ron bers said investigators discovered Hackendahl appeared at a blood plasma donor center the day after the killing, and he apparently worked as a temporary helper on a crew laying a sewer pipe. 10,000 Offered TULSA. (AP) A $10,000 reward was offered by a convenience store company Wednesday for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever shot and killed a store clerk in southwest Tulsa early Monday. The U-Tote-M Corporation is offering the money for information before July 30 on the killing of Christopher Hardesty, 26. A witness who reported the robbery in progress told police she saw four men in a 1962 red and white Chevrolet leave the scene of the shooting.

Hardesty was shot once in the stomach with a rifle and died later in a Tulsa hospital, police said.
