ABC-TV was heavily criticized for carrying the ill-fated U.S. Boxing Championships, which featured some fighters with alleged falsified records. Network officials recently explained the matter to a Congressional committee, and Trainer said he understands the network's delicate position. "But I can't see why they're making a big deal out of it," said Trainer. "I just hope this isn't blown out of proportion." "He's the only clean shooter in boxing and here he is being strangled by association," said Leonard's publicist, Charlie Brotman.

Brotman's releases listed Diaz' lifetime record as 17-6-3, with his last fight June 17, 1977, a 10-round decision over Guillermo Armengo at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Ring Magazine listed the record as 13-5-3, with the last fight May 10, 1976, in London. The discrepancy prompted ABC-TV to check. CARLOAD Tues. Thurs.

JCPenney Monday thru Friday 10 am to 9 pm Saturday 9:30 am to 9 pm Sunday 10 am to 5 pm Matchup Doesn't Mean Much OAKLAND (UPI) For the first time in a long time, the Kansas City Chiefs are in town this weekend to play the archrival Oakland Raiders and the game doesn't mean much except to veteran linebackers Jim Lynch and Willie Lanier. The Raiders locked up a spot in the AFC playoffs last week by beating the Minnesota Vikings, so when they host the Chiefs here Sunday it will be to finish up the regular season and start getting ready for post-season play. For the Chiefs, Sunday's game probably can't come quick enough. It's been a 2-11 season marred by the firing of popular head coach Paul Wiggin and the possibility of still a new man next season even though Tom Bettis has the job at the moment. Lynch and Lanier, though, should have mixed feelings by the time they take the field at 1 p.m.

Sunday. They have battled the Raiders over a lot of seasons when the AFC West title seemingly always was decided by the two games played between Kansas City and Oakland. Both Lanier and Lynch were second round draft choices for the Chiefs in 1967, Willie coming out of Morgan State and Jim out of Notre Dame. Both have been selected to the Pro Bowl on numerous occasions and over the years have been regarded among the best at their position. Playing this year with a young defense has been frustrating to say the least.

Last Sunday, for instance, the Chiefs bowed to the second-year Seattle Seahawks, 34-31, and when you are as proud as Lanier and Lynch, that had to be a galling experience. However, both announced their plans to retire well before the Seattle loss. Ed Podolak, another veteran Chief who has had his share of Pheasant Kill Down SACRAMENTO The pheasant kill on state and federal areas managed by the Department of Fish and Game this season totaled 2,489 birds, down 31 percent from that for the 1976 season, according to a preliminary report from the DFG. The decrease in the kill was attributed to poor production resulting from the two-year drought and a 33 per cent drop in hunter use of the areas. On the 10 areas managed for pheasant hunting, 18,681 permits were issued to sportsmen to hunt on 36,400 acres on regular dates and an additional 4.000 acres on special dates.

Gray Lodge Wildlife Area led all areas in the number of birds taken with 1,097 and was second to Sutter National Wildlife Refuge in hunter success rate with an average bag of .25 birds per hunter. Weather conditions were generally good throughout most of the season, although there was a rainstorm Nov. 21, which was followed by dense morning and evening fog throughout parts of the Central Valley for the balance of the season. Cover conditions were poor throughout most of the Central Valley. An early harvest resulted in the burning and plowing of a majority of the rice stubble before the season opened.

10th Ave. A8W Hanford 584-7579 success over the years banging heads against the Raiders, is through for the season. Making a comeback of sorts this season, the 10-year running back, all-time rushing leader in Kansas City history, separated his shoulder last week and will not play against Oakland. Mike Livingston, the club's nominal No. 1 quarterback, won't start, either, but for a different reason.

His play has not been all that impressive of late and Bettis wants to see more of Tony Adams, now completing his fourth season. Adams scrambles better than Livingston and Bettis thinks that kind of a quarterback can have more success against Oakland's 3-4 defense. The Raiders have some hurt players, too. Linebacker Floyd Rice is out with a knee injury and Jeff Barnes will start in his place. Tackle John Vella, cornerback Skip Thomas and kick return man Neal Colzie also have knee injuries but will see some action, and wide receiver Mike Siani is questionable with a foot injury.

McMillan Will Return VISALIA Roy McMillan will be back for another year as field manager of the Visalia Oaks. The announcement was made today by George Brophy, vice-president of the Minnesota Twins. The 1978 season will be the second for the Twins as the Oak's parent club. McMillan piloted the Oaks to a third place finish in the second half of the California League season and fourth place in the composite standings. The Oaks had a 39- 31 record in the second half after a disastrous 26-44 first half mark.
